SoFi Invest: Platform Profile
We may earn a commission if you open an account through links on this page. Our editorial analysis is independent and is never influenced by commercial partnerships. Full disclosure.
SoFi Invest has become much broader than the low-cost stock-trading app it was several years ago. A single SoFi relationship can now include self-directed stocks and ETFs, options, mutual funds, IPO access, automated portfolios, retirement accounts, direct cryptocurrency and several forms of private-market exposure.
That breadth comes with an important complication: SoFi Invest is not one regulated entity.
Self-directed securities are offered through SoFi Securities LLC. Robo-advisory services are provided by SoFi Wealth LLC. Direct cryptocurrency is offered by SoFi Bank, N.A. Private-company and private-fund access can involve outside providers such as Templum.
Those legal distinctions determine which protections apply.
May fit better for
- investors who want brokerage and robo investing in one ecosystem
- investors already using other SoFi financial products
- investors interested in IPO or private-market access
- investors wanting direct crypto alongside conventional investments
- IRA investors who want self-directed or automated management
May fit less well for
- investors who want the deepest active-trading platform
- investors who want a zero-fee robo-advisor
- investors who dislike product-specific legal entities
- investors who want inexpensive private-market transactions
- investors who want futures or conventional retail forex
What SoFi Invest actually includes
SoFi Invest is a trade name covering two principal securities businesses.
SoFi Securities LLC
- Legal name: SoFi Securities LLC
- CRD: 151717
- SEC: 8-68389
- FINRA member: yes
- SIPC member: yes
SoFi Securities provides:
- self-directed brokerage
- stocks
- ETFs
- options
- mutual funds
- IPO access
- fractional shares
- applicable private-market securities
Clearing and custody of conventional securities are provided through Apex Clearing Corporation under the current SoFi disclosure structure.
SoFi Wealth LLC
- Legal name: SoFi Wealth LLC
- CRD: 167958
- SEC: 801-78185
- Registration: SEC-registered investment adviser
SoFi Wealth provides Robo Investing.
SoFi Bank, N.A.
Direct SoFi Crypto is offered by SoFi Bank, N.A.
That does not make cryptocurrency a bank deposit.
Crypto is not:
- FDIC insured
- SIPC protected
- bank guaranteed
SoFi Bank's banking status must never be used to imply protection of digital-asset value.
Self-directed investing
Current minimum: $5.
SoFi offers $0 online commissions on eligible stock and ETF trades.
The product includes:
- U.S. stocks
- ETFs
- fractional shares
- mutual funds
- options
- retirement brokerage
- IPO participation
- alternative/private-market investments
Fractional trading is available on eligible securities, with $5 being an important current operational threshold for fractional transactions.
Mutual funds are not universally commission-free
SoFi's current fee disclosures distinguish ordinary mutual funds from interval funds.
Current transaction pricing includes:
| Transaction | Fee |
|---|---|
| Ordinary mutual fund purchase | 0.20%, capped at $20 per transaction |
| Interval fund purchase | 2.00% |
That distinction belongs in the review because a platform advertised around commission-free stock trading can still impose meaningful transaction costs on other investment structures.
Interval-fund fee example
If the current 2% transaction fee applies:
- $500 purchase → $10
- $2,500 purchase → $50
- $10,000 purchase → $200
This is a transaction-cost illustration only. It does not include a fund's internal expenses.
Inactivity fee
SoFi states that an inactivity fee may apply when the customer does not log into the account for at least six months.
A login is sufficient to avoid the inactivity condition; trading is not required.
Options
SoFi supports options trading in eligible self-directed brokerage accounts, including eligible self-directed IRAs.
Headline commission: $0 base options commission.
Exchange, regulatory and other contract-related charges can still apply.
Options trading is not literally costless.
Robo Investing
Current SoFi Robo Investing:
- Provider: SoFi Wealth LLC
- Minimum: $50
- Annual advisory fee: 0.25%
- Automatic rebalancing: yes
Available account types include:
- individual taxable brokerage
- Traditional IRA
- Roth IRA
- SEP IRA
SoFi's robo-advisor monitors portfolios and rebalances as needed.
Fund expenses remain separate from the advisory fee.
Robo fee math
At 0.25% annually:
| Balance | Illustrative annual advisory fee |
|---|---|
| $1,000 | $2.50 |
| $10,000 | $25 |
| $50,000 | $125 |
| $100,000 | $250 |
| $250,000 | $625 |
These figures illustrate the advisory fee only.
They exclude ETF/fund expenses and other applicable account costs.
Human financial planning
SoFi offers access to financial planners as part of its broader member ecosystem.
Not every Robo Investing account receives continuous individualized portfolio management from a human CFP.
The robo product remains automated.
A complimentary planning session is different from an ongoing human-managed advisory relationship.
Retirement accounts
SoFi currently supports:
- Traditional IRA
- Roth IRA
- Rollover IRA
- SEP IRA
Self-directed and automated management styles are available for applicable IRA types.
Current SoFi materials also describe a 1% match on eligible IRA contributions and qualifying rollovers, subject to holding and promotional terms.
The match is a dated current feature, not an investment return.
Direct cryptocurrency
Direct crypto is now a distinct SoFi Bank product.
Current supported asset count: 28, as of 2026-09-04.
Current examples include:
- BTC
- ETH
- XRP
- SOL
- USDC
- DOGE
- ADA
- LINK
- AVAX
- LTC
- additional supported assets
SoFi now uses a volume-tiered crypto trading fee. As of September 9, 2026, the published tiers range from 1.90% for monthly crypto buy/sell volume below $1,000 to 0.90% at $10,000 or more. The applicable trading fee is built into the displayed price.
The quoted execution price can also differ due to market movement/spread mechanics.
The stated trading fee is not necessarily the only execution cost. SoFi says orders entered by crypto amount may also include a spread of up to 0.10%, with the trading fee and any spread shown on the Review screen before the order is placed.
Crypto deposits are $0 from SoFi, although blockchain network costs can be borne elsewhere in the transaction.
SoFiUSD is not a bank deposit
SoFi's payment stablecoin should be treated separately from ordinary checking/savings balances.
SOFID/SOFIUSD is not FDIC insured.
Its intended 1:1 relationship with the dollar does not eliminate:
- blockchain risk
- redemption risk
- operational risk
- loss risk
IPO access
SoFi Securities gives eligible self-directed investors access to available IPO allocations.
There is no guarantee an indication of interest results in shares.
High-demand offerings can produce:
- no allocation
- partial allocation
- smaller-than-requested allocations
IPO access is not guaranteed.
Private markets have become material
SoFi now provides several private-market routes.
Current exposure can include:
- venture capital
- private equity
- private credit
- real estate/real assets
- alternative asset managers
- private companies
- interval/registered alternative funds
- SPVs
Two different access models must be distinguished.
Templum private offerings
SoFi Securities has a referral arrangement with Templum Markets.
Certain private-company SPVs and funds require accredited-investor qualification.
Current disclosed purchase fees can be as high as:
- Templum SPV purchase fee: up to 6%
- Templum fund purchase fee: up to 3.5%
Templum can pay SoFi a percentage of the fee charged to the referred investor, creating a disclosed referral conflict.
That materially changes the economics.
New 2026 fund access
Current 2026 additions include funds associated with CAZ Investments and AngelList Asset Management.
Examples include:
- CAZ GP Stakes Fund
- CAZ Strategic Opportunities Fund
- USVC Venture Capital Access Fund
Current stated minimums:
- USVC minimum: $500
- CAZ fund minimum: $2,500
Those minimums are specific to those funds and do not generalize to every SoFi private-market investment.
Some private funds intend to provide periodic limited repurchase opportunities.
That is not daily liquidity and is not guaranteed.
Investor protection
Securities brokerage
SoFi Securities is a FINRA/SIPC broker-dealer.
SIPC does not protect against market losses.
Robo accounts
Securities custody follows the brokerage/custody structure; advisory registration does not guarantee portfolio performance.
Crypto
No SIPC.
No FDIC insurance on digital-asset value.
Private investments
No FDIC protection and no guarantee against loss.
Some private investments may be highly illiquid and capable of total loss.
SoFi assessment
SoFi's strongest differentiator is breadth.
It can now cover:
- self-directed brokerage
- retirement
- robo investing
- direct crypto
- IPOs
- private markets
inside one consumer ecosystem.
That breadth also means the investor must pay attention to which SoFi entity is providing each product.
The conventional brokerage may be inexpensive. The robo service charges 0.25%. Crypto uses a volume-tiered trading-fee schedule, with the applicable rate depending on qualifying monthly trading volume. Some private-market access can carry purchase fees of several percentage points.
"SoFi Invest is low cost" is therefore too broad a conclusion.
Cost depends heavily on which part of the platform is being used.
