Online Brokers Compared: Fees, Access, and Fit

Online brokers often advertise similar $0 stock commissions, but their structures diverge in options pricing, account minimums, product access, research tools, retirement accounts and which legal entity holds a given product.

This page compares published structure and access as of September 9, 2026. It does not rank expected returns or tell readers which brokerage account to open.

Educational comparison of published platform features. Not investment, tax, or legal advice. Not an offer or recommendation to open any account or buy any security. Some links are affiliate links. See disclosure.

How this comparison works

ROIStreet compares online brokers using published account and platform characteristics rather than expected returns or editorial preference. The rubric focuses on how the brokerage is structured, what investors can access, what published costs apply, and which protections or limitations require attention.

This rubric measures published structure and access; it does not evaluate expected returns or determine which investment is preferable.

Which platform fits which situation

Global multi-asset access

Interactive Brokers

Documents direct platform access across multiple asset classes plus substantial international market, country, and currency coverage.

Interactive Brokers documents access to 170 markets across 40 countries and the ability to fund and trade in 29 currencies, with stocks, options, futures, currencies, bonds and funds available from one platform. Its product breadth also includes direct crypto access through Paxos or Zero Hash for eligible accounts.

Not a fit if: A primarily domestic investor wants a very simple stock-and-ETF workflow and has little use for global markets, multiple pricing plans or advanced trading permissions.

Fact checked

Programmatic and active-trading tools

Webull

Documents both advanced active-trading interfaces and supported programmatic/API trading capabilities across multiple investment or trading products.

Webull combines desktop/web/mobile trading, paper trading and 24/5 access for eligible equities with an OpenAPI that currently supports stocks, options, futures, crypto and event contracts. Official SDKs and market-data interfaces make the API more than a simple portfolio-read connection.

Not a fit if: A broad mutual-fund marketplace, direct global exchange access or a branch/advisor relationship matters more than active-trading and programmatic tools.

Fact checked

IRA contribution-match structure

Robinhood

Publishes a self-directed IRA contribution-match program with defined match percentages, eligibility requirements, holding conditions, and applicable subscription terms.

Robinhood currently documents a 3% match on eligible annual contributions to self-directed IRAs for Gold subscribers and 1% without Gold, plus a 1% match on eligible IRA transfers and old 401(k) rollovers. The contribution match has holding and subscription conditions, so the terms matter as much as the headline percentage.

Not a fit if: The investor does not want the applicable holding conditions or Gold subscription requirement for the higher contribution match, or needs mutual funds and conventional individual-bond/Treasury access inside the same brokerage.

Fact checked

Brokerage + HSA/529 ecosystem

Fidelity

Documents self-directed brokerage alongside IRA, HSA, and 529 account structures within the same broader financial platform ecosystem.

Fidelity's broader account ecosystem extends beyond taxable brokerage and IRAs to health-savings and education accounts while retaining a conventional mutual-fund and fixed-income lineup. Direct crypto is available through a separate Fidelity Digital Assets structure rather than being treated as ordinary SIPC-protected brokerage property.

Not a fit if: Retail futures or a conventional spot-forex platform is an essential part of the account relationship.

Fact checked

Bank-linked brokerage structure

Merrill Edge

Provides self-directed brokerage integrated with a directly affiliated consumer-banking relationship, with documented cross-platform account connectivity.

Merrill Edge combines a conventional self-directed brokerage menu with the broader Bank of America relationship and Merrill research/tools. Its self-directed account supports stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, fixed income and options without adding futures, spot forex or direct crypto to the brokerage menu.

Not a fit if: Direct crypto, retail futures, spot forex or routine fractional-share purchasing is part of the intended investing workflow.

Platform notes

Charles Schwab

Charles Schwab combines a full-service brokerage with an active-trading stack built around thinkorswim. Standard brokerage accounts have no balance minimum, eligible online listed stock and ETF trades carry a $0 commission, and listed options use a $0 base commission plus a $0.65 per-contract fee. Schwab also documents mutual funds, fixed income, futures and retail forex within its broader trading offering.

Retirement-account depth is an important part of the platform. Schwab supports ordinary IRA structures and documents small-business retirement arrangements including Individual 401(k), SEP-IRA and SIMPLE IRA plans. thinkorswim adds desktop, web and mobile trading tools, paperMoney and access to products including options, futures and forex.

Direct spot crypto should not be marked as currently available. Schwab's current trading materials describe Schwab Crypto as coming soon, with the future crypto account to be offered through Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB. That distinction matters because announced access is not the same as a live customer product.

The broader Schwab relationship also crosses different legal and protection regimes. Securities brokerage, futures/forex and bank products should not be presented as though they carry identical protections.

Fact checked

Fidelity

Fidelity combines conventional self-directed brokerage with retirement, cash-management, health-savings, education and managed-investing accounts. Its standard retail brokerage account has no opening minimum, eligible online U.S. stock and ETF trades carry a $0 commission, and eligible fractional stock and ETF purchases can begin at $1. Standard online options pricing uses a $0 base commission plus a $0.65 per-contract fee.

The product menu includes mutual funds, individual bonds, Treasury securities, CDs, international stock access and direct crypto within the broader Fidelity ecosystem. The legal structure matters: securities brokerage is provided through Fidelity Brokerage Services with related securities custody through National Financial Services, while direct crypto is provided through Fidelity Digital Assets. Direct crypto is not SIPC- or FDIC-insured simply because it appears alongside brokerage assets.

Fidelity does not provide a conventional U.S. retail futures platform or retail spot-forex trading. That limits its relevance for investors who need those markets, even though its conventional brokerage and household-account range is extensive.

Fact checked

Interactive Brokers

Interactive Brokers is built around global multi-asset access. Its current materials advertise 170 markets across 40 countries and the ability to fund and trade in 29 currencies, with stocks, options, futures, currencies, bonds and funds available through a unified platform. U.S. stock pricing requires a qualification: IBKR Lite offers $0 commissions on eligible U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs for eligible U.S. residents, while IBKR Pro uses fixed or tiered pricing.

U.S. options pricing also varies by schedule and volume rather than collapsing neatly into one number. Interactive Brokers currently publishes U.S. options rates that can range from $0.15 to $0.65 per contract under its pricing structure. Futures, spot currencies, international securities, bonds, mutual funds, fractional shares, APIs and advanced trading platforms expand the menu further.

Direct crypto is available through Paxos or Zero Hash depending on account type and residence. Those crypto assets should not be described as ordinary SIPC-protected brokerage securities merely because access is integrated into the IBKR experience.

The tradeoff is complexity: pricing plans, trading permissions, market-data subscriptions and country-specific rules matter more here than at a basic domestic brokerage.

Fact checked

Merrill Edge

Merrill Edge is a conventional self-directed brokerage whose structural distinction is its connection to the broader Bank of America relationship. The self-directed account has no trade or balance minimum, eligible online stock and ETF trades carry a $0 commission, and options use a $0 base commission plus a $0.65 per-contract fee.

The investment menu covers stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, fixed-income and bond investments, and options. Merrill also provides research and trading tools within the Merrill ecosystem. For retirement, the current site documents Traditional, Roth and rollover pathways along with additional structures such as SEP and SIMPLE IRA plans.

The product menu is narrower than a multi-asset trading platform in several specific ways. Merrill does not provide ordinary retail futures, spot forex or direct cryptocurrency through the self-directed brokerage, and its current platform does not offer routine fractional-share purchases. Those omissions matter for someone building around newer trading products or dollar-based fractional investing, but they are less relevant to a portfolio centered on whole shares, funds and fixed income.

Bank of America integration is a structural feature, not an investment-performance advantage. It should be described as account integration rather than an endorsement.

Fact checked

Public

Public has developed into a multi-asset investing platform rather than a stock-only app. Its standard brokerage currently charges $0 for eligible U.S.-listed stock and ETF trades during regular market hours, while separate pricing can apply during extended hours for non-Premium customers. Public also supports fractional shares, stock and ETF options, individual bonds, Treasuries, direct crypto, Traditional and Roth IRAs, a cash-sweep product and selected alternative assets.

The fee structure requires more reading than the $0 stock headline suggests. Standard stock and ETF options currently carry no Public commission or per-contract fee, while index options have separate pricing. Fixed-income, crypto, Premium membership and other products can use different schedules.

The legal structure also matters. Ordinary securities brokerage is offered through Public Investing, while crypto services use a separate provider structure. Public's Crypto IRA documentation describes a transaction fee with a minimum of 1.25% through Zero Hash plus a monthly custody fee of 0.05%, with trading fees credited toward that custody fee under the current policy.

Public does not offer retail futures and should not be treated as having one fee or protection regime across every product visible in the interface.

Fact checked

Robinhood

Robinhood now spans stocks, ETFs, fractional shares, options, futures, direct crypto, event contracts, self-directed IRAs and managed portfolios. Eligible U.S. stock and ETF trades carry a $0 commission, standard stock and ETF options have no Robinhood base or per-contract fee, and index options use a separate fee schedule. Futures are provided through Robinhood Derivatives and carry separate Robinhood, regulatory and exchange charges.

The IRA contribution match is a notable account term. Robinhood currently documents a 3% match on eligible annual contributions for Gold subscribers and 1% without Gold in self-directed IRAs, plus a 1% match on eligible IRA transfers and old 401(k) rollovers. The terms are material: the higher contribution match requires Gold, Gold generally must be maintained for at least one year after the first Gold match, and assets that earned a match generally must remain in the IRA for five years to avoid a potential early match-removal fee.

Robinhood's expanded product menu increases legal complexity. Securities brokerage, futures/event contracts, crypto and managed accounts use different entities and protections. The platform still does not offer a conventional mutual-fund marketplace or ordinary individual-bond/Treasury marketplace.

Fact checked

SoFi Invest

SoFi Invest combines self-directed brokerage, robo investing and adjacent investment products inside the broader SoFi ecosystem. Self-directed investing can begin with $5, eligible stock and ETF trades use $0 online commissions, and current account documentation includes fractional shares, options, mutual funds and Traditional, Roth, Rollover and SEP IRA structures. Robo Investing is a separate advisory service with its own minimum and annual advisory fee.

The central structural issue is that SoFi Invest spans different providers. Self-directed securities are offered through SoFi Securities, robo investing through SoFi Wealth, and direct crypto through SoFi Bank. Crypto is not an FDIC-insured deposit and is not SIPC-protected merely because the service is offered by a bank.

Direct-crypto pricing also changed. SoFi's current Help Center documents monthly-volume tiers of 1.90%, 1.50%, 1.25% and 0.90%, with the applicable trading fee built into the displayed price. For orders entered by crypto amount, SoFi states that a spread of up to 0.10% may also apply.

SoFi does not provide retail futures or conventional spot forex.

Fact checked

Webull

Webull is organized around active-trading technology, but its current product set extends beyond stocks and charts. Eligible U.S.-listed stock and ETF trades carry a $0 commission, eligible fractional shares can begin at $1, and standard stock and ETF options have no Webull commission or per-contract fee. The current dedicated Pricing page lists a $0.50 per-contract fee for certain index options.

The platform also supports futures, direct crypto, fixed income, event contracts, IRAs, automated investing, paper trading and 24/5 trading in eligible equities. Webull's OpenAPI is particularly relevant to technically oriented users: its current documentation supports programmatic trading access across U.S. stocks, options, futures, crypto and event contracts, with HTTP APIs, streaming interfaces and official SDKs.

That breadth comes with product and entity complexity. Securities, futures, crypto and advisory services do not all use the same legal entity or protection regime, and some advanced market-data access can involve separate subscriptions. Webull also does not provide the kind of broad mutual-fund marketplace or direct global exchange access found at some conventional or globally oriented brokers.

The platform should therefore be evaluated as an active-trading ecosystem rather than simply as a $0-commission brokerage.

Fact checked

What actually drives your costs

A $0 stock commission describes a particular transaction, not the entire economics of a brokerage relationship. Many brokers in this comparison charge no commission for eligible online U.S. stock and ETF trades, but different charges can still apply to options contracts, index options, futures, fixed income, mutual funds, crypto, margin borrowing, account transfers, subscriptions, market data or other services.

Fund costs sit at a different layer. An ETF or mutual fund can have its own operating expenses even when the broker charges nothing to place the trade. Bid-ask spread is another transaction cost: the price available to buy can differ from the price available to sell. Some brokers also receive payment for order flow on eligible transactions. That payment is not a line-item commission charged to the customer, but order-routing incentives and execution quality still matter when evaluating how a trade is handled.

Account-level costs can be easy to miss because they may occur infrequently. Examples include outgoing transfer fees, inactivity fees, wire charges, premium subscriptions and margin interest. Crypto, futures and other products can use fee schedules and legal entities separate from the ordinary securities brokerage.

Illustrative example — not actual platform pricing

Assume an investor buys $5,000 of an ETF through a broker advertising a $0 eligible online commission. The broker may charge no commission for that trade, while the ETF can still have its own operating expenses and the investor can incur a bid-ask spread. If that same investor later uses options, margin, premium data or transfers the account, separate charges may apply. Illustrative only. The $5,000 amount is not a claim about any named broker or investment.

Who this page is not for

  • People who need individualized fiduciary portfolio advice rather than a self-directed brokerage comparison.
  • Readers looking for a list of stocks, ETFs or other securities to buy.
  • Investors who want to compare past investment returns as though those returns determine which brokerage account is appropriate.
  • Anyone assuming a $0 headline commission means every transaction, product or account feature has no economic cost.

Methodology

How ROIStreet verifies broker information

ROIStreet treats brokerage pricing and product access as point-in-time facts. The primary evidence for this page is the broker's current fee schedule, product documentation, account documentation and legal disclosures. Regulatory or investor-protection explanations use authoritative sources such as SIPC and Investor.gov.

The comparison table does not maintain a second copy of platform facts. It resolves the current canonical ROIStreet review records, and a newly discovered factual change must be corrected in the relevant review record before it can control the roundup. This prevents the review and comparison page from presenting different answers for the same fee, minimum or product.

A $0 commission is preserved with its qualification rather than generalized into “free trading.” Products offered under the same brand are also separated by legal entity where that distinction changes the protection framework. SIPC protection is not market-loss insurance, and crypto, futures, bank deposits and advisory products should not inherit a securities-brokerage label simply because they appear in the same app.

Fit labels are editorial signposts tied to documented structure. They are not scores, forecasts or recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a recommendation to use one of these brokers?

No. ROIStreet compares published platform features, costs, account access and structural tradeoffs for educational purposes. The page does not determine whether a brokerage account, trading product or investment is appropriate for a particular reader.

Does ROIStreet get paid if I open a brokerage account?

ROIStreet may receive compensation from some affiliate links. Affiliate relationships do not determine which facts are included, how the rubric is written or which structural tradeoffs are discussed. See /legal/affiliate-disclosure for details.

Why doesn't ROIStreet use star ratings for online brokers?

A single rating compresses several different questions into one number. ROIStreet instead publishes the comparison dimensions and shows documented differences in pricing, account access, investment range, tools and investor-protection structure so readers can see what is being compared.

How often is this online-broker comparison updated?

The page is scheduled for review during the first week of each month and after material changes to fees, account access, investment products or legal/platform structure. The visible update log shows the latest completed editorial review.

Does $0 commission mean a brokerage account is free?

No. A $0 commission can apply to a specific trade while other costs remain, including options or futures charges, bid-ask spreads, fund expenses, subscriptions, margin interest, transfer fees, market-data costs and regulatory or exchange charges. The applicable costs depend on the account, product and transaction.

Does SIPC protect brokerage accounts from investment losses?

No. SIPC protection applies in specified circumstances when a SIPC-member brokerage fails and customer securities or eligible cash are missing. It does not protect against market losses, and it generally does not cover commodities or futures contracts. Products such as direct crypto can also sit outside the ordinary SIPC brokerage framework.
