Read the full Charles Schwab reviewMerrill Edge and Charles Schwab both connect brokerage accounts to much larger financial organisations. The similarities narrow quickly once active trading becomes important.
Merrill Edge's clearest distinction is its integration with Bank of America, N.A. Schwab's clearest distinctions are thinkorswim, listed futures, retail forex, Schwab Bank Investor Checking and Schwab Intelligent Portfolios.
Every fact below is drawn from the two canonical ROIStreet review records. Where a fact is absent from a record, it is stated as not established rather than borrowed from the other platform.
Stock and options commissions are close
Both records show $0 commissions on eligible online U.S. stock and ETF trades and $0 account minimums. Merrill Edge charges $29.95 for a broker-assisted equity trade; Schwab charges $25 for a broker-assisted trade, $5 for an automated phone trade and $6.95 on online OTC non-NMS securities.
Standard options pricing is also the same: $0 base commission plus $0.65 per contract at both. Merrill waives nothing on low-value closing trades in its record, while Schwab shows a $0 contract fee for qualifying online buy-to-close options priced at $0.05 or less.
thinkorswim is a major Schwab distinction
Schwab's active-trading family is thinkorswim desktop, thinkorswim web and thinkorswim mobile, alongside Schwab.com and Schwab Mobile, with market depth, Level II quotes, technical studies, streaming quotes and paperMoney simulated trading. Schwab's record also notes that StreetSmart Edge is not a current primary platform and that more than 1,300 eligible stocks and ETFs trade 24 hours a day, five days a week.
Merrill Edge's advanced environment is Merrill Edge MarketPro, a web-based platform launched from a Self-Directed account on a desktop or laptop. It is not downloadable software and is not available on mobile or tablet devices. It supports streaming quotes, advanced charting, Level II quotes, customisable workspaces, options chains and analysis, research and technical studies. Paper trading is not offered.
MarketPro is a capable web workstation. It is not the multi-asset derivatives environment that thinkorswim provides.
Futures are a Schwab-only product here
Schwab provides listed futures through Charles Schwab Futures and Forex LLC at $2.25 per contract per side, with futures options at the same rate, micro futures, and coverage across equity index, interest rate, currency, agricultural, metals, energy and crypto-linked contracts on thinkorswim. Exchange and NFA fees are additional.
Merrill Edge does not offer direct retail futures trading.
Retail forex is also Schwab-only
Schwab's record establishes more than 65 currency pairs through Charles Schwab Futures and Forex LLC on thinkorswim, with a $0 stated commission and transaction cost reflected in the bid/ask spread, roughly 23 hours a day five days a week. Its record is explicit that a $0 stated commission does not mean the transaction has no economic cost.
Merrill Edge does not establish retail spot forex. Currency-related securities are not the same product.
Fractional investing differs structurally
Schwab supports dollar-based and share-based fractional orders across most U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs from $1 at a $0 online fractional commission, and its record notes the current programme is broader than the legacy Stock Slices model.
Merrill Edge does not support ordinary self-directed fractional purchases; fractional positions can arise only from dividend reinvestment or similar processes.
Both support long-term traditional investing
Merrill Edge shows mutual funds at $0 for no-load NTF online transactions, $19.95 for online transaction-fee funds and a $39.95 short-term redemption fee inside 90 days; $0 online Treasury trades and $1 per bond on secondary corporate, municipal and agency bonds with a $10 minimum and $250 maximum.
Schwab shows $0 on no-transaction-fee fund purchases, up to $49.95 or $74.95 on transaction-fee funds depending on fund family, and a $49.95 short-term redemption fee on applicable NTF funds held 90 days or less; $0 on online Treasury auction and secondary trades and $1 per bond on secondary corporate, municipal and agency bonds with the same $10 minimum and $250 maximum.
Fixed-income pricing is closely aligned. Mutual-fund transaction-fee schedules are not.
Automated investing uses different structures
Merrill Guided Investing has a $1,000 minimum and a 0.45% annual program fee, with a $20,000 minimum and 0.85% fee for the version that adds advisor access.
Schwab Intelligent Portfolios has a $5,000 minimum and no separately stated advisory fee, but requires a cash allocation held as an FDIC-insured deposit at Schwab Bank, and Schwab's own record notes that investors still bear underlying ETF expenses and the indirect economics of that cash allocation, and that some cash alternatives outside the programme may pay higher yields. Tax-loss harvesting activates at $50,000 in invested assets subject to eligibility. Intelligent Portfolios Premium adds a $300 initial planning fee and $30 per month at a $25,000 minimum.
Describing Intelligent Portfolios simply as free would misstate its economics.
Crypto should be read at current state
Merrill Edge does not offer direct retail cryptocurrency trading.
Schwab Crypto is recorded as announced and coming soon as of 2026-09-02, with Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB named as provider, Bitcoin and Ethereum as announced assets, a 0.75% announced trading fee and a zero stated spread. Spot crypto is not currently supported. Crypto-linked futures and crypto ETPs are available but are not direct spot-crypto brokerage.
Neither platform currently offers a live direct spot-crypto product.
Banking is the most interesting ecosystem comparison
Merrill Edge integrates with Bank of America, N.A. through a combined login ecosystem and a rewards-eligible relationship across the Member, Preferred Plus, Preferred Honors and Premier tiers. Its record notes that rewards value depends on which Bank of America products the customer uses and is not an investment return.
Schwab offers Investor Checking through Charles Schwab Bank, SSB with a $0 monthly service fee, $0 minimum balance, unlimited eligible ATM cash-withdrawal fee rebates worldwide, $0 foreign transaction fees on eligible debit-card transactions and a required linked Schwab One brokerage account. Schwab One brokerage accounts themselves are not bank deposits and are not FDIC insured.
Merrill may matter more to an existing Bank of America household. Schwab's Investor Checking suits investors who want brokerage and checking together without a separate incumbent-bank relationship.
Research and advisory connections
Merrill Edge provides BofA Global Research, Morningstar, CFRA, Trading Central, OptionsPlay, Idea Builder and screeners, with Merrill advisory pathways alongside. Its broker-dealer is Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith Incorporated and its parent is Bank of America Corporation.
Schwab provides research, screeners, watchlists, market depth and options analysis inside thinkorswim and Schwab.com, with managed and advisory programmes available separately.
Practical distinction
A single ranking would not be useful.
Merrill Edge may fit better when the priority is Bank of America integration, BofA Global Research, Preferred Rewards where applicable, traditional brokerage and Merrill advisory relationships.
Charles Schwab may fit better when the priority is thinkorswim, listed futures, retail forex, fractional investing from $1, Intelligent Portfolios and Schwab Bank Investor Checking.
