Merrill Edge and Fidelity both provide conventional brokerage capabilities without requiring investors to give up online self-direction. The important difference is where each brokerage sits.

Merrill Edge is tightly connected to Bank of America, N.A., BofA Global Research and Merrill advisory services. Fidelity operates as a broader standalone investment ecosystem spanning brokerage, proprietary mutual funds, retirement accounts, a retail HSA, fixed income, managed investing, direct crypto and cash management.

Every fact below is drawn from the two canonical ROIStreet review records. Where a fact is absent from a record, it is stated as not established rather than borrowed from the other platform.

Basic stock trading does not create much separation

Both records show $0 commissions on eligible online U.S. stock and ETF trades. Merrill Edge charges $29.95 for a broker-assisted equity trade; Fidelity's record notes a $0.001 per share exception for accounts designated Professional Equity Trader. Regulatory transaction fees and fund-level expenses remain separate at both.

Ordinary stock and ETF commissions are unlikely to decide the account.

Options pricing is also identical at the standard rate

Merrill Edge charges $0 base commission plus $0.65 per contract, with broker-assisted options trades at $29.95 plus $0.65 per contract. Fidelity charges $0 base commission plus $0.65 per contract, with $0 on qualifying online buy-to-close orders priced at $0.65 or less and $32.95 plus the per-contract fee for representative-assisted trades.

The standard contract price is the same. The platform and surrounding account structure matter more than the headline options rate here.

Fidelity has the broader documented active-platform family

Fidelity's canonical platform list is Fidelity Trader+ Desktop, Trader+ Web, Trader+ Mobile, Active Trader Pro Classic and the Fidelity Investments mobile app, with Level II quotes, streaming quotes, advanced charting, technical indicators and screeners.

Merrill Edge's current advanced environment is Merrill Edge MarketPro, a web-based platform launched from a Merrill Edge Self-Directed account on a desktop or laptop. It is not downloadable desktop software and is not available from mobile or tablet devices. It provides streaming quotes, advanced charting, Level II quotes, customisable workspaces, watchlists, news, research, options chains, options analysis, order entry, extended-hours order access where eligible, fundamental data and technical studies. Paper trading is not offered.

Fractional investing is a clear structural difference

Fidelity supports fractional purchases of eligible U.S. stocks and ETFs from $1, at $0 commission, to a precision of 0.001 share, with recurring stock, ETF, basket and mutual-fund investing.

Merrill Edge does not support ordinary self-directed fractional purchases of stocks and ETFs. Its record notes only that fractional positions can arise from dividend reinvestment or similar processes.

Mutual funds are a Fidelity strength

Fidelity is both a broker and a fund manufacturer. Its record includes Fidelity mutual funds at a $0 transaction fee, Fidelity ZERO expense-ratio funds, non-Fidelity NTF fund purchases at $0, transaction-fee fund purchases at $49.95 and a $49.95 short-term redemption fee on non-Fidelity NTF funds redeemed within 60 days.

Merrill Edge provides mutual-fund access with $0 on no-load NTF online transactions, $19.95 on online transaction-fee funds, $29.95 representative-assisted, $0 on load-waived funds and a $39.95 short-term redemption fee if held less than 90 days.

Both provide fund access. The distinction is Fidelity's vertically integrated proprietary fund line-up.

Fixed income is substantial at both

Merrill Edge shows $0 on online Treasury trades, $0 on new-issue fixed income where applicable including eligible brokered CDs, $1 per bond on secondary corporate, municipal and government agency bonds with a $10 minimum and $250 maximum, and $29.95 for a representative-assisted Treasury service charge.

Fidelity shows $0 on online Treasury auction and secondary trades, $0 on new-issue bonds and CDs where covered by the current schedule, and $1 per bond or CD on secondary bonds and CDs. Both records note that principal transactions can carry dealer compensation embedded in price.

Neither record supports a claim that one is universally cheaper across all fixed-income instruments.

Direct crypto creates a clear difference

Fidelity provides direct digital assets through Fidelity Digital Assets, National Association, a national trust bank, covering Bitcoin, Ethereum, the Fidelity Digital Dollar, Litecoin and Solana, at a 1% trading fee on buys and sells and $0 standard custody fee, with market and limit orders and external transfers in and out. Fidelity crypto is not SIPC protected and not FDIC insured.

Merrill Edge does not offer direct retail cryptocurrency trading. Crypto exposure would come only through eligible securities such as ETFs, which is not direct spot crypto.

Fidelity also supports direct crypto IRAs

Fidelity's record establishes crypto in Traditional, Roth and Rollover IRA structures alongside a crypto taxable account. Merrill Edge's record does not establish any direct-crypto retirement product.

For an investor specifically seeking direct crypto inside a retirement account, this is a Fidelity-specific capability.

Automated investing uses different economics

Merrill Guided Investing has a $1,000 minimum and a 0.45% annual program fee, invests in ETFs and mutual funds, and supports individual, joint, custodial, Traditional, Roth, SEP and SIMPLE IRA registrations. Merrill Guided Investing with Advisor has a $20,000 minimum and a 0.85% annual program fee with human advisor access.

Fidelity Go has a $0 minimum to open and $10 to begin investing, a $0 advisory fee under $25,000 and 0.35% annually at $25,000 and above, with financial coaching at $25,000 and above and portfolios built primarily from Fidelity Flex or zero-expense-ratio Fidelity mutual funds.

A lower fee does not by itself mean better advice; the service structures differ.

Fidelity's HSA is a specialty-account distinction

Fidelity's record establishes a retail HSA with a $0 individual account fee, a $0 minimum, self-directed investing and a managed HSA option, while noting that employer-provided HSA arrangements can have different recordkeeping economics or restrictions.

A direct retail investable HSA is not established in Merrill Edge's canonical record. For an investor consolidating an IRA, a taxable account and an HSA, that changes how many providers are needed.

Retirement account breadth overlaps, with different specialties

Merrill Edge establishes Traditional, Roth, rollover, inherited, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, individual 401(k), small-business retirement plans, 529 accounts, custodial UGMA/UTMA, trust, estate, managed and business accounts. Coverdell ESA is not offered.

Fidelity establishes Traditional, Roth, rollover, inherited, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, solo 401(k), small-business retirement plans, an HSA, 529 accounts, youth and custodial accounts, trust, managed, margin and robo-advisor accounts.

Banking integration is Merrill Edge's clearest relationship argument

Merrill Edge integrates with Bank of America, N.A. through a combined login ecosystem and a Bank of America rewards-eligible relationship across the Member, Preferred Plus, Preferred Honors and Premier tiers. Its record is explicit that rewards value depends on which Bank of America products the customer uses and is not an investment return, and that banking products come from Bank of America, N.A. and affiliated banks rather than the Merrill broker-dealer.

Fidelity's cash structure is a Cash Management Account, described in its record as a brokerage account and not a bank account, with a debit card, ATM fee reimbursement, bill pay and check writing, and core positions in the SPAXX government money market fund or the FDIC-Insured Deposit Sweep Program. SPAXX is a fund, not a bank deposit.

These are different legal structures, not two versions of the same product.

Research ecosystems differ by institution

Merrill Edge provides BofA Global Research, Morningstar, CFRA, Trading Central, OptionsPlay, Idea Builder, fixed income and mutual fund screeners and MarketPro analytics, with Merrill advisory pathways available alongside.

Fidelity provides independent research providers, screeners, options analysis, watchlists and international trading in 25 markets and 16 currencies with local-currency settlement.

Both have substantial research infrastructure attached to very different institutional ecosystems.

Practical distinction

A single ranking would not be useful.

Merrill Edge may fit better when the priority is Bank of America integration, BofA Global Research, Preferred Rewards benefits where applicable, conventional brokerage, Merrill advisory pathways and keeping banking and investing closely connected.

Fidelity may fit better when the priority is proprietary and ZERO mutual funds, a retail HSA, fractional investing from $1, direct crypto, crypto IRAs, broad retirement infrastructure, Fidelity Go and a deeper standalone investing ecosystem.
