Robinhood: Platform Profile
We may earn a commission if you open an account through links on this page. Our editorial analysis is independent and is never influenced by commercial partnerships. Full disclosure.
Robinhood is no longer just the simple mobile stock-trading app that made commission-free brokerage mainstream.
The current platform spans commission-free stocks and stock options, fractional shares, Robinhood Legend, futures, direct crypto, prediction markets, IRAs, managed investing through Robinhood Strategies, stock lending, 24-hour stock trading and an expanding set of Gold and banking features.
That breadth changes how Robinhood should be evaluated.
Its strongest argument is still accessibility: many complicated financial products are easier to reach than they are at traditional brokerages.
Its biggest weakness is that the simplicity of the interface can hide how different those products actually are.
A stock, futures contract, crypto asset, event contract, swept bank deposit and managed portfolio can all appear under the Robinhood brand while being provided through different legal entities and carrying different protections.

Robinhood's product lineup has changed more than its reputation
Robinhood is still associated with beginner investing.
That description is increasingly incomplete.
The platform now supports:
* stocks * ETFs * fractional shares * ADRs * options * index options * futures * crypto futures * direct cryptocurrency * event contracts * self-directed IRAs * professionally managed portfolios
The breadth is approaching that of much older brokerages, but the product emphasis remains different.
Robinhood still does not offer the conventional mutual-fund, individual-bond, Treasury and brokered-CD depth found at Fidelity or Schwab.
Its expansion has instead concentrated on trading products, crypto and adjacent financial services.
Stocks and ETFs remain simple
Eligible self-directed U.S. stock and ETF trades carry a $0 commission.
Robinhood also supports eligible fractional shares from $1.
That combination works particularly well for smaller accounts because a customer can invest fixed dollar amounts without needing enough cash for a whole share.
Fractional shares have one operational limitation worth knowing:
they cannot currently be transferred in kind to another brokerage.
A full outgoing transfer can therefore cause fractional positions to be sold rather than moved.
Robinhood still earns money from stock and options order routing
Commission-free does not mean revenue-free.
Robinhood Financial generally routes stock, ETF and options orders to market makers.
Those market makers pay Robinhood rebates for order flow.
Robinhood states that its routing system evaluates execution factors and that participating market makers pay the same rebate rate.
That reduces one potential incentive to favor one market maker over another.
It does not eliminate payment for order flow itself.
Investors comparing Robinhood with a broker using a different execution model should evaluate:
* commission * execution price * price improvement * routing incentives * trading frequency
rather than treating the visible commission as the entire transaction economics.
Stock and ETF options remain unusually inexpensive
Robinhood charges:
* $0 base commission * $0 per-contract fee
for standard stock and ETF options.
There is also no standard exercise or assignment fee.
That pricing is materially different from brokers charging $0.65 per contract.
A 20-contract equity-options trade that would carry $13 in contract fees at a $0.65 broker has no Robinhood contract commission.
Exchange and regulatory charges can still apply.
Price is not the only distinction.
Robinhood now supports substantially more sophisticated options tools than its early product did.
Index options use different pricing
Robinhood now offers index options including major products such as SPX, VIX, XSP, RUT and NDX.
Unlike its stock and ETF options, index options carry a Robinhood contract fee.
The current standard rate is:
$0.50 per contract.
Robinhood Gold customers currently pay:
$0.35 per contract.
Exchange fees can be additional.
Some index products also support extended overnight trading.
This is a good example of why saying:
"Robinhood options are free"
is too broad.
Standard equity and ETF options have no Robinhood contract charge.
Index options do.
Legend is the biggest change to Robinhood's trading identity
Robinhood Legend is a free advanced browser-based trading platform.
It adds:
* customizable layouts * advanced charts * technical indicators * drawing tools * scanners * options chains * multi-leg analysis * futures charts * futures trading * crypto trading * position management * chart-based order entry
This is not the original Robinhood experience with a few extra indicators.
Legend moves Robinhood into direct competition with advanced retail interfaces from Schwab, E*TRADE, TradeStation and Webull.
It remains easier to approach than many institutional-style platforms.
That can be an advantage or limitation depending on the trader.
Legend's options tools are much more serious than the old review implies
Options contracts can be charted directly.
The platform includes Greeks such as:
* Delta * Gamma * Theta * Vega
The Simulated Returns tool allows a trader to model estimated profit and loss as:
* the underlying price moves * time passes * implied volatility changes
Multi-leg positions can also be analyzed and adjusted.
These are the kinds of tools that matter once options trading moves beyond buying an occasional call.
They do not turn a risky derivatives trade into a predictable one.
Models depend on assumptions.
Robinhood's 24 Hour Market extends equity trading through most of the week
Robinhood currently allows eligible stocks and ETFs to trade from:
Sunday at 8 PM ET
through:
Friday at 8 PM ET.
The overnight session uses select securities rather than the entire Robinhood stock universe.
Overnight trading can be convenient after:
* overseas market moves * earnings releases * geopolitical events * economic announcements
But overnight liquidity can be materially worse.
Spreads may widen and fewer buyers or sellers may be present.
Access to a market is not the same as daytime execution quality.
Futures are now a real Robinhood product
The old ROIStreet review contained no substantive futures discussion despite categorizing Robinhood as a futures platform.
That is no longer defensible.
Robinhood now offers futures through:
Robinhood Derivatives, LLC.
Available exposure includes products tied to:
* equity indexes * energy * currencies * cryptocurrency * metals * commodities
Micro contracts are supported.
Customers can trade from:
* the Robinhood app * web classic * Robinhood Legend
Robinhood has also built a futures ladder for faster order entry and market monitoring.
Futures pricing is simple at the Robinhood level but not all-in
Robinhood currently charges:
* $0.75 per contract for non-Gold customers * $0.50 per contract for Gold subscribers
The NFA fee is currently:
$0.02 per contract.
Exchange fees vary substantially by product and currently range roughly from:
$0.20 to $7.50
per contract.
That means the Robinhood commission is only one component of the cost.
A $0.50 Gold commission does not mean the trade costs $0.50 all-in.
Robinhood does not currently support options on futures
This distinction should be explicit.
Robinhood's legal disclosures discuss futures and options on futures because of the regulatory entity's permissions and disclosures.
The current Robinhood customer product does not support trading options on futures.
That makes the futures offering less broad than Interactive Brokers, TradeStation or tastytrade for traders who specifically need futures options.
Crypto futures now trade essentially around the clock
Most Robinhood futures trade approximately 23 hours per day, five days per week.
Robinhood states that its eligible crypto futures currently trade 24/7, subject to short maintenance periods.
A crypto futures position is still a regulated derivatives position.
It is not the same as owning Bitcoin or another crypto asset through Robinhood Crypto.
Robinhood remains one of the most integrated crypto brokerages
Direct cryptocurrency is offered through:
Robinhood Crypto, LLC.
The asset lineup has expanded materially and now includes many major cryptocurrencies beyond the original Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin set.
Examples include:
* Bitcoin * Ethereum * Solana * XRP * Dogecoin * Litecoin * Cardano * Avalanche * Chainlink * Arbitrum * Aave * Uniswap
The exact list changes often enough that an evergreen review should point readers to Robinhood's current live asset list rather than publishing a fixed token count.
Robinhood Crypto no longer has one simple pricing model
This is one of the most important changes.
Robinhood now uses two routing approaches.
Market-maker routing
This remains the default in portions of the standard app and web classic.
Robinhood does not charge a separately stated transaction fee.
Instead, compensation is embedded in the spread.
As of June 15, 2026, Robinhood states that it receives:
$0.95 for every $100
of crypto notional executed through market-maker routing.
That is 0.95% of notional volume.
Calling this model "free crypto trading" would therefore be misleading.
There is no separately stated commission, but there is an economic spread structure.
Exchange routing
Eligible crypto can instead use partner exchanges.
These trades use volume-based fee tiers currently ranging from:
0.00% to 0.95%.
Maker/taker pricing is also being introduced.
Robinhood states that it does not receive the partner-exchange rebate on these routed trades.
The cheapest routing method therefore depends on:
* asset * trade size * volume tier * bid/ask spread * platform used * execution quality
Legend changes crypto execution too
Robinhood Legend uses exchange routing rather than the traditional market-maker routing model.
Web classic currently works the other way and uses market-maker routing.
The mobile app can support either model for eligible assets.
That means two Robinhood customers trading the same cryptocurrency can face different fee structures depending on how the order is routed.
Crypto transfers are supported
Eligible customers can transfer supported cryptocurrency:
* into Robinhood * out to external wallets or platforms
Network fees can apply to withdrawals.
Crypto transferred through blockchain networks is operationally different from stocks transferred through ACATS.
Robinhood also supports recurring crypto purchases.
Staking adds another crypto use case
Robinhood supports crypto staking for eligible assets and users.
The current total fee equals:
25% of the staking APY earned.
That total includes the staking partner's charge plus Robinhood Crypto's fee.
The third-party staking-partner component is currently capped at no more than 2.75% under Robinhood's described structure.
The important number is the investor's net staking result after fees.
A headline protocol APY is not the same as what ultimately reaches the account.
Crypto has no SIPC or FDIC protection
Robinhood Crypto LLC is not a FINRA or SIPC member.
Cryptocurrency held through Robinhood Crypto is not:
* SIPC protected * FDIC insured
That remains true even though Robinhood Financial is a SIPC-member brokerage.
The legal entity matters more than the logo displayed in the app.
Prediction markets are now a major Robinhood category
Robinhood's event-contract business has expanded far beyond a small experimental feature.
Eligible customers can trade binary event contracts involving categories such as:
* sports * politics * weather * commodities * entertainment
A contract has a Yes and No side.
Standard prices range from:
$0.01 to $0.99.
A winning standard contract settles at:
$1.
A losing one settles at:
$0.
The market price can be interpreted as an implied probability, but it is still a tradeable market price—not an objective forecast.
Event-contract pricing changed in 2026
Robinhood moved away from a simple flat commission on June 1, 2026.
Its current fee formula is probability-weighted.
The formula uses a constant of:
* 10% for standard customers * 5% for Gold subscribers
applied to contract probability and contract quantity.
Robinhood caps its commission at:
$0.01 per contract.
Partner exchanges can charge an additional fee of up to:
$0.01 per contract.
This means an old article quoting one flat event-contract fee would now be wrong.
Robinhood is not the prediction exchange
Event-contract customer access is provided through:
Robinhood Derivatives, LLC
using partnered exchanges including:
* KalshiEX LLC * ForecastEx LLC * Rothera Exchange and Clearing LLC
Robinhood Derivatives is a registered futures commission merchant.
The exchange defines and lists the contract.
Robinhood provides customer access.
That distinction matters for:
* contract rules * settlement * trading restrictions * fees
Gold now changes more than market data
Robinhood Gold currently costs:
* $5 per month * or $50 annually
Current benefits include:
* 3.35% APY on eligible cash under the High-Yield Cash Program * first $1,000 of eligible margin borrowing interest-free * larger Instant Deposits * 3% match on eligible annual self-directed IRA contributions * reduced index-options fees * reduced futures commissions * management-fee cap benefits for Robinhood Strategies
Gold therefore affects several separate products.
The economics depend on which benefits the customer actually uses.
Someone with no idle cash, IRA contribution, margin balance, futures activity or managed account may receive far less value from Gold than someone using several of those features.
Margin rates are competitive but variable
Robinhood currently uses tiered margin pricing.
As of the fact-check date:
* up to $50,000: 5.00% * $50,000–$100,000: 4.80% * $100,000–$1 million: 4.50% * $1 million–$10 million: 4.25% * $10 million–$50 million: 4.20% * above $50 million: 3.95%
Gold includes the first $1,000 of eligible margin borrowing without additional interest.
These rates are tied to the Federal Funds Target Rate framework and can change.
They should never appear in an evergreen review without a visible fact-check date.
Robinhood's IRA match remains unusual
Robinhood supports:
* Traditional IRAs * Roth IRAs
in both self-directed and managed forms.
For self-directed accounts, the current standard annual-contribution match is:
1%.
Gold members receive:
3%.
IRA transfers and old 401(k) rollovers currently receive a:
1%
match regardless of Gold status under the standard ongoing terms.
Gold customers must remain Gold members for at least one year after receiving their first Gold match to keep the full Gold-enhanced portion.
Assets that earned the contribution match generally need to remain in the IRA for at least five years to avoid a potential removal fee.
The IRA match does not apply to managed Robinhood Strategies contributions
This distinction matters.
Robinhood Strategies managed IRAs do not currently receive the contribution match.
A customer choosing between:
* self-directed IRA * managed IRA
is therefore making more than an investment-management decision.
The match economics differ as well.
Robinhood Strategies changes the platform's identity again
Robinhood Strategies is a managed-investing service operated through:
Robinhood Asset Management, LLC.
The minimum is:
$50.
The annual management fee is:
0.25%.
For Gold subscribers, the management fee applies only to the first:
$100,000
of assets in each managed account.
Accounts below $500 are invested in ETF portfolios.
Accounts at $500 or more can contain a combination of:
* ETFs * individual stocks
depending on the managed strategy.
This justifies categorizing Robinhood as a robo-advisor/managed-investing platform in addition to a self-directed broker.
The 0.25% fee should be evaluated against what is being managed
A $10,000 account at 0.25% costs approximately:
$25 per year
before considering underlying fund expenses or other costs.
A $100,000 account costs:
$250 annually.
A Gold subscriber with more than $100,000 in one managed account does not pay the Robinhood Strategies management fee on assets above that threshold under the current structure.
That makes the effective percentage decline as a Gold member's account grows beyond $100,000.
Robinhood's cash structure is no longer simple either
Gold customers can currently earn:
3.35% APY
on eligible cash through the High-Yield Cash Program as of February 11, 2026.
Eligible cash can exist in different structures, including:
* bank sweep * brokerage-held cash * options collateral cash
That distinction determines investor protection.
Swept cash can receive FDIC protection
Cash moved into participating program banks can qualify for FDIC pass-through deposit insurance subject to:
* applicable limits * ownership category * balances at the same participating bank * program requirements
Robinhood Financial itself is not a bank.
Brokerage-held cash is different
Eligible cash retained as brokerage cash is not transformed into an FDIC-insured bank deposit.
It remains subject to the securities brokerage structure.
The fact that both balances appear as cash inside Robinhood does not make their legal treatment identical.
Robinhood Banking is a separate product
Robinhood has also launched Robinhood Banking.
The service is initially being rolled out by invitation.
Checking and savings accounts are provided through:
Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC.
Customers currently need an annual Robinhood Gold subscription to access the banking product.
Robinhood Banking is therefore another example of why the brand name alone cannot determine protection.
A Robinhood brokerage account is not a Coastal Community Bank deposit account.
Stock Lending can produce income, but Robinhood keeps most of the lending economics
Eligible customers can enroll fully paid whole shares in Robinhood's Stock Lending program.
If Robinhood borrows the shares, the customer currently receives:
up to 15%
of the gross revenue Robinhood generates from lending them.
That means Robinhood retains the majority of gross stock-lending revenue.
Customers should evaluate:
* likely lending demand * payment received * voting-right implications * dividend treatment * counterparty structure
rather than treating participation as free yield.
Moving an account away costs $100
Robinhood currently charges:
$100
for either a full or partial outgoing ACATS transfer.
That is materially higher than Fidelity's current $0 transfer fee and higher than Schwab's current $50 full-transfer fee.
Fractional shares cannot transfer in kind.
Crypto also does not transfer through ACATS.
That makes the cost of leaving Robinhood more relevant for customers consolidating a large account elsewhere.
Robinhood uses several different legal entities
A modern Robinhood review needs to separate them.
Stocks and options
Provided through:
Robinhood Financial LLC
FINRA CRD:
165998
Robinhood Financial is a FINRA and SIPC member.
Clearing
Provided by:
Robinhood Securities, LLC
which is also a SIPC-member broker-dealer.
Crypto
Provided through:
Robinhood Crypto, LLC
NMLS:
1702840
Crypto is not SIPC or FDIC protected.
Futures and prediction markets
Provided through:
Robinhood Derivatives, LLC
NFA ID:
0424278
Robinhood Derivatives is registered with the CFTC as a futures commission merchant and is an NFA member.
Its accounts are not SIPC protected or FDIC insured.
Managed investing
Provided through:
Robinhood Asset Management, LLC
under the Robinhood Strategies brand.
It is an SEC-registered investment adviser.
Banking
Robinhood Banking deposit accounts are currently provided through:
Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC.
The legal differences are not technical trivia.
They determine the regulatory and protection framework for the customer's assets.
SIPC protection is not market-loss insurance
Eligible securities held through Robinhood's SIPC-member broker-dealers fall within the applicable SIPC customer-protection framework.
SIPC does not reimburse a customer because:
* a stock declines * an ETF loses value * an option expires worthless * a trading strategy fails
It also does not extend ordinary brokerage SIPC protection to Robinhood Crypto or Robinhood Derivatives accounts.
Where Robinhood is strongest
Low-cost stock and equity-options trading. $0 equity commissions and no standard stock/ETF option contract charge remain meaningful.
Legend. Robinhood now has a legitimate advanced trading platform rather than only a simplified app.
Crypto integration. Direct crypto, transfers, staking and multiple routing models create a broader crypto product than many traditional brokers provide.
Futures. Robinhood now offers genuine futures trading at relatively low stated commissions.
Prediction markets. Event contracts have become a major product category.
Fractional shares. Investing can begin at $1 in eligible securities.
IRAs. The ongoing contribution match differentiates Robinhood from most brokerages.
Managed investing. Robinhood Strategies adds a professional portfolio-management option from $50.
24 Hour Market. Eligible equities can trade through much of the week.
Gold integration. One subscription can affect cash, margin, IRA, options, futures and managed-account economics.
Where Robinhood is weaker
No mutual funds. Long-term investors who rely on traditional mutual funds need another brokerage.
No conventional individual-bond or Treasury marketplace. Fixed-income depth remains far below Fidelity, Schwab or Merrill.
Crypto pricing is less simple than the "zero commission" reputation suggests. Market-maker routing uses spread economics while exchange routing uses explicit fee tiers.
The platform is increasingly complex beneath a simple interface. Brokerage, crypto, futures, event contracts, advice and banking use different entities.
Outgoing transfers cost $100. That is a meaningful exit cost.
No options on futures. More specialized derivatives platforms provide broader futures-option capabilities.
Gold can become easy to overvalue. Its benefit depends on whether the customer actually uses the features attached to the subscription.
Stock Lending gives customers only part of the gross lending revenue. Robinhood retains most of the economics.
Who is Robinhood most appropriate for?
Robinhood makes the strongest case for investors who value ease of access to several modern trading products.
That can include someone who wants to combine:
* stocks * fractional shares * options * crypto * futures * event contracts
inside one consumer-oriented platform.
It can also work for a long-term investor using:
* recurring investments * a self-directed IRA * the IRA match * Robinhood Strategies
The case is weaker for investors whose portfolios depend heavily on:
* mutual funds * individual bonds * Treasury ladders * brokered CDs * extensive retirement-plan structures
Robinhood's current product is much broader than its original app.
The central trade-off is that broader access brings broader complexity.
The interface can still look simple.
The financial products underneath it increasingly are not.
