Overview
Goldmoney is a physical precious-metals platform, not a securities brokerage.
Customers can buy, sell and store:
- gold;
- silver;
- platinum;
- palladium.
The current product is built around allocated professional vaulting rather than immediate home delivery.
A Goldmoney customer owns physical metal held through the custody structure. Depending on the form of holding, that can be:
- an undivided ownership interest in allocated unregistered bars; or
- a specifically registered bar identified to that customer.
That is economically different from buying:
- a gold ETF;
- a mining stock;
- a futures contract;
- a bank deposit;
- an unallocated dealer claim.
The biggest practical issue is not the 0.5% trading fee.
For smaller accounts, it is the $10 minimum monthly storage fee.
May fit better for
- investors who specifically want legal ownership of physical bullion;
- investors who prefer professional vaulting to home storage;
- investors seeking gold, silver, platinum and palladium in one platform;
- investors who want the option to register specific bars;
- investors willing to pay recurring custody costs;
- U.S. investors who may use an IRA through an outside partner where eligible.
May fit less well for
- small balances sensitive to fixed storage minimums;
- investors who want an ETF-like expense ratio without withdrawal logistics;
- users requiring SIPC protection for bullion value;
- investors who want instant physical possession;
- investors unwilling to use bank wires;
- users who assume "fully insured" means metal prices cannot fall.
---
Goldmoney is a public company; the customer asset is still physical bullion
Current Goldmoney materials identify the company as publicly listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under:
- Ticker: XAU
That corporate listing does not turn customer bullion into Goldmoney stock.
Store separately:
- Goldmoney company publicly listed: Yes
- Customer holding is company stock: No
- Customer holding is physical metal: Yes
---
Clients have legal ownership of the stored metal
Goldmoney's ownership documentation states that customers have full legal ownership and title to stored precious metals under bailment law.
Goldmoney acts as an agent arranging physical custody with professional vault operators.
The company states that client metal is maintained at a one-to-one ratio with recorded holdings and is not recorded as Goldmoney's own balance-sheet metal.
This structure reduces one form of dealer counterparty exposure.
It does not eliminate:
- metal-price risk;
- operational risk;
- vault risk beyond insurance terms;
- legal/tax risk;
- liquidity/spread risk.
---
Undivided metal is still allocated ownership
A customer does not need to register an entire bar to own physical metal.
Goldmoney distinguishes:
- Registered bar: specific bar identified as solely owned by one client
- Unregistered metal: undivided ownership interest in allocated bars
All metal is described as held in allocated form.
That would confuse two different concepts.
---
Registered bars are required for physical possession
Current February 10, 2026 support states that bar registration is required to take physical possession through collection or delivery.
Available registration formats can include, subject to vault inventory:
- 100g gold;
- 1kg gold;
- 1kg silver;
- Good Delivery gold;
- Good Delivery silver;
- Good Delivery platinum;
- Good Delivery palladium.
Registration itself has a metal-denominated fee under the current fee schedule.
Physical withdrawal also adds:
- vault handling;
- administration;
- shipping/collection arrangements;
- potential taxes such as VAT where applicable.
---
Current trading fee is 0.5% each way
Goldmoney's current public pricing page states:
- Buy fee: 0.50%
- Sell fee: 0.50%
A simplified round trip, ignoring price movement, storage, currency effects and transfer charges:
0.50% + 0.50% = 1.00%
On $10,000 of metal:
- simplified buy fee: $50;
- simplified sell fee on the same $10,000 notional: $50;
- simplified transaction-fee total: $100.
Actual proceeds depend on metal prices and quoted transaction values.
---
Current headline storage rates
Goldmoney's current public pricing page states annual storage rates of:
- Gold: 0.25%
- Silver: 0.50%
- Platinum: 0.25%
- Palladium: 0.25%
The platform also imposes:
- Minimum storage fee: $10 per month
- Minimum storage fee applies to: any Holding with a balance
That fixed minimum can dominate the percentage rate for a smaller account.
---
Small-balance storage math matters more than the headline percentage
$1,000 gold balance
Headline 0.25% annual percentage:
$1,000 × 0.25% = $2.50/year
But the minimum fee is:
$10 × 12 = $120/year
Simplified effective annual storage cost:
$120 ÷ $1,000 = 12%
That is before any buy/sell fee or market movement.
$100,000 gold balance
Headline storage:
$100,000 × 0.25% = $250/year
That exceeds the $120 annualized minimum, so the percentage fee—not the minimum—drives this simplified example.
The minimum monthly storage charge is therefore a critical suitability issue for small Goldmoney accounts.
---
Storage fees can reduce the metal quantity
Current support states that storage fees are deducted directly from a Holding.
The customer can choose:
- metal balance; or
- currency balance.
If a chosen currency balance is insufficient, the platform can move through other currency balances and then metal under its stated payment order.
Goldmoney states that the metal is not "sold" for the fee; the fee quantity is deducted from the metal balance.
Economically, the customer's ounces/grams can still decline.
---
There is no current minimum metal order amount
Current support states:
- Minimum metal order: 0
Goldmoney says customers can buy or sell as much or as little metal as they want, subject to limits on the amount available at a confirmed quoted price.
That does not mean a tiny account is economical.
The $10 monthly storage minimum can make a small nominal purchase expensive to hold.
---
Vault locations are global
Current Goldmoney materials identify secure, insured vaults in jurisdictions including:
- Canada;
- Hong Kong;
- Singapore;
- Switzerland;
- United Kingdom;
- United States.
Vault operators referenced include:
- Loomis;
- Brink's;
- Rhenus;
- Royal Canadian Mint.
Vault availability depends on metal and account circumstances.
---
U.S. customers are currently accepted
Current application support includes the United States among jurisdictions from which residents can apply for a Holding.
Goldmoney's public materials also reference U.S. IRA access through an outside partner, Entrust.
---
Insurance is not investment protection
Goldmoney describes client bullion as stored in insured professional vaults.
That insurance relates to covered custody/physical-loss risks under the applicable policies.
It does not insure against:
- gold falling 20%;
- silver falling 40%;
- widening bid/ask economics;
- storage fees;
- taxes;
- an unfavorable currency move;
- losses from selling at a lower market price.
---
Assessment
Goldmoney's core structure is stronger than the generic phrase "digital gold" suggests because clients have legal ownership of allocated physical metal rather than merely an unsecured promise from a dealer.
The cost structure is where the decision changes.
For a large balance, the published annual percentages can be competitive with specialized physical custody.
For a small balance, the $10 monthly minimum can overwhelm the percentage schedule.
The correct comparison is therefore not just:
Goldmoney 0.25% vs. ETF expense ratio.
It is:
- account size;
- $10 monthly minimum;
- 0.5% buy fee;
- 0.5% sell fee;
- vault/currency choice;
- withdrawal costs;
- whether physical delivery matters;
- tax treatment;
- whether direct bullion ownership is worth the additional logistics.
