Overview

Firstrade has a simpler proposition than many newer app-based brokers.

It is a traditional self-directed securities brokerage with unusually broad zero-commission pricing across:

  • stocks;
  • ETFs;
  • options;
  • mutual funds.

The most distinctive price is not $0 stock trading.

That is now common.

The unusual feature is:

  • Options contract fee: $0

Combined with $0 online option commission and $0 exercise/assignment fees, Firstrade can be materially cheaper than brokers that charge $0.65 per contract.

Firstrade also supports:

  • mutual funds;
  • fixed income;
  • margin;
  • retirement accounts;
  • fractional shares;
  • dividend reinvestment;
  • securities lending;
  • extended and overnight stock trading.

May fit better for

  • long-term investors who want stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, and fixed income in one broker;
  • option traders sensitive to per-contract fees;
  • investors who want IRAs;
  • users who value a straightforward commission schedule;
  • investors who want overnight U.S.-equity sessions where eligible;
  • users who do not need an institution-style trading workstation.

May fit less well for

  • investors who need futures;
  • investors who need an integrated current crypto product;
  • margin borrowers at smaller balances;
  • traders who want the broadest API/algo infrastructure;
  • users who interpret $0 commissions as meaning every account service is free.

Regulatory identity

Current regulatory state:

  • Legal name: Firstrade Securities Inc.
  • SEC number: 8-34642
  • FINRA CRD: 16843
  • SEC registered broker dealer: Yes
  • FINRA member: Yes
  • SIPC member: Yes

Firstrade is a self-directed broker.

Its Form CRS does not turn account access or educational material into individualized investment advice.

---

Clearing relationship

Current Form CRS identifies:

  • Clearing firm: Apex Clearing Corporation

Apex carries customer accounts and provides clearing infrastructure.

---

Current online trading prices

Current pricing:

  • Stocks:
  • Commission: $0
  • ETFs:
  • Commission: $0
  • Options:
  • Commission: $0
  • Contract fee: $0
  • Exercise fee: $0
  • Assignment fee: $0
  • Mutual funds:
  • Load fund online trade: $0
  • No load online trade: $0
  • NTF online trade: $0

This is a broader zero-commission lineup than brokers that still charge transaction fees on some mutual funds or option contracts.

It does not eliminate every product-specific fee.

---

Mutual-fund redemption fees still matter

Current schedule states:

  • Mutual fund short term redemption:
  • Holding period: <90 days
  • Fee: $19.95

Other broker-assisted mutual-fund transactions can also carry charges.

Therefore:

"$0 mutual funds" means current online transaction pricing under the listed categories—not that every mutual-fund action is free.

Fund-level expenses also remain.

---

Broker-assisted trades

Current broker-assisted pricing includes:

  • Broker assisted:
  • Stocks ETFs: $19.95
  • Options: $19.95 + $0.50 per contract
  • No load mutual funds: $19.95

The $0 headline price is primarily the self-directed online price.

Investors who regularly require representative-assisted execution face a different cost structure.

---

Regulatory transaction fees

Current pricing page, fact-checked September 4, 2026, states:

  • SEC sell fee:
  • Effective date: 2026-04-06
  • Rate: $0.00002060 per dollar sold
  • Options regulatory fee:
  • Effective date: 2026-07-01
  • Rate: $0.02 per contract

These are regulatory/pass-through charges rather than Firstrade's base online commission.

They can change with regulator or exchange schedules.

---

Margin rates

Firstrade's current margin page still uses a base rate of 11%, effective December 11, 2025.

Current published tiers:

  • Margin rates:
  • "$0-$24,999": 12.00%
  • "$25,000-$49,999": 11.75%
  • "$50,000-$99,999": 11.25%
  • "$100,000-$249,999": 10.75%
  • "$250,000-$499,999": 10.50%
  • "$500,000-$999,999": 8.60%
  • "$1,000,000+": 8.00%

This schedule shows why "$0 commission" should not dominate a brokerage cost comparison.

For an investor borrowing $20,000 at a 12% annual rate, an approximate one-year interest reference before daily compounding/timing effects is:

$20,000 × 12% = $2,400

The economics of margin can overwhelm small commission differences.

---

Extended and overnight trading

Current Firstrade options/trading materials state:

  • Extended hours:
  • Daytime extended session: 7:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. ET Monday–Friday
  • Overnight session: 8:00 p.m.–4:00 a.m. ET Sunday–Friday

Extended-hours trading involves different market conditions from normal sessions.

Potential differences include:

  • thinner liquidity;
  • wider spreads;
  • fewer counterparties;
  • more price volatility;
  • venue limitations.

---

New 2026 intraday margin framework

Firstrade announced support for FINRA's new intraday margin framework effective June 4, 2026.

Current company announcement states:

  • Intraday margin 2026:
  • Effective date: 2026-06-04
  • Day trade count limit: no legacy fixed number-of-day-trades limit under the new framework
  • Minimum day trade equity: $2,000
  • Real time buying power: Yes

The actual account can still be subject to:

  • house requirements;
  • strategy-specific requirements;
  • concentration;
  • option rules;
  • risk controls.

---

Fractional shares

Current Firstrade Form CRS identifies fractional-share execution through Apex-related infrastructure.

Fractional shares can differ from whole shares in:

  • transferability;
  • voting;
  • corporate actions;
  • execution.

---

Retirement accounts

Firstrade supports retirement-account structures including conventional IRAs.

This is an important distinction from eToro's current U.S. brokerage, which states that it does not offer retirement accounts.

Use the active account registry rather than inventing a self-directed-alternative-IRA category.

Do not assign Firstrade to ROIStreet's Self-Directed IRAs category merely because it offers conventional brokerage IRAs.

That ROIStreet category is reserved for alternative-asset SDIRA providers.

---

Fixed income

Current lineup includes:

  • Treasury bills, notes, and bonds;
  • municipal bonds;
  • agency bonds;
  • corporate bonds;
  • zero-coupon bonds/STRIPS;
  • CDs.

Current pricing often uses net yield basis.

That means Firstrade can act as principal and compensation can be reflected through markup or markdown rather than a visible commission.

---

Service fees

Current special-services schedule includes:

  • Outgoing wire domestic: $25
  • Outgoing wire foreign: $25
  • ACAT transfer out: $75
  • Partial ACAT transfer out: $55
  • DRIP: $0
  • Periodic investment plan: $0

The relevant cost depends heavily on how the account is used.

---

Current crypto status

The current product pages fact-checked for this package center on:

  • stocks;
  • ETFs;
  • options;
  • mutual funds;
  • fixed income;
  • margin;
  • brokerage services.

Assessment

Firstrade's strongest pricing advantage is options.

A trader placing 100 contracts at a broker charging $0.65 per contract would pay:

100 × $0.65 = $65

in contract fees before regulatory charges.

At Firstrade's current $0 contract fee:

100 × $0 = $0

in the brokerage contract fee.

That difference is material for high-contract-count strategies.

The tradeoff appears elsewhere.

Margin rates remain high for smaller debit balances.

Broker-assisted trades cost extra.

Account transfers and wires have fees.

Firstrade is therefore most compelling for self-directed investors who use the products where its pricing is genuinely unusual:

  • options;
  • online mutual funds;
  • broad traditional brokerage access.
