Overview
DBMF is an actively managed ETF designed to provide liquid exposure to the return drivers of leading managed-futures hedge funds.
Current structure:
- Ticker: DBMF
- Registered ETF: Yes
- Adviser: iM Global Partner
- Subadviser: Dynamic Beta investments
- Expense ratio: 0.85%
- Inception: 2019-05-07
May fit better for
- investors seeking managed futures in an ETF;
- portfolios wanting diversified CTA-style exposure without selecting one CTA;
- investors comfortable with model-based replication;
- investors seeking long/short exposure across major asset classes;
- users who prefer no direct private-fund subscription;
- investors who can tolerate leverage and model risk.
May fit less well for
- investors who want to own the underlying CTA hedge funds directly;
- users who expect exact daily replication of the SG CTA universe;
- investors uncomfortable with derivatives;
- users who interpret a liquid ETF as low risk;
- investors who require exposure to crypto futures;
- users who treat third-party Morningstar stars as ROIStreet ratings.
DBMF uses active replication rather than direct CTA ownership
Current 2026 prospectus:
- Direct investment in target CTA funds: No
- Replication model: Dynamic Beta Engine
- Target: selected pool of large managed-futures hedge fund managers
- Model lookback: trailing 60-day performance
The model attempts to infer the major exposures driving the target managers' recent returns.
DBMF then uses liquid derivatives to approximate those exposures.
The fund trades across four major asset classes
Current prospectus:
- Equities: Yes
- Fixed income: Yes
- Currencies: Yes
- Commodities: Yes
- Long positions: Yes
- Short positions: Yes
Primary derivative types include:
- futures;
- forward contracts.
Current annual fund operating expenses are 0.85%
Current April 30, 2026 summary prospectus:
- Management fee: 0.85%
- 12b1 fee current: 0%
- Other expenses: 0%
- Total annual fund operating expenses: 0.85%
The 12b-1 plan is authorized but inactive.
DBMF targets an 8%-10% annualized volatility range
Current prospectus:
- Target volatility: 8%-10% annualized
- Guaranteed volatility range: No
The target is a portfolio-management objective, not a loss limit.
Realized volatility can differ.
Cayman exposure is capped at 20%
Current prospectus:
- Cayman subsidiary: Yes
- Maximum total assets in subsidiary: 20%
The subsidiary is used primarily for commodity exposure.
It is not registered under the 1940 Act in the same way as the parent ETF, although it follows specified fund policies.
DBMF does not currently invest in cryptocurrency
Current 2026 prospectus:
- Cryptocurrency: No
- Digital asset derivatives: No
Gross notional exposure can be materially larger than NAV
Current prospectus explicitly allows gross notional exposure that approximates the CTA target's risk profile.
ETF liquidity and derivatives liquidity are different
DBMF shares trade intraday.
The portfolio still carries:
- futures liquidity risk;
- forward-counterparty risk;
- leverage risk;
- model/data risk;
- cash-redemption tax risk;
- subsidiary risk.
ETF trading volume does not erase those risks.
Current fund scale is multi-billion dollars
Current first-party June 2026 pages showed approximately $3.9B-$4.0B in net assets.
Assessment
DBMF's strongest feature is also the main thing a review can misunderstand.
It does not select one CTA and it does not hold the leading managed-futures hedge funds.
It uses a quantitative engine to estimate the major exposures behind a representative CTA group and expresses those exposures through liquid futures and forwards.
That creates a lower-cost ETF structure, but also introduces model and replication risk.
