Merrill Edge Review

Merrill Edge is most compelling when the investor already has — or wants — a broader Bank of America relationship.

Its self-directed brokerage covers stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, Treasury securities, brokered CDs and options. Merrill Edge MarketPro adds advanced charting, Level II data and research, while Merrill Guided Investing provides a separate professionally managed portfolio option.

What it does not try to be is just as important.

Merrill is not a futures platform. It does not offer retail forex trading or direct cryptocurrency accounts. It also remains one of the major U.S. brokerages without ordinary fractional-share purchases.

That makes Merrill Edge a stronger fit for traditional investors, retirement accounts and Bank of America households than for traders looking for the widest possible range of markets.

Where Merrill Edge fits

Merrill Edge sits closer to Fidelity and Schwab than to tastytrade or TradeStation.

Its strongest use case is holding a broad investment portfolio rather than specializing in derivatives or algorithmic trading.

An investor can own:

  • stocks
  • ETFs
  • mutual funds
  • Treasury securities
  • corporate bonds
  • municipal bonds
  • brokered CDs
  • options

inside the same brokerage ecosystem.

That is enough coverage for a large portion of individual investors.

The bigger differentiator comes from outside the brokerage itself: Merrill is closely integrated with Bank of America banking and rewards.

For someone who already keeps meaningful balances with Bank of America, moving investment assets to Merrill can affect the value of that broader relationship.

For someone with no interest in Bank of America, that advantage mostly disappears.

Stocks and ETFs cost $0 online

Merrill Edge Self-Directed charges $0 commissions for eligible online U.S. stock and ETF trades.

There is no standard account minimum.

The absence of a commission does not eliminate every cost. Regulatory transaction fees can apply to sales, and funds themselves can charge expense ratios.

Broker-assisted transactions also use different pricing.

The current representative-assisted stock-trade fee is $29.95.

For ordinary self-directed investors entering their own stock and ETF orders online, though, the brokerage commission is straightforward: $0.

The lack of fractional-share purchases is a real limitation

Merrill still does not offer ordinary customer-initiated fractional-share purchases of stocks and ETFs.

That matters most when:

  • a stock has a high share price
  • an investor contributes a fixed dollar amount
  • an investor wants every dollar invested
  • a portfolio uses precise target percentages

Suppose an investor has $100 available and wants to buy a stock trading at $400.

At a brokerage offering fractional shares, the investor could purchase approximately one-quarter of a share.

At Merrill, that ordinary purchase cannot be made as a fractional stock order.

Fractional positions can arise through processes such as dividend reinvestment, but that is different from allowing investors to enter a dollar-based fractional-share purchase.

This is one area where Fidelity, Interactive Brokers, Robinhood and several other competitors offer more flexibility.

Mutual funds are a major strength relative to trading-focused brokers

Merrill offers thousands of mutual funds.

That matters for retirement investors because mutual funds remain common in IRAs and long-term portfolios.

No-load, no-transaction-fee funds can be purchased online without a transaction fee, although Merrill currently applies a $39.95 short-term redemption fee if qualifying NTF funds are sold or exchanged within 90 days.

No-load funds that carry a transaction fee currently cost:

  • $19.95 online
  • $29.95 with representative assistance

Fund expense ratios and other fund-level costs remain separate.

This gives Merrill substantially more conventional long-term investment depth than a broker such as tastytrade, where mutual-fund purchases are not part of the core offering.

Fixed income is another meaningful strength

Merrill supports:

  • Treasury securities
  • corporate bonds
  • municipal bonds
  • government agency securities
  • brokered CDs

Online Treasury trades currently carry a $0 transaction fee.

Secondary-market corporate, municipal and government agency bonds are generally priced at $1 per bond, with a $10 minimum and $250 maximum.

New issues, including eligible brokered CDs, can have no separately stated online transaction fee.

Bond pricing still requires care.

A broker acting as principal can earn compensation through a markup or markdown. In that case, the economic cost may be embedded in the execution price instead of appearing as a separate commission.

Options pricing is simple

Merrill charges:

  • $0 base commission
  • $0.65 per options contract

A 10-contract transaction therefore carries $6.50 in contract charges before any other applicable fees.

The pricing does not become cheaper simply because the investor trades more often.

That makes Merrill's structure easier to understand than volume-tiered pricing such as TradeStation's, but potentially less attractive for certain high-volume traders.

Merrill also does not cap large opening option positions the way tastytrade does.

For the occasional options investor, the simplicity may matter more than specialized pricing.

MarketPro gives Merrill a legitimate active-trading platform

Merrill Edge MarketPro is the advanced side of the brokerage.

It is a web-based platform available through eligible Merrill Edge Self-Directed relationships and is launched from a desktop or laptop browser.

Tools include:

  • streaming quotes
  • Level II data
  • advanced charting
  • watchlists
  • options analysis
  • real-time research
  • technical studies
  • market news
  • customizable workspaces
  • direct order entry

The platform integrates BofA Global Research as well as third-party research and analytics.

MarketPro is therefore considerably more capable than the standard Merrill website.

It still does not turn Merrill into TradeStation or Interactive Brokers.

There is no comparable futures environment, open trading API or EasyLanguage-style strategy-development ecosystem.

Its strength is giving a conventional brokerage customer more serious research and trading tools without requiring a specialist platform.

Research is one of Merrill's better differentiators

BofA Global Research is integrated into Merrill's investing environment.

MarketPro can also surface research and data from third parties such as Morningstar and CFRA.

That creates a substantial research library for investors evaluating individual stocks, funds and broader markets.

Merrill also offers Idea Builder, screeners and investment-analysis tools.

For a self-directed investor who actually reads research before making decisions, this can be more useful than a brokerage trying to differentiate itself primarily through interface design.

Research does not make a recommendation correct.

Its value is giving the investor more information with which to evaluate an investment.

Merrill is particularly strong for retirement accounts

Available retirement structures include:

  • Traditional IRA
  • Roth IRA
  • Rollover IRA
  • Inherited IRA
  • SEP IRA
  • SIMPLE IRA

Merrill also supports additional employer and small-business retirement arrangements.

There is no minimum investment for the standard self-directed Traditional, Roth or Inherited IRA.

A full transfer or closeout of a self-directed retirement account currently costs $49.95.

That fee is worth knowing, but Merrill does not impose a standard annual self-directed IRA administration fee comparable to some specialized trading brokers.

The broader investment lineup also makes Merrill practical for an IRA using mutual funds, ETFs, bonds and individual securities.

Margin is available, but pricing is relationship-dependent

Eligible self-directed accounts can apply for margin once they have at least $2,000 in cash or margin-eligible securities.

Merrill does not present margin as one universal static rate.

Pricing depends on factors that can include:

  • the amount borrowed
  • Merrill's base lending rate
  • the client's broader Bank of America and Merrill relationship

The base lending rate can change.

That makes an evergreen headline APR potentially misleading.

Anyone expecting to maintain a significant margin debit should obtain the current rate for the specific account rather than relying on an old published comparison.

Merrill Guided Investing creates a second use case

Not every Merrill customer has to manage investments personally.

Merrill Guided Investing is a professionally managed investment advisory program.

The current minimum is $1,000.

The annual program fee is 0.45%.

Portfolios can use ETFs and mutual funds and are managed according to Merrill's portfolio strategy process.

Available account structures include taxable and retirement accounts.

This is different from a self-directed Merrill Edge account.

The investor is paying Merrill to manage the portfolio rather than choosing every security and trade personally.

Guided Investing with Advisor adds human advice at a higher cost

Merrill also offers Guided Investing with Advisor.

That version currently has:

  • a $20,000 minimum
  • a 0.85% annual program fee

The higher fee pays for access to an advisor in addition to the managed investment program.

The distinction matters because comparing Merrill's 0.45% online managed product with another service charging for human advice would not be an equal comparison.

Likewise, temporary promotional fee waivers should not be treated as the normal long-term program cost.

Bank of America integration is the strongest strategic reason to choose Merrill

Merrill's biggest advantage is difficult for a standalone brokerage to reproduce.

Bank of America customers can connect banking and investing relationships within the same broader ecosystem.

Qualifying Merrill investment balances can count toward BofA Rewards qualification.

The rewards program currently uses tiers including:

  • Member
  • Preferred Plus
  • Preferred Honors
  • Premier

Higher qualifying relationship balances can unlock different banking, credit-card, lending and lifestyle benefits depending on the tier and products involved.

That can change the economics of choosing a brokerage.

Consider two brokers that charge the same $0 stock commission.

If holding investments at one of them improves rewards on a credit card or reduces banking costs the investor already incurs, the broader relationship can create value that the brokerage fee comparison does not capture.

That value is highly personal.

Someone who does not use Bank of America products may receive little benefit from it.

Banking and investing protections should not be confused

The connection between Merrill and Bank of America can make the financial ecosystem feel unified.

Legally, the products remain different.

Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Incorporated provides investment products.

Bank of America, N.A. and affiliated banks provide banking products.

Eligible bank deposits may receive FDIC insurance subject to applicable limits.

Stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds and options are not FDIC insured merely because Bank of America owns Merrill.

They can lose value.

Brokered CDs require another distinction

Merrill also sells brokered CDs issued by banks.

Eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured issuing bank can qualify for FDIC insurance subject to applicable limits and ownership rules.

Merrill itself is not the bank providing that deposit insurance.

Investors are responsible for considering all deposits they hold at the same issuing bank when determining insurance coverage.

Selling a brokered CD before maturity can also result in a gain or loss because its market value can change.

FDIC protection of principal at an eligible bank failure does not guarantee a favorable secondary-market sale price.

SIPC does not protect investment performance

MLPF&S is a SIPC member.

SIPC protection is designed for certain situations involving a failed member broker-dealer and missing eligible customer property, subject to statutory rules and limits.

It does not protect against ordinary investment losses.

If an investor buys a stock for $100 and it falls to $50, SIPC does not restore the lost $50.

This distinction should remain explicit anywhere Merrill's Bank of America relationship or regulatory status is discussed.

Merrill's transfer fee is lower than several competitors

A full outgoing Merrill Edge Self-Directed account transfer currently costs $49.95.

Partial transfers are currently $0.

That is less than the $75 to $125 full-transfer fees charged by some competing brokers.

The fee still matters if an investor expects to move the entire account, but it is not unusually high within the industry.

Self-directed wire transfers currently cost $24.95.

Where Merrill Edge is strongest

  • Bank of America integration. This is Merrill's clearest structural advantage over standalone brokerages.
  • Broad traditional investment lineup. Stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, Treasuries, CDs and options cover most conventional investor needs.
  • Research. BofA Global Research and third-party data provide considerably more depth than many app-first brokerages.
  • Retirement accounts. Multiple IRA types and long-term investment products make Merrill practical for retirement portfolios.
  • Fixed income. Treasury, bond and brokered-CD access is useful for investors building portfolios beyond equities.
  • MarketPro. Active investors get Level II quotes, charting, options analytics and streaming research without leaving Merrill.
  • Managed investing. Guided Investing gives customers a path from self-directed investing to professional portfolio management.

Where Merrill Edge is weaker

  • No ordinary fractional-share purchases. This remains a significant omission for dollar-based investors.
  • No futures. Active futures traders need another broker.
  • No retail forex. Merrill is not designed as an FX trading venue.
  • No direct cryptocurrency. Crypto exposure must come through securities such as eligible ETFs rather than a spot-crypto account.
  • Options tools do not equal a specialist derivatives platform. Merrill supports options well enough for many investors but does not match the derivatives specialization of tastytrade or TradeStation.
  • No open trading API or algorithmic-development environment. Developers and systematic traders have stronger choices elsewhere.
  • MarketPro is desktop/laptop browser oriented. It cannot currently be launched from a mobile or tablet device.

Who is Merrill Edge most appropriate for?

Merrill Edge is strongest for investors who value conventional investment breadth and Bank of America integration.

It is particularly sensible for someone who:

  • already uses Bank of America
  • has meaningful qualifying balances
  • wants IRAs and mutual funds
  • wants bonds and Treasury access
  • occasionally trades options
  • values professional research
  • may eventually want a managed portfolio

The case is weaker for someone primarily interested in:

  • futures
  • forex
  • cryptocurrency
  • fractional-share investing
  • high-frequency options trading
  • algorithmic trading
  • APIs

That distinction is useful because Merrill does not need to be the most technically advanced brokerage to be competitive.

Its real advantage is that a brokerage account can become part of a much larger financial relationship.

For the investor who values that relationship, Merrill Edge can be unusually practical.

For the investor who does not, the decision should come back to the ordinary brokerage fundamentals: investment availability, trading tools, pricing and account features.
