E*TRADE and TradeStation both offer active-trading tooling, but they sit at different points on the retail-to-professional spectrum.

E*TRADE is a full-service retail brokerage: flat per-contract options pricing, fractional shares, mutual funds, fixed income, direct crypto and a managed-portfolio option, with Power E*TRADE as the active-trading layer. TradeStation is a strategy-development platform: volume-tiered per-contract pricing, EasyLanguage, RadarScreen, Portfolio Maestro, direct market access and simulation.

A single ranking would not be useful. The structures answer different questions.

Stocks and ETFs

E*TRADE charges $0 commission on online U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs. Broker-assisted trades cost $20 plus applicable product pricing.

TradeStation charges $0 commission on U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs, with $0.003 per share clearing and $0.0048 per share direct-routing charges at the 0 to 100,000 shares per month tier, declining at higher volume, plus a $25 broker-assisted trade and a $10 monthly inactivity fee unless activity requirements are met.

Standard options pricing

E*TRADE charges a $0 base commission plus $0.65 per contract, with regulatory and exchange fees additional, and no contract fee to buy to close qualifying short equity options priced at $0.10 or less.

TradeStation charges a $0 base ticket plus $0.80 per contract, per side single-leg and $0.40 per contract, per side multi-leg at the 0 to 500 contracts per month tier, with a $1.00 per contract, per side index-option fee and $0.025 per contract clearing.

Active-trader options pricing

E*TRADE reduces the contract fee to $0.50 for clients placing 30 or more stock, ETF or options trades per quarter.

TradeStation's reduction comes from volume tiers rather than a qualifying-trade threshold: single-leg and multi-leg rates step down as monthly contract volume rises, and direct routing adds $1.00 per contract, per side where it is used.

A reader should model their own monthly contract volume rather than compare headline first-tier numbers.

Platforms

E*TRADE's canonical platform families are E*TRADE Web, the E*TRADE mobile app, Power E*TRADE Web, the Power E*TRADE App and the Power E*TRADE Pro desktop platform.

TradeStation's are TITAN X, TradeStation Desktop, Web Trading, Mobile, OptionStation Pro, FuturesPlus, the Trading API, EasyLanguage, RadarScreen and Portfolio Maestro.

Futures

E*TRADE charges $1.50 per contract, per side on standard futures and $2.50 per contract, per side on crypto futures where applicable, through E*TRADE Futures LLC on Power E*TRADE, with exchange and NFA fees additional.

TradeStation charges $1.75 per contract, per side on standard futures and $0.50 on micro futures at the first tier, declining to $0.50 and $0.25 above 10,000 contracts per month, with $0.10 per contract, per side clearing and $0.85 per contract, per side futures options through FuturesPlus.

Strategy development

TradeStation establishes EasyLanguage, algorithmic trading, market scanning through RadarScreen, direct market access and direct order routing.

An equivalent strategy-programming environment is not established in E*TRADE's canonical record. E*TRADE's active-trading tooling centres on Power E*TRADE's risk, probability and strategy-scanning features rather than a scripting language.

Backtesting and simulation

TradeStation establishes strategy backtesting, portfolio backtesting, simulated trading, options simulation and futures simulation.

Backtesting and simulated trading are not established in E*TRADE's canonical record and are not claimed here.

APIs

TradeStation offers REST, streaming and FIX connectivity with a sandbox, covering equities, options, futures, accounts, orders, positions, streaming quotes, market depth, options chains, historical data and advanced order types.

A comparable public trading API is not established in E*TRADE's canonical record.

Direct crypto

E*TRADE supports direct crypto in Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana through Zero Hash LLC at 0.50% of notional trade value, with a $10 minimum and $500,000 maximum trade, market and limit orders, 24/7 trading, and a separate non-brokerage account linked to an eligible brokerage account. Crypto is not SIPC or FDIC protected.

TradeStation terminated all U.S. crypto-related products and services on February 22, 2024, and no current spot-crypto offering is established. Crypto-linked futures are regulated derivatives, not spot crypto.

Forex

Neither canonical record establishes retail spot forex.

Fractional shares

E*TRADE supports fractional share purchases from $5, to three decimal places.

Fractional shares are not established in TradeStation's canonical record.

Mutual funds and fixed income

E*TRADE charges $0 on online mutual fund trades covered by current standard pricing, with fund-level loads and expenses separate, and $1 per bond on online secondary bonds with a $10 minimum and $250 maximum.

TradeStation charges $14.95 per mutual fund transaction, $14.95 plus $5 per bond or note on corporate and municipal bonds, and $50 on Treasury transactions.

For a reader who holds funds and bonds alongside trading, this is one of the larger structural gaps in the comparison.

Automated investing

E*TRADE offers a managed-portfolio option alongside self-directed accounts, with automatic investing and dividend reinvestment established in the canonical record.

TradeStation records managed portfolios and robo-advisory as not supported.

Institutional and professional orientation

TradeStation's canonical account list includes institutional accounts, LLC, partnership, corporation, trust and sole-proprietorship structures alongside individual and retirement accounts, consistent with a professional and semi-professional user base.

E*TRADE's record is oriented to retail brokerage and retirement accounts with a full product shelf.

ROIStreet does not assign a winner or star rating. Match the pricing tier you would actually reach, the products you hold, and whether you need a scripting and backtesting environment.
