Fidelity: Platform Profile
We may earn a commission if you open an account through links on this page. Our editorial analysis is independent and is never influenced by commercial partnerships. Full disclosure.
Fidelity's strongest advantage is breadth without requiring an investor to give up much in any one mainstream area.
A single Fidelity relationship can cover taxable brokerage accounts, IRAs, mutual funds, stocks, ETFs, bonds, Treasury securities, options, HSAs, 529 plans, cash management, automated investing and direct cryptocurrency. Active traders now have Fidelity Trader+ across desktop, web and mobile, while long-term investors can automate recurring purchases or use Fidelity Go.
That range makes Fidelity unusually difficult to place in one narrow category.
It is a traditional brokerage, retirement platform, fund supermarket, robo-advisor, cash-management provider, research platform and — through a separate Fidelity Digital Assets legal structure — a direct crypto provider.
The weakness is partly the same as the strength: a platform this broad contains multiple account types, affiliated entities, investment products and protection regimes. A Fidelity brokerage account, an FDIC sweep deposit, a money market fund, a Fidelity Go advisory account and a Fidelity Crypto account can all appear inside the same broader ecosystem without being legally identical.

Fidelity's real advantage is account breadth
Many brokerages can handle a taxable account and an IRA.
Fidelity goes substantially further.
Its retail ecosystem includes:
- individual brokerage accounts
- joint brokerage accounts
- Traditional IRAs
- Roth IRAs
- Rollover IRAs
- SEP IRAs
- SIMPLE IRAs
- inherited IRAs
- Solo 401(k) and other small-business retirement arrangements
- HSAs
- 529 education accounts
- custodial accounts
- youth accounts
- trusts
- estates
- cash-management accounts
- managed accounts
- Fidelity Go
- direct crypto accounts
- crypto IRAs
That matters when a household has several financial jobs to solve.
An investor can keep an IRA, taxable portfolio, HSA, child's account, cash-management account and crypto account within the same broader Fidelity login instead of assembling a separate provider for each function.
Administrative convenience is not an investment return, but it can matter.
The more accounts a household owns, the more statements, beneficiaries, transfers, tax forms and security settings it has to manage.
Fidelity covers nearly every mainstream public-market investment
The standard brokerage platform supports:
- domestic stocks
- international stocks
- ETFs
- mutual funds
- options
- Treasury securities
- corporate bonds
- municipal bonds
- government agency securities
- brokered CDs
- REITs
- IPO access where available
Futures are a notable exception.
Fidelity is not a direct futures brokerage and should not be compared with tastytrade, TradeStation, Interactive Brokers or NinjaTrader as though the product menus were identical.
That distinction matters to sophisticated derivatives traders but not to most long-term investors.
Stock and ETF trading is straightforward
Eligible online U.S. stock and ETF trades carry a $0 commission.
Fractional shares make the account practical even when an investor is working with small dollar amounts.
Fidelity currently allows eligible stock and ETF purchases starting at $1.
Instead of needing enough money for a full share, the investor can specify a dollar amount.
That is particularly useful for:
- expensive individual stocks
- recurring purchases
- portfolio allocations using fixed dollar amounts
- smaller accounts
It also removes one longstanding friction in portfolio construction: cash left idle merely because a full share costs more than the amount available.
Recurring investing is broader than it used to be
Fidelity now supports recurring purchases of:
- stocks
- ETFs
- mutual funds
- Fidelity Basket Portfolios
Stocks, ETFs and baskets can generally be scheduled from $1, while mutual-fund recurring purchases begin at $10 subject to fund-specific requirements.
Schedules can be set weekly, every two weeks or monthly.
This is more consequential for long-term investors than another charting indicator.
An investor who receives income on a predictable schedule can automate the movement from cash into investments instead of relying on a manual trade each month.
Automation does not guarantee a better investment result.
It reduces the operational friction involved in following a plan.
Mutual funds remain one of Fidelity's strongest areas
Fidelity is more than an ETF brokerage.
Its platform offers Fidelity mutual funds plus thousands of outside funds.
Fidelity funds generally carry no Fidelity transaction fee.
Non-Fidelity No Transaction Fee funds can generally be purchased with no Fidelity transaction fee, although the current schedule imposes a $49.95 charge when certain NTF funds are redeemed within 60 days.
Transaction-fee non-Fidelity funds currently cost $49.95 to purchase under the standard online schedule.
Fund expenses remain separate.
A mutual fund can have:
- an expense ratio
- a sales load
- redemption terms
- other operating expenses
even when Fidelity charges no transaction fee.
That distinction is important because "free mutual fund trading" and "zero-cost fund ownership" are not the same statement.
Fidelity's ZERO funds are unusual
Fidelity also offers proprietary index mutual funds with 0.00% expense ratios.
That removes the fund management expense ratio for those particular products.
It does not mean every Fidelity fund has a zero expense ratio.
It also does not mean portfolio construction should begin and end with expense ratio.
The index methodology, exposure, tax consequences and role inside the portfolio still matter.
The relevant point for a platform review is narrower: Fidelity gives cost-sensitive mutual-fund investors investment choices that many competing brokers cannot duplicate exactly.
Fixed income is a serious part of the platform
Fidelity supports Treasury securities, corporate bonds, municipal bonds, government agency securities and brokered CDs.
Online U.S. Treasury auctions and secondary Treasury trades currently carry a $0 transaction fee.
Most secondary bonds and CDs under Fidelity's standard schedule are priced at $1 per bond.
New issues can be available without a separately stated transaction fee.
Fixed-income investors still need to distinguish commission from execution economics.
Bond dealers can earn compensation through:
- markups
- markdowns
- issuer compensation
- underwriting arrangements
depending on the transaction.
A "$0" or "$1" line item therefore does not necessarily describe every economic cost embedded in a fixed-income trade.
Options cost $0.65 per contract for most retail accounts
Fidelity charges:
- $0 base commission
- $0.65 per options contract
A 10-contract trade therefore carries $6.50 in standard contract fees before any applicable exchange or regulatory charges.
Fidelity also waives the contract fee on qualifying online buy-to-close orders when the option is priced at $0.65 or less.
That feature can matter near expiration.
A trader may want to close a nearly worthless short contract rather than retain assignment risk merely to avoid paying another contract fee.
Fidelity's pricing is simple compared with volume-tiered systems.
It is not necessarily cheapest for every trader.
A high-volume options trader should compare Fidelity's flat per-contract model with capped or volume-discounted structures elsewhere.
Fidelity's options tools are broader than the pricing alone suggests
Options trading includes:
- options chains
- multi-leg strategy support
- Greeks
- screening
- strategy analysis
- advanced charting
- approval-based strategy access
Fidelity therefore supports considerably more than occasional call or put purchases.
The platform still has a different orientation from tastytrade.
tastytrade centers much of its interface around derivatives.
Fidelity places options inside a much broader full-service investing ecosystem.
Which approach is more useful depends on what else the account needs to do.
Fidelity Trader+ changes the active-trading comparison
Fidelity's advanced platform is no longer just Active Trader Pro.
Fidelity Trader+ now spans:
- desktop
- web
- mobile
Fidelity Trader+ Desktop
The downloadable desktop platform supports Windows and macOS and is designed for multi-monitor active trading.
It includes advanced charting, customizable layouts and streamlined order entry.
Fidelity Trader+ Web
The browser platform provides configurable panels, streaming data, technical charting and trading directly from charts.
Fidelity currently supports stocks, ETFs, options and crypto within the broader Trader+ web experience.
Fidelity Trader+ Mobile
The Fidelity Investments app can enable an active-trading mode designed to keep charting and trading preferences more consistent across devices.
Active Trader Pro
Active Trader Pro remains available as Fidelity's legacy advanced desktop platform.
That should be treated as a legacy option rather than the entire current active-trading story.
Research remains a major Fidelity strength
Fidelity combines proprietary research with material from multiple independent research providers.
Research tools include:
- stock screeners
- ETF screeners
- mutual-fund research
- fixed-income research
- options analysis
- fundamental data
- technical charting
- market commentary
- analyst research
The value is not simply the quantity of reports.
A platform can reduce the need to move between unrelated websites every time the investor wants to examine a security, compare a fund or evaluate a fixed-income offering.
Research remains information, not a guarantee that an investment thesis is correct.
International trading is broader than buying ADRs
Fidelity also supports direct international stock trading.
Eligible nonretirement brokerage customers can access markets in 25 countries and transact using 16 supported currencies.
Trades can settle in U.S. dollars or local currency.
That gives investors more control than relying only on:
- ADRs
- U.S.-listed international ETFs
- multinational U.S. companies
Direct international trading brings additional complications.
These can include:
- currency conversion
- foreign transaction taxes
- different trading hours
- different settlement practices
- local market liquidity
- foreign regulatory standards
Fidelity's currency functionality exists to support international investing.
It should not be confused with Fidelity operating a conventional leveraged retail forex platform.
Fidelity Go makes Fidelity a robo-advisor as well as a broker
Fidelity Go is Fidelity's automated investment-management service.
There is no minimum to open the account.
At least $10 is required before Fidelity begins investing the portfolio.
The current advisory pricing is:
- $0 annually below $25,000
- 0.35% annually once the account reaches $25,000
At $25,000 and above, Fidelity also provides financial-coaching access and tax-loss harvesting for eligible taxable Fidelity Go accounts.
The portfolios primarily use Fidelity mutual funds designed for the program, including funds with zero expense ratios under the current structure.
The $0 tier makes Fidelity Go unusual among percentage-fee robo-advisors for smaller balances.
That does not automatically make it the lowest-cost solution for every investor.
A self-directed portfolio can avoid an advisory fee entirely.
The investor is paying for portfolio selection, monitoring and automated management once the Fidelity Go fee applies.
Fidelity's HSA is more than a spending account
The Fidelity HSA currently has:
- $0 retail account fee
- $0 Fidelity account minimum
- self-directed investing
- fractional shares
- stocks
- ETFs
- mutual funds
- managed-investing options
That is materially different from an HSA that requires a large cash balance before investments become available.
Employer-sponsored HSA arrangements can have different administrative terms.
The directly opened retail Fidelity HSA terms should therefore not be generalized to every workplace arrangement administered by Fidelity.
Cash management is useful, but the protection language matters
The Fidelity Cash Management Account is a brokerage account.
It is not a bank checking account.
It provides checking-like functionality such as:
- debit card
- checkwriting
- Bill Pay
- money movement
- ATM reimbursement
But the legal treatment of the cash depends on the selected core position.
Fidelity currently allows eligible Cash Management Account customers to use either:
- Fidelity Government Money Market Fund, SPAXX
- the FDIC-Insured Deposit Sweep Program
Those are not the same product.
SPAXX is not FDIC insured
SPAXX is a money market mutual fund.
It is a security.
It is not a bank deposit and is not FDIC insured.
Eligible securities held through a SIPC-member brokerage can fall within SIPC's customer-property framework, subject to SIPC rules.
SIPC does not insure the fund's investment performance.
The FDIC sweep works differently
Under Fidelity's FDIC-Insured Deposit Sweep Program, eligible cash is deposited at one or more participating program banks.
Those deposits can qualify for FDIC insurance subject to the rules applicable to the individual depositor and bank.
The amount of available protection depends on factors such as:
- ownership category
- balances already held at the same bank
- participating-bank capacity
- program structure
The important distinction is where the money actually sits.
A Fidelity screen can show two cash balances that look similar while one is invested in a money market security and another has been swept to a bank deposit program.
Fidelity now belongs in the crypto category
The existing ROIStreet Fidelity review predates the platform's current crypto depth and should no longer treat crypto as merely an example of a product that other platforms might structure differently.
Fidelity currently offers direct cryptocurrency through Fidelity Digital Assets.
The current direct-crypto lineup includes:
- Bitcoin
- Ethereum
- Fidelity Digital Dollar
- Litecoin
- Solana
Customers can buy, sell, hold and transfer supported assets.
Fidelity also offers direct crypto inside eligible retirement structures through Fidelity Crypto IRAs.
That makes crypto a real product category for Fidelity rather than simply exposure through a Bitcoin ETF.
Fidelity Crypto is legally separate from the securities brokerage
This distinction is essential.
Traditional brokerage services are provided through Fidelity Brokerage Services LLC.
Related securities custody and clearing services are provided through National Financial Services LLC.
Fidelity Crypto trading and custody are provided through Fidelity Digital Assets, National Association.
Fidelity Digital Assets, National Association is a national trust bank.
Neither Fidelity Brokerage Services nor National Financial Services provides the direct crypto custody simply because the positions appear inside the broader Fidelity experience.
Crypto pricing is much higher than stock commissions
Fidelity Digital Assets currently charges a 1% trading fee on crypto buy and sell transactions.
Consider a hypothetical $5,000 crypto purchase.
A 1% buy fee equals:
$50.
If the position were later sold for $5,000, another 1% sell fee would equal:
$50.
That is a very different cost structure from Fidelity's $0 online U.S. stock and ETF commission.
The convenience of having crypto beside traditional investments should therefore be evaluated against the percentage-based transaction cost.
Crypto does not receive SIPC or FDIC protection
Fidelity explicitly states that its direct crypto assets are not:
- SIPC protected
- FDIC insured
- insured by another government agency
That remains true even though Fidelity Brokerage Services is a SIPC-member broker-dealer and the Fidelity brand also operates FDIC sweep programs elsewhere.
The consumer-facing brand does not override the legal structure of the asset.
This is precisely why investor-protection language needs to be product-specific.
Account transfers are unusually inexpensive
Fidelity's current standard fee schedule lists:
- $0 transfer-of-assets fee
- $0 domestic bank-wire fee
- $0 IRA closeout fee
That is a meaningful distinction from competitors charging $50, $75 or $125 to transfer an entire account.
A receiving institution can still impose its own charges in some transactions, and specialized assets can create operational complications.
But Fidelity itself does not currently impose a standard transfer-of-assets fee under its ordinary retail schedule.
Where Fidelity is strongest
Account breadth. Few mainstream platforms cover taxable investing, retirement, HSA, education, youth, cash management, advice and crypto as comprehensively.
Mutual funds. Fidelity remains particularly strong for investors who use traditional mutual funds rather than ETFs alone.
Fractional investing. Eligible stocks and ETFs can be purchased from $1.
Retirement infrastructure. Fidelity supports multiple IRA and small-business retirement structures plus a large workplace-retirement ecosystem.
Fixed income. Treasury, bond and brokered-CD access is substantially broader than at most app-first brokers.
Research. Fidelity provides a deep set of proprietary and independent research tools.
Trader+ platform family. Desktop, web and mobile now provide a more coherent active-trading environment.
Automation. Stocks, ETFs and mutual funds can all participate in recurring investing.
Fidelity Go. Smaller accounts can receive automated portfolio management without an advisory fee below $25,000.
Cash management. The combination of brokerage, spending features and selectable cash core structures can reduce the need for a separate cash-management provider.
No standard transfer-out fee. That removes one friction that remains common elsewhere.
Where Fidelity is weaker
No futures. Futures traders need another platform.
Not a dedicated retail forex broker. International currency conversion exists, but leveraged FX trading is not a core Fidelity brokerage product.
Crypto selection remains limited. Five direct assets are a very small universe compared with dedicated crypto exchanges.
Crypto costs are materially higher than stock commissions. A 1% fee on both buys and sells becomes significant as trade size increases.
The platform is complex because the institution is complex. Brokerage, advice, crypto, cash sweeps and managed products involve different affiliated legal entities and rules.
Options specialization is less pronounced than at derivatives-first brokers. Fidelity has serious options functionality, but traders whose workflow revolves entirely around multi-leg derivatives may prefer a more specialized interface or pricing model.
Some outside mutual funds remain expensive to transact. A $49.95 purchase fee on transaction-fee non-Fidelity funds is significant if an equivalent fund can be accessed elsewhere more cheaply.
Who is Fidelity most appropriate for?
Fidelity makes the strongest case for an investor who wants to consolidate several financial functions without giving up broad investment access.
That includes investors who need combinations such as:
- taxable brokerage plus IRA
- IRA plus mutual funds
- brokerage plus HSA
- long-term portfolio plus occasional options
- brokerage plus cash management
- self-directed investing plus automated management
- stocks plus direct crypto
- domestic plus international stocks
A trader focused exclusively on futures will need another broker.
A crypto trader who wants hundreds of tokens may find Fidelity's asset list too narrow.
A very high-volume options trader should compare Fidelity's flat per-contract pricing with specialized derivatives brokers.
But for an investor whose needs cross several account types, Fidelity's breadth is the feature that matters most.
The platform's value is not that every Fidelity product is individually unique.
It is that relatively few providers combine this many mainstream investing, retirement, cash-management, advisory and trading functions inside one broader ecosystem.
