What each platform is

Merrill Edge is a self-directed brokerage attached to a bank and wealth-management relationship. Its canonical record describes $0 online U.S. stock and ETF commissions, a $0.65 options contract fee, a web-based advanced platform, mutual funds, fixed income, managed portfolios and Bank of America integration.

Interactive Brokers is a global trading infrastructure. Its canonical record describes two account structures, IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro, access to 170 markets across 40 countries in 29 currencies, futures and futures options, spot forex, spot metals, spot crypto through third-party providers, event contracts, and a wide API surface.

Cost structure

The pricing models are not directly comparable. Merrill charges $0 for online U.S. stock and ETF trades and $0.65 per option contract, with variable margin pricing tied to the debit balance, the Merrill base lending rate and the broader Bank of America relationship.

IBKR Lite offers $0 commissions on qualifying U.S. exchange-listed stocks and ETFs and receives payment for order flow. IBKR Pro is priced per share: $0.005 per share fixed, or tiered starting at $0.0035 per share with a published low of $0.0005 per share at the highest volume tier, subject to a $1.00 minimum order and a 1% of trade value maximum where applicable. Pro options run $0.65 per contract fixed, or $0.15 to $0.65 tiered with a $0.35 minimum order. Lite and Pro differ in routing economics, not only in schedule.

IBKR margin figures in the canonical record are dated: 6.13% on Lite USD balances under a benchmark plus 2.5% formula, and 5.13% on the first $100,000 for Pro under a benchmark plus 1.5% formula, both fact checked 2026-09-02, with blended rates applied across balance tiers. The lowest institutional-size rate does not apply to an ordinary $10,000 or $50,000 debit balance.

Product scope

Merrill supports stocks, ETFs, options, index options, mutual funds, Treasuries, corporate, municipal and agency bonds, brokered CDs and managed portfolios. It does not support futures, spot forex or direct crypto, and ordinary self-directed fractional purchases are not supported.

IBKR adds futures, micro futures, futures options, crypto futures, spot forex, spot metals, warrants, structured products, international stocks, options and bonds, event contracts and spot crypto through Paxos Trust Company, N.A. and Zero Hash LLC. Its record is explicit that IBKR is not the counterparty to spot crypto trades and does not custody the assets, that crypto is neither FDIC insured nor SIPC protected, and that a single asset count is inaccurate without provider qualification. Crypto pricing runs 0.18% of trade value at the normal lowest-volume tier, 0.12% only at the highest published tier, with a $1.75 minimum and a cap of 1% of trade value.

Platforms, routing and automation

Merrill Edge MarketPro is web based, launched from a Self-Directed account on desktop or laptop, and is not downloadable or available on mobile or tablet. Simulated trading is not supported.

IBKR runs Trader Workstation, IBKR Desktop, Client Portal, IBKR Mobile, GlobalTrader, IMPACT and its prediction-market interface, with smart routing, direct routing, algorithmic orders, Risk Navigator, market scanners, Level I and Level II data and paper trading. Its API surface covers TWS, FIX, Web, Excel, market data, historical data, order entry, account data and event contracts. Merrill establishes no public trading API.

IBKR also runs overnight U.S. equity and ETF trading from 8:00 p.m. to 3:50 a.m. ET Sunday evening through Friday morning across more than 10,000 symbols, with overnight Treasuries and global bonds and limit orders only, and an explicit caution about thinner liquidity. Merrill establishes extended-hours order access where eligible through MarketPro.

Global reach and fractional investing

IBKR establishes 170 markets in 40 countries and 29 supported currencies, multi-currency accounts, and fractional investing from $1 across eligible U.S., Canadian and European stocks and ETFs with recurring investment support. Merrill does not establish comparable global market access, and self-directed fractional purchases are not supported.

Accounts and advice

Merrill covers Traditional, Roth, rollover and inherited IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, individual 401(k), small-business retirement, 529, custodial UGMA/UTMA, trust, estate and business accounts, with Merrill Guided Investing and Guided Investing with an Advisor for readers who want an advisory pathway. IBKR covers the retail IRA range plus portfolio margin, institutional, hedge fund, family office, professional advisor and proprietary trading group structures, and its record explicitly states there is no consumer robo-advisor.

Which fits which reader

The Merrill Edge record fits a reader whose priorities are mutual funds, fixed income, 529 and small-business retirement structures, BofA Global Research, an advisory pathway and integration with an existing Bank of America banking relationship. The Interactive Brokers record fits a reader who needs global market access, futures, spot forex, spot crypto, direct routing, algorithmic orders, paper trading, overnight sessions or programmatic access.

Because IBKR margin and per-share pricing are tiered and dated, and Merrill margin pricing is relationship dependent, verify current published schedules before funding either account.
