Overview

Ally Invest combines a conventional self-directed brokerage with automated portfolios and broader Ally banking integration.

Current investment products include:

  • stocks;
  • ETFs;
  • options;
  • mutual funds;
  • bonds and Treasuries;
  • CDs;
  • margin;
  • IRAs;
  • fully paid securities lending;
  • Robo Portfolios;
  • Personal Advice.

The self-directed brokerage and the advisory products use affiliated but different regulated roles.

May fit better for

  • Ally Bank customers;
  • investors who want $0 stock/ETF commissions;
  • options traders attracted to a $0.50 contract fee;
  • mutual-fund investors who want no-load funds with $0 purchase/sale transaction fees;
  • IRA investors;
  • investors considering low-minimum automated portfolios;
  • investors comfortable with Apex as clearing firm.

May fit less well for

  • direct crypto investors;
  • futures traders;
  • investors who keep large idle cash balances in a self-directed account expecting interest;
  • small-balance margin borrowers;
  • investors who want a very broad institutional trading platform.

  • Exercise fee: $0
  • Assignment fee: $0

Certain index products can add:

  • Selected index product fee: $0.35 per contract

and regulatory fees remain separate.

Example

50 contracts:

50 × $0.50 = $25

ordinary per-contract charge before regulatory or applicable index fees.

---

Mutual funds

Ally currently states:

  • Mutual funds:
  • No load purchase: $0
  • No load sale: $0
  • Available fund: 17,000+

Load funds remain subject to fund-imposed sales charges.

Fund expense ratios remain.

---

  • Bonds and Treasuries:
  • Online: $1 per bond
  • Minimum commission: $10
  • Maximum commission: $250
  • CDs:
  • Transaction fee: $24.95

Ally can act as principal in fixed-income transactions, where compensation can be embedded through markup/markdown.

A principal markup is not the same as a visible commission.

---

Self-directed cash currently earns no interest

Current commissions/fees page states:

  • Self directed free cash interest: No

Specifically, Ally Invest Securities Self-Directed trading-account cash balances do not currently earn interest under the supplied schedule.

This is a material distinction from:

  • Ally Bank savings accounts;
  • Robo Portfolio cash buffers;
  • other brokers' sweep programs.

---

Margin rates

Current margin schedule:

  • Margin:
  • 0 to 9999: 11.25%
  • 10000 to 24999: 11.25%
  • 25000 to 49999: 11.00%
  • 50000 to 99999: 10.25%
  • 100000 to 249999: 9.00%
  • 250000 to 499999: 8.00%
  • 500000 to 999999: 7.50%
  • 1000000 plus: 6.75%
  • Base rate: 5.50%

The page states its rate information is accurate as of December 10, 2025.

Keep an update trigger because rates can change without notice.

---

Margin cost example

Approximate one-year simple-interest reference for a constant $10,000 debit at 11.25%:

$10,000 × 11.25% = $1,125

Actual margin interest is calculated under the account terms and can vary with debit timing/rate changes.

A $0 stock commission is economically insignificant compared with a persistent margin debit at double-digit rates.

---

Robo Portfolios

Ally Invest Advisors Inc. manages the automated-investing program.

Current structure:

  • Robo Portfolios:
  • Adviser: Ally Invest Advisors Inc.
  • Minimum: $100
  • Cash Enhanced:
  • Advisory fee: 0%
  • Target cash buffer: about 30%
  • Market Focused:
  • Advisory fee: 0.30%
  • Target market investment: about 98%
  • Target cash: about 2%

Ally Invest Advisors is an SEC-registered investment adviser.

Accounts are offered through Ally Invest Securities and cleared through Apex.

---

Cash-Enhanced tradeoff

A 0% advisory fee is not the same as:

"no economic cost."

The Cash-Enhanced Robo Portfolio deliberately keeps about 30% in interest-earning cash.

That can:

  • dampen volatility;
  • provide liquidity;
  • reduce market exposure;
  • create performance drag during strong markets.

---

Market-Focused fee example

On $50,000:

$50,000 × 0.30% = $150

approximate annual advisory fee before ETF expenses and balance changes.

The portfolio remains mostly invested rather than holding the 30% cash allocation used by Cash-Enhanced.

---

IRAs

Current fee schedule:

  • IRA:
  • Annual fee: $0
  • Transfer fee: $50
  • Closure fee: $25

Current investment/account pages support retirement accounts through Ally Invest.

---

ACAT and wires

Current service-fee disclosures show:

  • ACAT transfer out full or partial: $50
  • Outgoing domestic wire: $30

These matter to customers who leave the platform or frequently move money externally.

---

Securities Income Program

Ally offers a fully paid securities-lending program facilitated by Apex.

Current eligibility requires a cash, non-margin account and at least one listed criterion, such as:

  • net worth of at least $100,000;
  • account value greater than $50,000;
  • annual income greater than $50,000;
  • more than five years of trading experience.

Participation can change tax and voting economics on loaned securities.

---

Direct crypto and futures status

The current Ally Self-Directed product registry supplied here includes:

  • stocks;
  • ETFs;
  • options;
  • mutual funds;
  • fixed income.

It does not establish a direct spot-crypto or futures account.

---

SIPC / FDIC distinction

  • Ally Invest Securities SIPC: Yes
  • Apex SIPC: Yes
  • Self directed securities market loss insurance: No
  • Ally Bank FDIC should not be applied to securities: Yes

Securities products are not FDIC-insured bank deposits.

The shared Ally brand does not make brokerage securities bank deposits.

Assessment

Ally Invest's pricing is strongest in two places:

  • $0.50 option contracts;
  • $0 no-load mutual-fund purchase and sale transaction fees.

The self-directed cash policy is a weakness for investors who leave large balances uninvested because the supplied current fee page states that idle self-directed cash does not earn interest.

Robo pricing has an important tradeoff.

The Cash-Enhanced version avoids an advisory fee by keeping roughly 30% in cash.

The Market-Focused version charges 0.30% while keeping roughly 98% invested.

That is a portfolio-design decision, not merely a fee decision.

The protection distinction remains standard:

Ally Bank deposits and Ally Invest securities are different products under different protection regimes.
