Merrill Edge and E*TRADE are both brokerage arms of very large financial institutions: Merrill Edge inside Bank of America and E*TRADE inside Morgan Stanley. The account structures rhyme; the trading capability does not.

Every fact below comes from the two canonical ROIStreet review records. Where a record does not establish a fact, it is stated as not established rather than assumed from the other platform.

Stock commissions are effectively equivalent

Both records show $0 commissions on eligible online U.S. stock and ETF trades and $0 account minimums. Merrill Edge charges $29.95 for a broker-assisted equity trade; E*TRADE charges $20 for broker-assisted service plus applicable product pricing.

Ordinary equity commissions will not decide this account.

Options pricing separates at higher activity

Both charge $0 base commission plus $0.65 per contract at the standard rate. E*TRADE lowers the contract fee to $0.50 for customers who execute at least 30 stock, ETF or options trades per quarter.

Merrill Edge's canonical record does not establish an activity-based options discount. For a frequent options trader, that difference compounds; for an occasional trader it is irrelevant.

Power E*TRADE is a deeper active-trading environment

E*TRADE's platform family is E*TRADE Web, the E*TRADE mobile app, Power E*TRADE Web, the Power E*TRADE App and Power E*TRADE Pro desktop, with Level II quotes, advanced charting, a futures ladder, options risk analysis, options probability tools, advanced order types and extended-hours trading.

Merrill Edge's advanced environment is Merrill Edge MarketPro, a web-based platform launched from a Self-Directed account on a desktop or laptop. It is not downloadable software and is not available on mobile or tablet. It provides streaming quotes, advanced charting, Level II quotes, customisable workspaces, options chains and analysis, research and technical studies, and does not include paper trading.

Futures are an E*TRADE-only product here

E*TRADE supports listed futures at $1.50 per contract per side and crypto futures at $2.50 per contract per side, with a futures ladder in Power E*TRADE and futures options coverage.

Merrill Edge does not offer direct retail futures trading. That is a product-scope difference, not a pricing difference.

Fractional investing differs

E*TRADE supports fractional purchases of eligible securities from a $5 minimum trade, to three decimal places, with automatic investing.

Merrill Edge does not support ordinary self-directed fractional purchases; fractional positions can arise only from dividend reinvestment or similar processes.

Direct crypto exists at E*TRADE, with structure attached

E*TRADE's direct crypto is provided through a separate Zero Hash account, covering Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana at a 0.50% notional trading fee, with 24/7 availability, a $10 minimum order and a $500,000 maximum order. That crypto account is not a brokerage account: it is not SIPC protected and not FDIC insured.

Merrill Edge does not offer direct retail cryptocurrency trading; exposure would come only through eligible securities such as ETFs.

Long-term investing capability is close

Merrill Edge shows mutual funds at $0 for no-load NTF online transactions, $19.95 for online transaction-fee funds and a $39.95 short-term redemption fee inside 90 days, with $0 online Treasury trades and $1 per bond on secondary corporate, municipal and agency bonds ($10 minimum, $250 maximum).

E*TRADE shows $0 online mutual-fund trade commissions where covered by current standard pricing, with fund-level loads or expenses separate, and $1 per bond on online secondary bonds with the same $10 minimum and $250 maximum.

Fixed-income economics are closely aligned. Mutual-fund schedules differ in structure.

Automated investing

Merrill Guided Investing has a $1,000 minimum and a 0.45% annual program fee; the advisor version has a $20,000 minimum and 0.85%.

E*TRADE Core Portfolios has a $500 minimum and a 0.30% annual advisory fee, using ETF portfolios with automatic rebalancing.

A lower advisory fee is not automatically a better service; the programmes differ in structure and in what human access they include.

Retirement and specialty accounts

Merrill Edge establishes Traditional, Roth, rollover and inherited IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, individual 401(k), small-business retirement plans, 529 accounts, custodial UGMA/UTMA, trust, estate, managed and business accounts, and explicitly does not offer a Coverdell ESA.

E*TRADE establishes Traditional, Roth, rollover and inherited IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, individual 401(k), business retirement accounts, IRAs for minors, custodial accounts, Coverdell ESA, trust, managed and margin accounts.

Both cover mainstream retirement planning; the specialty edges differ.

Banking sits differently at each firm

Merrill Edge integrates with Bank of America, N.A. through a combined login ecosystem and Preferred Rewards tiers, with the record noting that rewards value depends on which Bank of America products the customer uses and is not an investment return.

E*TRADE's record establishes that banking products are offered through Morgan Stanley Private Bank, National Association and are structurally distinct from securities accounts. It does not establish a rewards-tier programme of the Preferred Rewards type, and no E*TRADE cash yield is established in the canonical record.

Practical distinction

Merrill Edge may fit better when the priority is Bank of America integration, BofA Global Research, Preferred Rewards where applicable, Merrill advisory pathways and conventional brokerage.

E*TRADE may fit better when the priority is Power E*TRADE, an active-trader options rate at 30 or more qualifying trades per quarter, listed futures, fractional investing from $5, direct crypto through Zero Hash and Core Portfolios at a $500 minimum.
