What each platform is

Merrill Edge is the self-directed brokerage arm of a full bank and wealth-management relationship. Its canonical record describes $0 online U.S. stock and ETF commissions, a web-based advanced platform called Merrill Edge MarketPro, mutual funds, fixed income, a wide set of retirement and business account structures, Merrill Guided Investing, and Bank of America integration through Preferred Rewards.

Robinhood is a self-directed digital platform. Its canonical record describes $0 commission equities and options, a per-contract structure that differs for Gold and non-Gold members on index options, futures through Robinhood Derivatives LLC, direct spot crypto through Robinhood Crypto LLC, prediction markets, a 24 Hour Market session, Robinhood Legend as an advanced platform, fractional investing from $1, and Robinhood Strategies managed portfolios.

Cost structure

Both records show $0 online U.S. stock and ETF commissions. The difference is in the surrounding schedule. Merrill charges $0.65 per option contract and $29.95 for broker-assisted trades, and its margin rate structure is variable and tied to the debit balance, the Merrill base lending rate and the broader Bank of America relationship rather than to a fixed published number.

Robinhood charges $0 commission and $0 contract fee on equity options, with index options at $0.50 per contract for non-Gold members and $0.35 for Gold. Futures are $0.50 per contract for Gold and $0.75 for non-Gold, plus product-dependent exchange and regulatory fees. Direct crypto carries no explicit transaction fee, with compensation embedded in the spread up to 0.95%. Prediction-market pricing is probability weighted rather than a flat ticket fee, and Robinhood margin rates are variable, fact checked in the canonical record on 2026-09-02.

Product scope

The records establish materially different product ranges. Merrill supports mutual funds, Treasuries, new-issue and secondary fixed income, brokered CDs and index options, but not futures, spot forex or direct crypto, and ordinary self-directed fractional purchases are not supported. Robinhood supports futures, micro futures, direct spot crypto, event contracts and fractional investing from $1, but the record establishes no mutual funds, no direct bonds, no brokered CDs and no Treasury securities.

Platforms and access

Merrill Edge MarketPro is web based, launched from a Self-Directed account on a desktop or laptop; it is not downloadable software and is not available from mobile or tablet devices, and simulated trading is not established. Robinhood Legend carries no additional platform fee and covers charting, scanners, options chains and futures workflows alongside the mobile and classic web apps; simulated paper trading is not established in the Robinhood record either.

Robinhood also extends the trading day. Its record establishes a 7:00 a.m. ET premarket start, an 8:00 p.m. ET after-hours end, and a 24 Hour Market running Sunday 8 p.m. through Friday 8 p.m. ET on select stocks and ETFs using whole-share limit orders, with an explicit caution about thinner liquidity, wider spreads and higher volatility. Merrill establishes extended-hours order access where eligible through MarketPro, without an overnight session.

Automation and data

Robinhood establishes a crypto API. The canonical record does not establish a general securities trading API, so an automation requirement covering equities or options is not supported by the Robinhood record as written. Merrill establishes no public trading API. Neither record supports a strategy-backtesting workflow.

Accounts, banking and advice

Merrill covers Traditional, Roth, rollover and inherited IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, individual 401(k), small-business retirement, 529, custodial UGMA/UTMA, trust, estate and business accounts, with Coverdell ESA explicitly not supported. Robinhood covers Traditional and Roth IRAs, rollovers, Roth conversions, limited margin in IRAs and managed IRAs, with self-directed IRA contribution matches of 1% standard and 3% for Gold subject to holding and membership conditions.

Cash and banking differ structurally. Merrill sits inside Bank of America with Preferred Rewards. Robinhood Banking is provided through Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC, requires an annual Gold subscription, launched invite-only, and its record is explicit that Robinhood Banking, the brokerage cash sweep and the brokerage account are separate structures and that Robinhood Financial is not a bank. The Gold APY figure in the record is dated 2026-02-11 and is variable.

Which fits which reader

A reader whose portfolio centres on mutual funds, Treasuries, individual bonds, 529 or small-business retirement plans, or who wants a brokerage attached to an existing Bank of America banking relationship and BofA Global Research, is described by the Merrill Edge record. A reader who wants futures, direct spot crypto, prediction markets, overnight equity sessions, fractional investing from $1 or Gold-tier per-contract pricing is described by the Robinhood record.

Because several Robinhood economics in the canonical record are variable or dated, and because Merrill margin pricing is relationship dependent, verify current published figures before funding either account.
