Fidelity is a full-service U.S. brokerage. Its canonical record describes $0 online U.S. stock and ETF commissions, a $0.65 options contract fee, Fidelity and zero-expense-ratio mutual funds, a broad new-issue and secondary bond and CD inventory, fractional investing from $1, direct crypto through Fidelity Digital Assets, the Fidelity Go robo-advisory program, a retail HSA and a wide retirement, education, custodial and estate account range.
TradeStation is a trading-technology platform. Its canonical record describes TITAN X, TradeStation Desktop, Web Trading, Mobile, OptionStation Pro, FuturesPlus, EasyLanguage, RadarScreen, Portfolio Maestro, the TradeStation Simulator and a trading API, with volume-tiered options and futures schedules, direct market access and direct order routing.
Cost structure
Both records show $0 U.S. listed stock and ETF commissions, and both qualify it. Fidelity applies a $0.001 per share schedule only to accounts designated Professional Equity Trader. TradeStation states plainly that a $0 headline stock commission does not mean zero cost, because clearing at $0.003 per share, direct routing at $0.0048 per share and exchange and regulatory charges can still apply, with rates declining at higher monthly share volume.
Options pricing structures differ rather than simply differing in level. Fidelity is a flat $0.65 per contract, waived on qualifying online buy-to-close orders priced at $0.65 or less. TradeStation is volume tiered per contract, per side: single-leg options at $0.80 at 0 to 500 contracts a month, stepping to $0.60, $0.50 and $0 above 10,000 contracts a month, multi-leg at $0.40 stepping to $0, and index options at $1.00 down to $0.60. Direct-routed options add $1.00 per contract, per side. A low-volume account pays less at Fidelity; an account clearing more than 10,000 contracts a month can reach $0 per contract at TradeStation. TradeStation also notes that promotional pricing may temporarily grant qualifying new accounts higher-volume rates and is not the evergreen schedule.
Assignment and exercise diverge sharply: $0 standard commission at Fidelity against $14.95 per position at TradeStation, with early assignment or exercise at $1.50 per contract subject to a $5.95 minimum.
Ongoing account costs run the same direction. Fidelity records $0 account minimum, $0 annual fee, $0 IRA closeout and $0 transfer of assets. TradeStation records a $10 monthly inactivity fee unless activity requirements are met, a $35 IRA annual administration fee, a $50 IRA termination fee and $125 for an outgoing account transfer.
Product scope
Fidelity supports stocks, ETFs, options, index options, mutual funds, Treasuries, corporate, municipal and agency bonds, brokered CDs, REITs, IPOs, managed portfolios, crypto ETPs and direct crypto. It does not offer futures, futures options or retail forex.
TradeStation supports stocks, ETFs, options, index options, futures, micro futures, futures options, single-stock futures, IPOs, mutual funds at a $14.95 transaction fee, municipal bonds and Treasuries at a $50 transaction fee. Neither record establishes retail spot forex.
Crypto is the reverse asymmetry. Fidelity offers direct spot crypto through Fidelity Digital Assets, National Association, covering five assets at 1% with $0 custody and IRA support, though not FDIC insured and not SIPC protected. TradeStation terminated all U.S. crypto-related products and services on 22 February 2024, and its record is explicit that historical TradeStation Crypto pages do not represent a current product and that crypto-linked futures are regulated derivatives, not spot crypto.
Futures
Futures are the clearest gap. Fidelity does not offer them. TradeStation prices standard futures at $1.75 per contract, per side at 0 to 500 contracts a month, stepping to $1.00, $0.80 and $0.50 above 10,000 contracts a month, with micro futures from $0.50 down to $0.25 and a $0.10 per contract, per side clearing fee, plus exchange, regulatory and market-data charges. Futures options run $0.85 per contract, per side through FuturesPlus, across equity indexes, interest rates, energy, metals, agricultural products, currencies, volatility, crypto-linked futures and single-stock futures. Physical delivery is $150 per contract plus applicable delivery and exchange costs.
Platforms, automation and research
Fidelity supplies Trader+ Desktop, Web and Mobile, Active Trader Pro and the classic mobile app, with Level II quotes, streaming quotes, screeners, options chains, Greeks, probability and strategy analysis and independent research providers.
TradeStation supplies downloadable desktop software, market depth, direct market access, algorithmic trading, EasyLanguage strategy coding, RadarScreen real-time scanning, Portfolio Maestro portfolio-level backtesting, the TradeStation Simulator for paper trading and TradingView integration. Its API covers equities, options, futures, accounts, orders, positions, streaming quotes, market depth, options chains, historical data and advanced order types over REST and FIX, with a sandbox. Strategy coding, portfolio backtesting, paper trading and a public trading API are not established in the current Fidelity record.
Accounts and advice
Fidelity covers Traditional, Roth, rollover, inherited, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, solo 401(k), small-business retirement, 529, custodial UGMA/UTMA, youth, trust, estate, managed and cash management accounts, plus a retail HSA at $0 minimum and $0 individual account fee, with Fidelity Go at $0 below $25,000 and 0.35% at $25,000 and above.
TradeStation covers Traditional, Roth, rollover, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, custodial, trust, LLC, corporation, general and limited partnership, sole proprietorship and institutional accounts, and its record states that managed portfolios and a robo-advisor are not offered. A 529 and an HSA are not established in the TradeStation record.
Which fits which reader
The Fidelity record fits a reader whose priorities are funds, conventional fixed income, fractional investing, education and health savings accounts, custodial or youth accounts, crypto inside a retirement account, and a fee structure that does not penalise inactivity.
The TradeStation record fits a reader who codes or backtests strategies, trades futures or high monthly options volume, needs direct routing and market depth, or wants a simulator and API sandbox before committing capital.
Because TradeStation pricing is volume tiered and promotional rates are not evergreen, and Fidelity margin rates are variable and tiered by debit balance, verify current published schedules before funding either account.
