IRA Accounts Compared: Fees, Investment Access, and Fit

An IRA is a tax-advantaged retirement account, and the provider you hold it with determines the practical details: what the account costs to keep, what you can buy inside it, whether contributions can be automated, how a rollover or Roth conversion is handled, and what happens to uninvested cash. Those details are published by each firm and differ meaningfully from one platform to the next.

This page compares eight platforms already documented in ROIStreet's canonical platform records — Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Vanguard, E*TRADE, Merrill Edge, Robinhood, SoFi Invest and Betterment — across nineteen published IRA dimensions. Nothing here is ranked, scored or recommended, and nothing on this page is tax advice. Account availability is not the same as your personal eligibility to contribute, and a documented conversion workflow is not a statement that a conversion is appropriate for you.

Educational comparison of published platform features. Not investment, tax, or legal advice. Not an offer or recommendation to open any account or buy any security. Some links are affiliate links. See disclosure.

How this comparison works

ROIStreet compares IRA accounts across seven documented dimensions. Each dimension records what a platform publishes, not how well ROIStreet thinks it performs. Weights describe how much attention each dimension receives in the comparison, not a score.

Evaluation dimensions and their weights
DimensionWeightWhat it covers
IRA fees and minimums20%Documents published account fees, subscription charges, advisory fees where relevant, account-opening minimums, minimums to begin investing, and material closure or transfer costs. Preserve product/tier distinctions.
IRA account types and eligibility15%Documents which IRA structures are supported, such as Traditional, Roth, Rollover, SEP, SIMPLE or inherited/beneficiary IRA where applicable. Do not infer tax eligibility from account availability.
Investment access15%Documents the investments available inside the IRA, including stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, fixed income, options, fractional shares, managed portfolios or other supported assets. More investment choice is not automatically better.
Recurring investing and fractional access10%Documents whether investors can automate contributions/investing and whether dollar-based or fractional investing is available inside the IRA. Preserve security-eligibility restrictions.
Rollover and conversion workflow15%Documents published support for IRA rollovers, direct trustee-to-trustee transfers, Roth conversions, rollover assistance or specialist support. This measures workflow/documentation, not whether a rollover or conversion is tax-appropriate.
Managed advice and service access10%Documents whether the platform offers managed IRA portfolios, robo-advisory service, financial coaching, human-advisor access or retirement support, including applicable minimums and fees.
Cash treatment and account infrastructure15%Documents how uninvested IRA cash is handled, the applicable cash sweep or money-market structure, investor-protection/legal-entity distinctions and any published variable yield. Separate cash economics from investment returns.

Published cash yield / APY if applicable
Not applicable to the managed portfolio. Separate Cash Reserve rates are variable and should not be presented as the robo portfolio's yield.

Vanguard ETFs can be bought fractionally from $1, while mutual-fund minimums vary by fund — some funds begin at $1,000 and most other Vanguard mutual funds at $3,000. Recurring investing is supported for eligible products, and options trading requires prior approval for each account, with IRA availability subject to account and strategy restrictions rather than being open to every strategy. Rollover and Roth conversion workflows are documented.

What actually drives your costs

IRA costs arrive in more than one layer, and the headline number rarely captures all of them.

An account-level fee is charged for holding the account. Several platforms in this comparison publish no annual IRA account fee; at least one publishes an annual account service fee that is waived under stated conditions such as electronic delivery.

An advisory fee applies when the IRA is managed rather than self-directed. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the balance per year, or occasionally as a flat monthly subscription, which behaves differently: a fixed dollar charge is a larger percentage of a small balance than of a large one.

Investment-level costs sit underneath both. ETFs and mutual funds carry their own expense ratios, which are not billed as a separate line item but still reduce returns.

Exit costs are easy to overlook. Published outbound transfer or closure fees among these platforms range from no fee to $100 per account, and promotional matches can add an early-removal fee if matched assets leave before the stated holding period.

Illustrative example — not actual platform pricing

Assume a hypothetical IRA holds $10,000.

  • A 0.25% annual advisory fee would be $25 per year.
  • A $5 monthly subscription would be $60 per year, equal to 0.60% of that balance.
  • A $25 annual account service fee would be 0.25% of that balance, and 0.025% of a $100,000 balance.
  • A hypothetical weighted fund expense ratio of 0.05% would represent another $5 per year.

Illustrative only. These figures are not the pricing of any named platform on this page.

Who this page is not for

  • Readers looking for a ranked list, star ratings or a single "top" IRA provider — this page publishes dimensions and tradeoffs instead.
  • Readers seeking tax advice on contribution limits, deductibility, conversions or required distributions.
  • Readers who need coverage of employer plans such as 401(k), 403(b) or Solo 401(k) accounts, which are outside this comparison.
  • Readers who need self-directed IRAs holding alternative assets such as real property or private placements through a specialty custodian.

Methodology

Every factual value on this page is read from ROIStreet's canonical platform records, which are compiled from each firm's own published account, pricing and disclosure materials and carry a record-level fact-check date. The comparison table does not store its own copy of those facts, so the table and the platform sections below cannot disagree.

ROIStreet does not score, rank or rate IRA providers. Where a firm publishes a nuanced fact — a fee that applies only under certain conditions, an investment type available only in some accounts, a match with a holding period — the nuance is preserved rather than compressed into yes or no.

Where a firm does not publish something, the page says so and dates the finding instead of inferring it. Promotional terms change frequently; dated offers are presented as dated findings, not as current guarantees. ROIStreet does not perform first-hand account testing and makes no claims of proprietary testing or personal experience.

Account structure is documented separately from tax treatment. Whether a Traditional, Roth, Rollover, SEP or SIMPLE IRA is available at a platform is a product fact; whether you may contribute, deduct or convert is governed by tax law and your own circumstances, and is a question for a qualified tax professional.

Frequently asked questions

Is this page a recommendation of one IRA provider?

No. ROIStreet compares published account types, fees, minimums, investment access, rollover and conversion workflows, advice options and cash treatment for educational purposes. The page does not determine whether any account or platform is appropriate for a particular person.

What is the difference between a Traditional IRA and a Roth IRA?

Both are individual retirement accounts, but they follow different tax rules. Contributions, deductibility, income limits, conversions and withdrawal treatment are set by tax law rather than by the platform, and they depend on your own circumstances. Availability of an account type at a platform does not establish that you are eligible to use it.

Do IRAs cost anything to hold?

It depends on the platform and the account structure. Several platforms in this comparison publish no annual IRA account fee for a self-directed IRA, while others publish an account service fee that can be waived under stated conditions, an advisory fee for a managed portfolio, or a fee at transfer or closure. The table shows each platform's published figures side by side.

What is a rollover, and do these platforms support one?

A rollover generally moves eligible assets from a former employer's retirement plan into an IRA. Every platform in this comparison documents a rollover or incoming-transfer workflow, and some publish dedicated specialist support. Whether a rollover is appropriate, and how it is taxed, depends on your situation and applicable rules.

What is a Roth conversion?

A Roth conversion generally moves eligible assets from a Traditional or similar IRA into a Roth IRA under applicable tax rules. All eight platforms document a conversion process, though some are handled online and others by request. Whether a conversion makes sense, and the tax consequences of one, is a matter for a qualified tax professional.

How is uninvested cash handled in an IRA?

Cash treatment varies. Some platforms sweep eligible cash to program banks under FDIC terms, some use a brokerage sweep or money-market position, and published yields are variable where they exist at all. Cash treatment is documented separately from investment returns on this page because the two are different economically and receive different protections.

What is an IRA match, and is it free money?

Some platforms advertise a percentage match on eligible IRA contributions, transfers or rollovers. Where a match exists in this comparison, it carries conditions — holding periods, subscription requirements, or exclusions for certain account types — and early removal of matched assets can trigger a fee. Other platforms advertise a one-time cash bonus, which is not the same as a contribution match.

Why doesn't ROIStreet rate IRA accounts?

A single score would combine unlike preferences into one number. Someone consolidating a workplace plan with specialist help is solving a different problem from someone automating small monthly contributions into a managed portfolio. ROIStreet publishes the dimensions so the tradeoffs stay visible.
