Overview
TCI Fund Management is a London-based investment manager founded by Christopher Hohn in June 2003. The firm's public materials describe a concentrated, long-term, value-oriented approach to global equities, with deep fundamental research, constructive engagement with management and activism when appropriate.
TCI also operates a separate real-estate lending business established in 2014.
May fit better for
- investors seeking concentrated fundamental equity exposure;
- institutions comfortable with activist engagement;
- investors with a long investment horizon;
- allocators able to tolerate significant single-name concentration;
- investors who understand private-fund eligibility and liquidity constraints.
May fit less well for
- retail users seeking public self-service access;
- investors wanting broad index-like diversification;
- users who interpret a large 13F portfolio as total firm AUM;
- investors uncomfortable with activism or concentrated positions;
- users expecting an SEC-registered RIA rather than an exempt reporting adviser.
TCI is a concentrated global equity investor
Current first-party description supports:
- Global equities: Yes
- Value oriented: Yes
- Fundamental: Yes
- Long term horizon: Yes
- Constructive engagement: Yes
- Activism when appropriate: Yes
- Highly concentrated master fund: Yes
The firm describes a private-equity-style research process applied to public companies.
TCI also has a real-estate lending business
Current first-party materials state:
- Real estate lending business: Yes
- Real estate lending established: 2014
- Senior secured lending: Yes
- First mortgage lending: Yes
This is a separate business line from the concentrated public-equity strategy.
U.S. regulatory status is ERA, not registered RIA
Current IAPD status:
- CRD: 269954
- SEC file: 802-102468
- SEC ERA active: Yes
- SEC ERA effective date: 2015-07-20
- SEC registered RIA: No
The SEC's own IAPD page states that TCI is not currently registered and files as an exempt reporting adviser.
TCI's website separately states:
- FCA authorized and regulated: Yes
- UK company number: 08898250
Current Q2 2026 13F value is $52.770B
TCI's Form 13F for June 30, 2026 reports:
- Q2 2026 13F value: $52.770B
- Q2 2026 13F as of: 2026-06-30
- Q2 2026 13F entry count: 11
The Q1 2026 filing contained 10 entries and a lower total value.
A concentrated 13F can be highly informative about listed U.S.-reportable holdings while still not representing the complete economic portfolio.
Older Form-ADV-derived private-fund data must retain its source date
AUMdb's current profile reproduces a private-fund schedule sourced from a June 2024 filing.
That older schedule includes:
- Historical private fund schedule date: 2024-06
- Historical Children Investment Master Fund gross assets: $57.2B
- Historical Children Investment Master Fund minimum: $5M
- Historical total private fund gross assets: $64.1B
These figures are useful for understanding vehicle structure, not for establishing current September 2026 fund size or access.
ESG engagement is part of the public investment process
TCI's stewardship and ESG disclosures describe climate-risk analysis, emissions disclosure expectations, voting policies and engagement with portfolio companies.
The existence of an ESG policy does not imply a dedicated ESG fund or guarantee investment results.
Assessment
TCI is unusually easy to mislabel because its public stature and large 13F portfolio can make it look like a conventional U.S.-registered hedge-fund adviser.
It is not. The U.S. IAPD status is active exempt reporting adviser. Its FCA authorization is a separate fact.
The second trap is asset measurement. A $52.770B Q2 13F and an older $57.2B master-fund gross-asset figure are not interchangeable with current managerwide AUM.
