NinjaTrader: Platform Profile
We may earn a commission if you open an account through links on this page. Our editorial analysis is independent and is never influenced by commercial partnerships. Full disclosure.
NinjaTrader is a specialist futures brokerage and trading-platform ecosystem.
It was founded in 2003 and has spent more than two decades building around futures, charting, simulation, advanced order entry, strategy automation and third-party add-ons.
The biggest structural change is ownership. Kraken parent Payward completed its acquisition of NinjaTrader on May 1, 2025. NinjaTrader continues to operate as a distinct futures platform, but it now sits inside Kraken's broader multi-asset organization.
Its 2026 product scope has also expanded into single-stock futures, event contracts and leveraged spot digital-asset transactions under applicable programs. That does not make it a conventional stock brokerage or crypto exchange.
May fit better for
- active futures traders
- micro-futures traders
- systematic traders using C#
- traders wanting simulation
- futures traders wanting low intraday margin requirements
- traders wanting desktop customization
May fit less well for
- passive stock/ETF investors
- retirement investors seeking mutual funds
- investors uncomfortable with leverage
- traders who do not need futures-specific tools
- users expecting SIPC securities-account protection
Current ownership
Kraken/Payward completed its acquisition of NinjaTrader on May 1, 2025. Current regulatory disclosure states the ultimate parent is Payward, Inc. d/b/a Kraken and the direct parent is NinjaTrader Group, LLC, which owns the NinjaTrader entities.
Older language describing Long Ridge Equity Partners as the current controlling owner no longer applies.
Entity separation
NinjaTrader, LLC is the software company. It develops and supports the proprietary NinjaTrader platform.
NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC (NFA ID 0309379) is a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant and NFA member. Current DBAs include NinjaTrader, Kraken Derivatives US and Tradovate. NinjaTrader Clearing provides brokerage and clearing services; the software company is not the FCM.
Current brokerage pricing
NinjaTrader currently offers three pricing approaches.
Free — $0 subscription, $0.39 per side on Micro contracts, $1.29 per side on standard contracts.
Monthly — $99/month, $0.29 per side on Micro contracts, $0.99 per side on standard contracts.
Lifetime — $1,499 one-time license, $0.09 per side on Micro contracts, $0.59 per side on standard contracts.
Exchange, clearing and NFA fees are additional, so these are not all-in round-trip costs.
Round-trip commission examples
Before exchange, clearing and NFA fees:
One Micro contract — Free: $0.39 × 2 = $0.78. Monthly: $0.29 × 2 = $0.58. Lifetime: $0.09 × 2 = $0.18.
One standard contract — Free: $1.29 × 2 = $2.58. Monthly: $0.99 × 2 = $1.98. Lifetime: $0.59 × 2 = $1.18.
These examples show why high-volume futures traders may care about the subscription or license choice.
Monthly-plan break-even example
Compare Free vs Monthly on Micro commissions only. The monthly fee is $99 and commission savings are $0.39 − $0.29 = $0.10 per side, or $0.20 per round trip.
Break-even: $99 ÷ $0.20 = 495 Micro round trips per month.
That ignores standard contracts, other benefits, exchange fees, clearing fees and NFA fees. A trader doing 20 round trips per month gets a very different economic result from someone doing hundreds.
No traditional deposit minimum
Current NinjaTrader brokerage advertising states a $0 minimum deposit. ACH and debit funding itself can require a minimum transfer amount.
More importantly, no account-opening deposit minimum is not the same as no capital requirement to trade. The user still needs sufficient margin for the contract.
Intraday margin
Current headline intraday margins start around $50 for Micro contracts and $500 for E-mini contracts.
Margin is not the maximum possible loss. A futures position can lose substantially more than the intraday margin posted. NinjaTrader can increase margins because of volatility, exchange changes, news events or risk controls. A $50 margin requirement does not mean a trader can only lose $50.
Markets
Current NinjaTrader access includes more than 100 futures contracts across major venues including CME Group, Eurex, ICE and Coinbase Derivatives.
Underlying exposures can include equity indexes, interest rates, Treasuries, energy, metals, agriculture, FX and cryptocurrency.
Single-stock futures
NinjaTrader expanded into CME-listed single-stock futures in 2026. The current offering advertises up to roughly 54 single-stock futures underlyings, with examples including Apple, Nvidia, Tesla, Microsoft, Meta and Alphabet.
These are futures contracts, not ordinary shares. Owning a single-stock future does not mean stock ownership, voting rights, ordinary cash dividends or SIPC stock custody. Security futures carry leverage risk.
Event contracts
NinjaTrader Clearing currently provides eligible customers access to event contracts. Current regulatory disclosure includes event contracts cleared through the Kalshi structure.
Event contracts can be binary YES/NO contracts, event-based derivatives, and fully collateralized according to applicable contract terms. They are not stocks, and they are not sports-book wagers merely because an event can involve sports or other outcomes.
Current disclosures state the customer can lose the full amount paid for an event contract. Product availability is contract- and jurisdiction-specific.
NinjaTrader has also offered CME event-contract experiences through its futures ecosystem; an older CME event-contract page and current Kalshi access are not one generic fee schedule, and current product-specific terms control.
Leveraged spot digital assets
Current NinjaTrader Clearing disclosures also cover a Spot Digital Asset Margin Program. This involves leveraged spot digital-asset transactions through the applicable CFTC-regulated market structure.
It is not a normal cash crypto wallet, FDIC-insured crypto or SIPC stock custody. Digital asset margin can produce substantial losses.
Platform availability
NinjaTrader offers desktop, web and mobile access. The platform is highly futures-focused, and current functionality includes customizable charts, DOM and order-entry tools, risk controls, account and position monitoring, simulated trading and strategy tools.
Simulation
NinjaTrader provides unlimited simulated trading, with current promotional live market data available for an initial period.
Simulation is useful for platform learning, order testing and strategy rehearsal. It does not reproduce psychological pressure, live queue position, all slippage, liquidity constraints or live execution risk.
NinjaScript
NinjaScript is NinjaTrader's C# development framework. Users can build custom indicators, automated strategies, drawing tools and complete add-ons.
An important limitation: the NinjaScript environment is NinjaTrader 8 desktop, and NinjaScript does not run as the same development environment inside the web trader. That matters for users expecting cloud-first automation.
Third-party ecosystem
NinjaTrader also supports a large ecosystem of indicators, strategies, add-ons, education and development vendors.
A third-party strategy or add-on is not guaranteed to be profitable, secure, compatible forever or free of bugs. Custom automation can magnify errors.
Customer funds
As an FCM, NinjaTrader Clearing is subject to CFTC customer-fund segregation rules, and customer futures funds are held in segregated accounts under the applicable regulatory framework.
Segregation does not protect a trader from trading losses, leverage, bad strategy or market gaps. Futures funds are not SIPC-insured securities.
Protection distinctions
NinjaTrader does not provide SIPC securities brokerage protection or FDIC investment protection. It operates under CFTC FCM customer-fund rules as an NFA member. Futures regulatory segregation is not the same protection mechanism as SIPC.
Assessment
NinjaTrader remains one of the most specialized platforms in the ROIStreet review universe. Its strongest proposition is futures.
The platform combines low intraday margins, several commission models, advanced desktop functionality, web and mobile access, simulation, C# automation and broad futures exchange access.
The Kraken acquisition is expanding the product boundary into digital assets, security futures and event contracts, but that should not obscure what NinjaTrader fundamentally is: a leveraged derivatives platform.
A $50 Micro intraday margin is capital-efficient. It is also a reminder that futures leverage can produce losses far larger than the amount initially posted.
