Overview

WellsTrade is Wells Fargo's self-directed brokerage platform, offered through Wells Fargo Clearing Services, LLC.

Its current product set includes:

  • U.S.-listed stocks;
  • ETFs;
  • mutual funds;
  • options;
  • Treasury securities;
  • corporate and municipal bonds;
  • brokered CDs;
  • margin;
  • taxable brokerage accounts;
  • Traditional, Roth, SEP, and inherited IRAs;
  • education and custodial accounts;
  • trust and business accounts.

The platform's strongest practical advantage is integration with a broader Wells Fargo relationship.

Its main limitation is that many fixed-income transactions and service requests still use an agent rather than a purely self-service workflow.

May fit better for

  • existing Wells Fargo customers;
  • investors who want stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, options, and bonds in one account;
  • IRA investors;
  • investors who value bank and brokerage visibility in the same ecosystem;
  • Treasury buyers;
  • users who do not need specialized active-trader software.

May fit less well for

  • futures traders;
  • direct-crypto traders;
  • very active options traders searching for a contract fee below $0.65;
  • investors who want every fixed-income trade to be self-directed online;
  • margin borrowers with smaller household balances;
  • users who do not benefit from Wells Fargo relationship integration.

Regulatory identity

Current BrokerCheck:

  • Legal name: Wells Fargo Clearing Services, LLC
  • FINRA CRD: 19616
  • SEC number: 8-37180
  • FINRA member: Yes
  • SIPC member: Yes
  • Investment adviser registration: Yes

---

Account minimum

Current WellsTrade opening page states:

  • Account opening minimum: $0

Certain products, funds, margin privileges, and fixed-income securities can still have their own minimums.

A $0 brokerage-opening minimum is not a promise that every investment can be purchased with $0 or $1.

---

Stocks and ETFs

Current online pricing:

  • Stocks:
  • Online commission: $0
  • Automated phone commission: $0
  • ETFs:
  • Online commission: $0
  • Automated phone commission: $0
  • Agent assisted stock ETF:
  • Commission: $25

The $0 online price does not eliminate:

  • regulatory fees;
  • fund expenses;
  • special handling charges;
  • agent-assisted charges;
  • transfer and account-service fees.

---

Options

Current options pricing:

  • Options:
  • Online base commission: $0
  • Contract fee: $0.65
  • Automated phone base: $0
  • Automated phone contract fee: $0.65
  • Agent assisted options:
  • Base: $25
  • Contract fee: $0.65
  • Exercise assignment:
  • Fee: $25 per transaction

Options approval is separate from ordinary stock-trading access.

---

Options fee example

20 contracts placed online:

20 × $0.65 = $13.00

current contract-fee component.

An agent-assisted 20-contract transaction under the current schedule:

$25 + (20 × $0.65) = $38.00

before regulatory or exchange charges.

---

Mutual funds

Current WellsTrade schedule distinguishes:

  • Mutual funds:
  • No load NTF online: $0
  • No load transaction fee fund online: $35

Fund-level expenses remain.

No-transaction-fee status does not mean a mutual fund has no expense ratio or other fund charges.

---

Treasury securities

Current pricing includes:

  • Treasury auctions:
  • Bills notes bonds: $0 per transaction

That is materially different from certain other fixed-income products.

---

Secondary fixed income

Current pricing for many secondary-market bonds:

  • Secondary fixed income:
  • Maturity 9 months or more: $1 per bond
  • Shorter maturity: less than $1 per bond
  • Maximum transaction charge: $250

Fixed income is generally handled through an agent.

The fee schedule states no separate agent-assisted trade fee is added to the fixed-income transaction price.

---

New issues and CDs

Current pricing states that new-issue CDs and retail notes can include compensation in the form of a selling concession.

That means:

  • New issue CD visible transaction fee: not necessarily separately itemized
  • Selling concession possible: Yes

---

Margin current as of May 13, 2026

Current published WellsTrade margin schedule is relationship-sensitive.

Reference benchmark:

  • WSJ Prime:
  • Date: 2026-05-13
  • Rate: 6.75%

Current total margin rates by household relationship tier:

  • Margin:
  • Under 250000: 10.75%
  • 250000 to 499999: 9.75%
  • 500000 to 999999: 7.75%
  • 1000000 to 2499999: 7.25%
  • 2500000 to 4999999: 6.75%
  • 5000000 plus: 6.25%
  • Margin balance 10m plus discount: additional 0.25 percentage point
  • Lowest reference with 10m plus balance: 6.00%

Rates can change with benchmark and relationship balances.

---

Margin account minimum

Current WellsTrade margin page states:

  • Margin minimum:
  • Cash: $2,000
  • Securities: generally twice that amount in fully paid eligible securities

Margin approval and maintenance requirements still apply.

---

Margin example

A constant $20,000 debit in the smallest relationship tier at 10.75%:

$20,000 × 10.75% = $2,150

simple one-year reference.

Actual interest follows daily debit balances and current rates.

The economic effect of margin can be much larger than a $0 stock commission.

---

Cash-account debit rate

Current fee page also publishes an unpaid cash-account disclosures show:

  • Unpaid cash account rate: 12.50%

This is not the same as the ordinary margin schedule.

---

Account types

Current WellsTrade account lineup includes:

  • Taxable:
  • Individual
  • Joint
  • Trust
  • Business
  • Custodial
  • Retirement:
  • Traditional IRA
  • Roth IRA
  • SEP IRA
  • Inherited IRA
  • Education:
  • Coverdell ESA
  • Qualified retirement plan support: Yes

These are conventional brokerage retirement accounts.

---

Transfer and retirement termination fees

Current schedule:

  • Outgoing account transfer: $49.95
  • IRA termination: $49.95

Waiver conditions can apply to certain IRA distributions/terminations.

---

Wire fees

Current schedule distinguishes:

  • Advisor initiated domestic wire: $30
  • Advisor initiated international wire: $40
  • Customer online wire: $0 subject to applicable limits

The method used matters.

---

Cash sweep and bank distinction

WellsTrade provides cash-management/sweep functionality.

Wells Fargo Bank deposits and WellsTrade investment securities are different products.

"WellsTrade investments are FDIC insured."

---

Direct crypto and futures

Current WellsTrade package does not establish:

  • Direct spot crypto current verified: No
  • Retail futures current verified: No

Crypto-related ETFs or securities, where available, are not the same as a direct crypto account.

---

SIPC

Wells Fargo Clearing Services is a SIPC member.

  • SIPC member: Yes
  • Market loss protection: No

SIPC does not protect against declines in the value of stocks, bonds, options, funds, or other investments.

Assessment

WellsTrade is a conventional full-line self-directed brokerage with strong Wells Fargo integration.

Its online stock and ETF pricing is competitive at $0.

Options remain $0.65 per contract.

Treasury auctions are currently $0.

The economics become less attractive where an investor relies heavily on:

  • agent-assisted trading;
  • transaction-fee mutual funds;
  • smaller-balance margin borrowing;
  • transfers out of the platform.

The protection distinction is straightforward:

Wells Fargo Clearing Services provides the brokerage relationship. Wells Fargo Bank provides bank products. Investment securities are not bank deposits.
