Merrill Edge is a self-directed brokerage attached to a bank and wealth-management relationship. Its canonical record describes $0 online U.S. stock and ETF commissions, a $0.65 options contract fee, mutual funds, Treasuries and individual bonds, a broad retirement and business account range, Merrill Guided Investing and Bank of America integration.
TradeStation is a trading-technology platform. Its canonical record describes TITAN X, TradeStation Desktop, Web Trading, Mobile, OptionStation Pro, FuturesPlus, EasyLanguage, RadarScreen, Portfolio Maestro, the TradeStation Simulator and a trading API, with volume-tiered options and futures schedules, direct market access and direct order routing.
Cost structure
Both records show $0 U.S. listed stock and ETF commissions. What sits beneath differs. Merrill adds $0.65 per option contract and $29.95 for broker-assisted trades, with variable margin pricing tied to the debit balance, the Merrill base lending rate and the broader Bank of America relationship.
TradeStation prices per contract, per side, on volume tiers. Single-leg options run $0.80 at 0 to 500 contracts per month, stepping to $0.60, $0.50 and $0 above 10,000 contracts per month; multi-leg runs $0.40 stepping to $0. Index options run $1.00 per contract, per side at the first tier down to $0.60. Direct-routed options add $1.00 per contract, per side, and assignment or exercise is $14.95 per position. The TradeStation record is explicit that a $0 headline stock commission does not mean zero cost, since clearing at $0.003 per share, direct routing at $0.0048 per share, exchange and regulatory charges can still apply, and that promotional pricing is not the evergreen schedule. TradeStation also charges a $10 monthly inactivity fee unless activity requirements are met, a $35 IRA annual administration fee and $125 for outgoing account transfers, against Merrill at $0 standard annual fee and $49.95 for a full outgoing transfer.
Product scope
Merrill supports stocks, ETFs, options, index options, mutual funds, Treasuries, corporate, municipal, agency bonds and brokered CDs, plus managed portfolios. TradeStation supports stocks, ETFs, options, index options, futures, micro futures, futures options, single-stock futures, IPOs, mutual funds at a $14.95 transaction fee, municipal bonds and Treasuries. Neither record establishes spot forex.
Crypto is a point of frequent confusion. The TradeStation record states that all crypto-related products and services in the U.S. market were terminated on 22 February 2024, that historical TradeStation Crypto pages do not represent a current product, and that crypto-linked futures are regulated derivatives that do not make TradeStation a spot-crypto platform. Merrill does not offer direct crypto either, and its record notes that crypto-related ETFs or securities are not direct crypto trading. Neither platform offers spot crypto today.
Futures
Futures are the clearest asymmetry. Merrill does not offer futures. TradeStation prices standard futures at $1.75 per contract, per side at 0 to 500 contracts per month, stepping to $1.00, $0.80 and $0.50 above 10,000 contracts per month, with micro futures from $0.50 down to $0.25 and a $0.10 per contract, per side clearing fee, plus exchange, regulatory and market-data charges. Futures options run $0.85 per contract, per side through FuturesPlus. Physical delivery is $150 per contract plus applicable delivery and exchange costs.
Platforms, automation and research
Merrill Edge MarketPro is web based, launched from a Self-Directed account on desktop or laptop, and is not downloadable or available on mobile or tablet; simulated trading is not supported. Its strength in the record is research: BofA Global Research, Morningstar, CFRA, Trading Central, OptionsPlay, Idea Builder and screeners.
TradeStation supplies downloadable desktop software, market depth, direct market access, algorithmic trading, EasyLanguage strategy coding, RadarScreen real-time scanning, Portfolio Maestro portfolio-level backtesting, the TradeStation Simulator for paper trading and TradingView integration. Its API covers equities, options, futures, accounts, orders, positions, streaming quotes, market depth, options chains, historical data and advanced order types over REST and FIX, with a sandbox. Merrill establishes no public trading API and no backtesting workflow.
Accounts and advice
Merrill covers Traditional, Roth, rollover and inherited IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, individual 401(k), small-business retirement, 529, custodial UGMA/UTMA, trust, estate and business accounts, with Merrill Guided Investing and Guided Investing with an Advisor. TradeStation covers Traditional, Roth, rollover, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, custodial, trust, LLC, corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship and institutional accounts, and its record states that managed portfolios and a robo-advisor are not offered. A 529 is not established in the TradeStation record.
Which fits which reader
The Merrill Edge record fits a reader whose priorities are mutual funds, conventional fixed income, 529 or small-business retirement structures, integrated bank access and human advisory pathways. The TradeStation record fits a reader who codes or backtests strategies, trades futures or high monthly options volume, needs direct routing and market depth, or wants a simulator and API before committing capital.
Because TradeStation pricing is volume tiered and promotional rates are not evergreen, and Merrill margin pricing is relationship dependent, verify current published schedules before funding either account.
