Alto IRA: Platform Profile

Alto IRA is a self-directed IRA platform designed primarily for investors who want retirement-account access to private assets.

Typical uses include:

  • private equity
  • venture capital
  • private credit
  • private funds
  • real estate
  • startups
  • pre-IPO securities
  • renewable energy
  • other private investments

The major 2026 change is that Alto's former CryptoIRA platform is no longer an Alto consumer product.

The business was sold to Public, and former Alto customers migrated to Public in April 2026.

Alto Trust remains the custodian for Public's Crypto IRA.

That continuing custody role should not be mistaken for Alto continuing to operate CryptoIRA as its own platform.

Entity structure

Three Alto entities have different roles.

Alto Solutions

Alto Solutions, Inc. d/b/a AltoIRA provides platform and administrative services.

It is not itself:

  • broker-dealer
  • investment adviser
  • bank
  • crypto exchange

Alto Trust

Alto Trust Co. acts as passive, non-discretionary IRA custodian.

The investor directs investment decisions.

Alto Securities

Alto Securities, LLC, CRD 318536, SEC 8-70863, is a FINRA member and SIPC member.

Alto Securities operates the curated Marketplace.

Alto Securities' SIPC membership does not apply to every private asset held in an Alto IRA.

IRA types

Current Alto IRA supports Traditional, Roth and SEP IRAs.

Funding can include eligible:

  • contributions
  • IRA transfers
  • retirement-plan rollovers

Current pricing

Alto's account fee is based on Total Invested Capital and billed quarterly.

  • $0 invested capital: $0 per quarter
  • $0.01 to $29,999.99: $37.50 per quarter
  • $30,000 and above: $100 per quarter

Annualized:

  • $37.50 × 4 = $150
  • $100 × 4 = $400

Pricing threshold analysis

The $30,000 threshold creates a sharp change.

Invested capitalAnnual account feeEffective percentage
$10,000$1501.50%
$20,000$1500.75%
$29,999$150~0.50%
$30,000$4001.33%
$50,000$4000.80%
$100,000$4000.40%

These percentages compare account fees with invested capital.

They are not investment expense ratios.

The jump immediately above $30,000 is economically meaningful.

Transaction/service fees

Current fee structure includes:

  • Marketplace processing fee: $0
  • Integrated-partner initial processing fee: $10
  • Private-deal processing fee: $75

Special-service fees such as outgoing wire, check, conversion, closure and asset-transfer fees are not established in the current canonical source set.

Issuer and offering expenses remain separate.

Alto Marketplace

Alto Marketplace is offered through Alto Securities.

Current Marketplace opportunities can include:

  • private equity
  • private credit
  • real estate
  • renewable energy
  • venture capital
  • collectibles
  • other private investments

Every current Marketplace offering is limited to accredited investors.

This does not mean every possible investment an Alto IRA can custody requires accreditation.

Bring-your-own deals follow the issuer's own eligibility rules.

Bring a deal

Alto can also provide custody/administration for certain investments the investor sources independently.

Potential examples include:

  • startups
  • private funds
  • private companies
  • real estate
  • private notes
  • other permitted private securities

Alto's willingness to custody an asset is not an endorsement of investment quality.

The investor remains responsible for:

  • investment selection
  • economics
  • issuer due diligence
  • prohibited transactions
  • valuation
  • liquidity

Pre-IPO/private shares

Alto Securities can offer private/pre-IPO opportunities through the Marketplace.

These are not publicly tradable shares.

Private securities may:

  • be restricted
  • lack a secondary market
  • have uncertain valuations
  • require long holding periods
  • never complete an IPO
  • lose all value

Minimums are offering-specific and can be substantial.

CryptoIRA moved to Public

CryptoIRA was historically an Alto product. It was sold to Public, announced in November 2025, with the migration window opening April 24, 2026 and migration completed April 27, 2026. It is no longer a current Alto consumer platform product.

Former Alto CryptoIRA accounts migrated to Public.

At Public:

  • Public provides the customer experience
  • Alto Trust remains IRA custodian
  • Zerohash provides underlying crypto custody/trading infrastructure

Cash vs investment protection

Alto retirement assets can include private securities with no FDIC protection.

Any eligible custodial bank cash protection applies only under the applicable bank/pass-through deposit structure.

It does not insure:

  • private equity
  • venture investments
  • private credit
  • real estate
  • private funds
  • crypto
  • investment performance

SIPC membership of Alto Securities does not protect against investment losses.

Prohibited transactions

Self-directed IRAs require more investor responsibility than conventional brokerage IRAs.

Risks include prohibited transactions involving:

  • IRA owner
  • spouse
  • lineal family members
  • disqualified persons
  • personal use
  • self-dealing
  • prohibited extensions of credit
  • personal benefit

A prohibited transaction can create serious tax consequences.

Alto does not monitor every investment for the investor's complete tax compliance.

Assessment

Alto is most useful when the problem is:

"I want retirement funds invested in a private asset that an ordinary brokerage IRA will not custody."

The platform provides:

  • SDIRA custody
  • administration
  • private-market transaction infrastructure
  • an accredited-investor Marketplace

Its costs require context.

The $30,000 invested-capital threshold increases the annual account fee from $150 to $400, creating a meaningful discontinuity.

The flexibility of private assets also introduces:

  • prohibited-transaction risk
  • illiquidity
  • uncertain valuation
  • issuer risk
  • tax complexity

And in 2026, the crypto trading interface belongs to Public, not Alto.
