Interactive Brokers: Platform Profile

Platform profileUpdated 2026-09-06

We may earn a commission if you open an account through links on this page. Our editorial analysis is independent and is never influenced by commercial partnerships. Full disclosure.

Interactive Brokers is difficult to compare with a typical retail brokerage because it is built to solve a much larger problem.

A U.S. investor can use IBKR simply to buy a stock or ETF. But the same platform family also reaches options, futures, spot currencies, bonds, international markets, crypto, prediction markets, fractional shares, APIs and institutional trading tools.

That breadth is the reason to consider it.

It is also the reason some investors should not.

Someone who wants only a Roth IRA and three index funds may never use most of what Interactive Brokers has built. A trader moving among global stocks, options, currencies and futures—or building an automated trading system—faces a very different calculation.

Global access is IBKR's defining advantage

Interactive Brokers currently advertises access to approximately:

* 170 markets * 40 countries * 29 currencies

That is materially different from a brokerage that primarily offers U.S. securities plus a handful of foreign ADRs.

IBKR customers can access combinations of:

* international stocks * foreign-listed ETFs * options * futures * spot currencies * bonds * funds

inside one broader multi-currency account system.

For investors who actually trade globally, this can reduce the need to maintain separate country-specific brokerage accounts.

It also introduces complexity.

Foreign investments can involve:

* local exchange rules * foreign taxes * currency exposure * different settlement systems * market-specific fees * different trading hours * different liquidity

Global access creates opportunity to diversify where capital is invested.

It does not eliminate the risks of investing outside a home market.

IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro are economically different products

The old ROIStreet review mentioned Lite and Pro but did not explain the important distinction.

IBKR Lite offers qualifying U.S. retail customers $0 commissions on U.S. exchange-listed stocks and ETFs.

That zero-commission structure is supported partly through payment for order flow.

IBKR states that Lite stock and ETF orders are generally routed to selected market makers and that IBKR can receive payment from those venues.

IBKR Pro uses a different model.

Pro customers pay commissions but receive access to IB SmartRouting, and IBKR describes the standard Pro model as operating without payment for order flow.

This means the choice is not simply:

free versus paid.

It is also about:

* routing * execution model * pricing transparency * volume * trading sophistication

For an investor placing a few routine ETF trades, Lite may be simpler.

For an active trader who cares about routing, rebates and execution structure, Pro is the more relevant product.

IBKR Pro stock pricing rewards volume

The current U.S. Pro tiered stock schedule starts at:

$0.0035 per share

for the first monthly volume tier.

It falls through successive tiers to:

$0.0005 per share

for very high monthly volume.

The tiered minimum is currently $0.35 per order.

The fixed schedule is:

$0.005 per share

with a $1 minimum.

That means advertisements showing IBKR's lowest commission should be read carefully.

The lowest published rate is not automatically the rate a lower-volume trader receives.

Fractional shares now extend beyond the U.S.

IBKR supports fractional investing beginning at $1 in eligible:

* U.S. stocks and ETFs * Canadian stocks * European stocks

That is unusual.

Most fractional-share discussions focus on buying expensive U.S. technology stocks.

IBKR's broader implementation is more useful for investors building cross-border portfolios using dollar-based allocations.

Recurring Investments uses the same fractional-share infrastructure.

Eligible investors can schedule purchases:

* daily * weekly * monthly

That makes IBKR more practical for passive investing than its professional-trading reputation suggests.

Options are one of IBKR's strongest products

IBKR's U.S. options schedule is not a single fixed number.

Pro pricing varies with:

* option premium * monthly contract volume * routing * exchange costs

Current published Pro rates range from:

$0.65 per contract

down to:

$0.15 per contract

at the highest applicable volume tier.

Options with very small premiums can also receive lower per-contract rates.

IBKR Lite generally uses fixed pricing for eligible initial volume.

The pricing complexity is a trade-off.

A flat-rate broker is easier to explain.

IBKR gives higher-volume traders more opportunities for costs to decline.

The options toolset is deeper than the pricing

Trader Workstation and IBKR's other platforms support tools such as:

* Combo Builder * Strategy Builder * OptionTrader * Option Analytics * Options Portfolio * Volatility Lab * Option Strategy Lab * multi-leg orders * Greeks * risk modeling

This matters because options become much harder to manage once a position contains several:

* strikes * expirations * underlyings * volatility exposures

IBKR is built for that complexity.

Someone buying one covered call every few months probably does not need all of it.

Futures are another core market

IBKR provides futures and futures options across global exchanges.

Current headline U.S. pricing commonly ranges from:

$0.25 to $0.85 per contract

depending on contract and volume under applicable schedules.

Specialized contracts can differ materially.

For example:

* micro contracts * crypto futures * nano contracts * exchange-specific products

can have their own pricing.

Exchange and regulatory fees can also apply.

That makes a single "IBKR futures cost X" statement misleading.

The correct comparison depends on the actual contract being traded.

IBKR is a serious forex platform

Spot currencies are not treated as a side feature.

IBKR aggregates quotes from major FX dealers and charges a separate commission instead of describing the spread as free.

Current pricing ranges from approximately:

0.20 basis points of trade value

at the first tier down to:

0.08 basis points

at the highest volume tier.

The first-tier minimum is currently $2.

IBKR advertises spreads as narrow as 0.1 pip under applicable market conditions.

That pricing structure is important because "zero commission" forex models can instead embed broker compensation inside wider spreads.

IBKR exposes the commission separately.

Margin is one of IBKR's strongest pricing advantages—but the headline rate needs context

IBKR uses benchmark-based margin rates.

For U.S. dollar borrowing, the current structure begins roughly at:

* IBKR Pro: benchmark + 1.5% * IBKR Lite: benchmark + 2.5%

Higher Pro balances receive lower spreads over the benchmark.

As of the fact-check date, the current first $100,000 tier is approximately:

* 5.13% for Pro * 6.13% for Lite

Those numbers will move when benchmark rates change.

A more important point is the tier structure.

The extremely low rate shown for a very large institutional-size debit balance should not be used to describe what a smaller retail account pays.

Interactive Brokers has multiple serious trading platforms

The old ROIStreet article used vague phrases such as "professional trading platforms."

That misses the actual product lineup.

Trader Workstation

Trader Workstation, or TWS, remains the deepest professional platform.

It supports:

* stocks * options * futures * currencies * bonds * complex order types * algorithms * market depth * advanced portfolio and risk tools

TWS is powerful.

It is also one reason IBKR has a reputation for a steep learning curve.

Its interface exposes considerably more functionality than a typical consumer investing app.

For a professional trader, that can be useful.

For a beginner, it can initially feel excessive.

IBKR Desktop provides a more modern desktop experience

IBKR Desktop is a newer platform intended to reduce some of the friction associated with learning TWS.

It brings:

* charts * research * trading * options tools * portfolio information

into a more contemporary interface.

This gives investors a useful middle ground between simplified mobile apps and the full depth of TWS.

Client Portal handles more than account administration

Client Portal is browser-based.

Customers can:

* trade * manage positions * run market scanners * use PortfolioAnalyst * review statements * transfer funds * research investments

without installing desktop software.

For many investors, Client Portal can handle most ordinary brokerage tasks.

GlobalTrader simplifies international investing

GlobalTrader is IBKR's simpler mobile-first platform.

It provides access to more than 90 stock markets and also supports selected:

* options * crypto * forecast contracts

The design goal is different from TWS.

GlobalTrader tries to make global investing approachable without exposing every professional control on the first screen.

IMPACT provides a values-oriented interface

IMPACT is another IBKR mobile interface.

It allows investors to examine companies using stated values and sustainability criteria.

It also supports ordinary investing functions.

The existence of an impact score should not be confused with evidence that one company is objectively "better" than another.

It is a screening methodology.

APIs are a major reason developers choose IBKR

Interactive Brokers provides several ways to connect software to the brokerage.

These include:

* TWS API * Web / Client Portal APIs * FIX * Excel connectivity

Developers can access functions involving:

* account data * positions * orders * market data * historical data * stocks * options * futures * forex * crypto * event contracts

This is substantially more infrastructure than most consumer brokers expose.

A developer building an automated trading system may view API access as one of the primary reasons to choose IBKR.

An investor who never writes software receives little value from it.

Overnight trading is exceptionally broad

IBKR currently supports overnight trading in more than:

10,000 U.S. stocks and ETFs.

The overnight stock/ETF session generally runs:

8:00 p.m. ET to 3:50 a.m. ET

from Sunday evening through Friday morning.

IBKR also provides extended or overnight access to other products, including certain:

* bonds * futures * index options

The ability to trade overnight is useful when market-moving events occur outside U.S. hours.

It comes with a cost that does not appear as a commission.

Overnight markets can have:

* wider spreads * less depth * more volatile prices

A 2 a.m. quote may not have the same liquidity as the same security during the primary daytime session.

Interactive Brokers now has a substantive crypto offering

The crypto category is justified.

Direct crypto trading is integrated into IBKR's broader platform, but Interactive Brokers itself does not execute or custody the digital assets.

Crypto is provided through:

* Paxos * Zero Hash

depending on residence and account structure.

The crypto account is legally separate from the customer's ordinary securities brokerage assets.

That distinction matters.

IBKR's crypto selection has expanded sharply

Current published availability includes major assets such as:

* Bitcoin * Ethereum * Solana * Litecoin * Bitcoin Cash * Dogecoin * XRP * Cardano * Chainlink * Avalanche

and a growing list of additional assets through Zero Hash and Paxos.

The exact asset universe varies by provider and customer eligibility.

That makes it inaccurate to publish one universal coin count without explaining the provider.

Crypto pricing is relatively straightforward

Current crypto pricing ranges from:

0.18% of trade value

for the first monthly tier to:

0.12%

at higher monthly volume.

The normal minimum is:

$1.75 per order

but the minimum is capped at 1% of trade value.

IBKR states that it adds no additional spread, markup or custody fee.

The Paxos-linked structure can currently carry a small monthly Paxos account fee.

Compared with a $0 stock commission, crypto is clearly more expensive.

Compared with some dedicated crypto platforms, the percentage fee can still be competitive.

Crypto transfers make the account more useful

IBKR has expanded direct crypto transfers.

Eligible customers can transfer supported digital assets from external wallets or platforms into linked Paxos or Zero Hash accounts.

IBKR has also expanded stablecoin-based funding and withdrawal functions.

This matters because a crypto product that permits only buying and selling inside a closed brokerage interface is operationally different from one that supports movement to external wallets.

Transfer support still varies by:

* asset * provider * jurisdiction

Crypto is not covered by SIPC

This needs to remain explicit.

Interactive Brokers LLC is a SIPC-member securities broker.

Crypto held at Paxos or Zero Hash is outside that ordinary securities custody structure.

IBKR expressly states that those digital assets are not SIPC protected.

They should not be described as FDIC insured either.

The fact that a customer can view stocks and crypto in one interface does not make their legal protections identical.

Prediction markets are now a real IBKR product line

IBKR Prediction Markets and ForecastTrader let eligible customers trade event contracts based on yes-or-no outcomes.

Markets can involve areas such as:

* economic data * climate events * politics where permitted * futures-market outcomes

Customers can access contracts from:

* ForecastEx * Kalshi * CME Group

inside the broader IBKR environment.

Published event-contract costs currently begin as low as:

$0.01 per contract.

Prediction contracts are not ordinary investments

A YES contract priced at $0.40 can generally be understood as costing $0.40 for a contract that pays $1 if its defined outcome occurs.

The buyer's maximum loss can be the amount paid.

That limited dollar risk does not make prediction markets safe.

The position can expire worthless.

The result can also depend on:

* exact contract language * settlement source * cutoff time * resolution methodology

The event description matters more than the informal question a trader thinks is being answered.

ForecastEx is affiliated with Interactive Brokers

ForecastEx LLC is an Interactive Brokers affiliate.

It operates as a CFTC-regulated designated contract market and derivatives clearing organization.

Interactive Brokers LLC acts as a futures commission merchant and provides eligible customer access.

IBKR also routes access to prediction products from other exchanges.

These contracts belong in the prediction-market category, not the ordinary stock or options category merely because the trade appears in the same account.

Mutual funds and fixed income make IBKR more useful for conventional portfolios

Interactive Brokers is not only an active-trading broker.

Its Mutual Fund Marketplace includes both no-transaction-fee funds and transaction-fee funds.

For applicable U.S. funds, the standard transaction fee can be the lesser of:

3% of trade value

or:

$14.95.

Fixed income is priced differently from Fidelity, Schwab or Merrill.

IBKR's U.S. corporate-bond and CD schedule begins at:

10 basis points of face value

on the first $10,000.

Treasuries use much smaller basis-point charges, with a current $5 minimum.

That makes comparisons based on "$1 per bond" inappropriate.

Account-transfer fees are unusually favorable

Interactive Brokers currently charges:

$0

for ordinary incoming and outgoing ACATS transfers.

A customer's other brokerage can still impose its own outgoing fee.

IBKR also provides a limited number of free cash-withdrawal requests each month before method-specific charges begin.

This is a meaningful contrast with brokerages charging $50 to $125 merely to transfer the account away.

Retirement accounts are broader than the old review suggests

IBKR supports:

* Traditional IRA * Traditional Rollover IRA * Traditional Inherited IRA * Roth IRA * Roth Inherited IRA * SEP IRA * SIMPLE IRA

IRA accounts can support more sophisticated trading than many investors expect, including certain futures activity.

They remain subject to retirement-account restrictions.

For example, an IRA cannot simply borrow cash like an ordinary taxable margin account.

Interactive Brokers is regulated across securities and commodities

Interactive Brokers LLC is:

* an SEC-registered broker-dealer * a FINRA member * an NYSE member * a SIPC member * a CFTC-regulated futures commission merchant * an NFA member * a Forex Dealer Member

Identifiers include:

* FINRA CRD 36418 * SEC file 8-47257 * NFA ID 0258600

That regulatory breadth reflects the number of markets the firm supports.

It does not mean every product receives the same customer protection.

SIPC does not protect futures, forex, crypto or market performance

SIPC applies under its rules to eligible securities customer property.

It does not reimburse customers because:

* a stock falls * an option loses value * a futures position loses money * a currency moves against the trader * a prediction contract resolves NO * a crypto asset falls

Crypto held at Paxos or Zero Hash has its own separate custody structure.

Futures and forex operate under commodities rules rather than ordinary SIPC securities protection.

Where Interactive Brokers is strongest

Global access. Few retail-accessible brokers provide comparable reach across markets, countries and currencies.

Professional tools. TWS remains one of the deepest trading environments available to individual investors.

Multiple platform choices. Desktop, web and mobile customers no longer have to use TWS for everything.

Options and futures. Pricing and analytical tools scale well for active derivatives traders.

Forex. IBKR offers transparent commission-based spot-currency pricing rather than hiding the entire economics in a spread.

Margin. Benchmark-based rates remain a major attraction, particularly for Pro customers.

APIs. Developers and systematic traders have unusually broad connectivity.

Fractional global investing. Fractional support extends beyond U.S. securities.

Overnight markets. More than 10,000 U.S. stocks and ETFs can trade in the overnight session.

Crypto. The offering has evolved from a small add-on into a meaningful multi-provider product.

Prediction markets. ForecastTrader adds another genuine asset category rather than merely an educational widget.

Transfers. Standard ACATS transfers currently carry no IBKR fee.

Where Interactive Brokers is weaker

Complexity. The product range creates a steep learning curve.

TWS can overwhelm casual investors. Its depth is useful only if the investor needs it.

Pricing requires careful reading. Lite, Pro Fixed, Pro Tiered, product tiers, exchange charges and routing choices create more complexity than a simple flat-rate broker.

IBKR Lite uses payment for order flow. Investors who care about order-routing economics should understand that distinction.

Market-data subscriptions can matter. Serious traders may need paid real-time exchange data beyond the complimentary feeds.

Crypto custody is external. Paxos or Zero Hash, not Interactive Brokers LLC, holds the direct digital assets.

Crypto selection varies by provider. Not every customer gets the same asset list.

Margin rates are variable. Today's attractive rate can change with the benchmark.

Global access adds operational complexity. Tax, currency, exchange and regulatory considerations increase with international trading.

Who is Interactive Brokers most appropriate for?

Interactive Brokers makes the strongest case for investors and traders who will actually use its breadth.

That can include someone who wants to:

* trade international stocks directly * trade options actively * use futures * trade spot currencies * borrow on margin * build an automated strategy * connect through an API * access overnight markets * trade crypto beside traditional investments * use prediction markets * manage multiple currencies

The case is weaker for someone who wants only a simple ETF portfolio and values the easiest possible interface over breadth.

IBKR can absolutely handle that portfolio.

The question is whether the investor benefits from choosing an institution optimized for far more complex use cases.

For sophisticated investors, the complexity is often the point.

Interactive Brokers gives one account ecosystem access to markets and tools that would otherwise require several specialized providers.
