Acorns: Platform Profile
We may earn a commission if you open an account through links on this page. Our editorial analysis is independent and is never influenced by commercial partnerships. Full disclosure.
Acorns is best understood as a subscription-based automated investing system rather than a conventional brokerage.
Its core product remains a managed ETF portfolio funded through:
- one-time deposits
- recurring investments
- Round-Ups
- automatic dividend reinvestment
Acorns has expanded, however. Gold subscribers can now add selected individual stocks and ETFs through Custom Portfolios, and the broader subscription can include retirement accounts, custodial accounts and banking features.
That expansion does not turn Acorns into an unrestricted Robinhood-style brokerage.
The defining economic issue remains the flat monthly subscription.
For small balances, that fee can represent a large percentage of invested assets.
May fit better for
- new investors who value automation
- people who respond well to Round-Ups and recurring contributions
- households wanting retirement and kid-investing tools in one subscription
- investors who prefer a simple managed ETF portfolio
- investors who value behavioral automation more than trading control
May fit less well for
- very small account balances sensitive to fixed fees
- investors seeking unrestricted individual-stock trading
- investors seeking tax-loss harvesting
- active options/futures traders
- investors who want sophisticated portfolio tax management

Current subscription pricing
For customers signing up on or after August 17, 2026:
| Tier | Monthly price |
|---|---|
| Bronze | $4/month |
| Silver | $8/month |
| Gold | $12/month |
Grandfathered pricing remains relevant.
Customers who signed up on or before August 16, 2026 may retain Bronze at $3/month and Silver at $6/month.
Gold is $12/month.
$3 and $6 are not the universal current pricing.
Invest
Acorns Invest has no account-opening minimum.
Current practical amount needed to begin investing: $5.
Base portfolios consist primarily of diversified ETFs selected according to the investor's profile.
Core features include:
- automated portfolio recommendation
- recurring contributions
- Round-Ups
- dividend reinvestment
- automatic rebalancing
ETF expenses remain separate from the subscription.
The flat fee matters most at small balances
Current Bronze: $4 × 12 = $48/year
Effective subscription cost relative to Invest balance:
| Invest balance | $48 annual Bronze cost as % |
|---|---|
| $100 | 48.00% |
| $500 | 9.60% |
| $1,000 | 4.80% |
| $2,500 | 1.92% |
| $5,000 | 0.96% |
| $10,000 | 0.48% |
| $25,000 | 0.192% |
This is not an investment expense ratio.
It shows how a fixed subscription interacts with account size.
Silver: $8 × 12 = $96/year
Gold: $12 × 12 = $144/year
A flat fee becomes less significant as the balance grows, but every investor should evaluate the full subscription cost against the features actually used.
No tax-loss harvesting
Current Acorns materials explicitly state that tax-loss harvesting is not provided.
That is a meaningful difference from tax-oriented robo platforms.
Custom Portfolios
Gold subscribers can add selected individual stocks and ETFs.
This is controlled customization, not unrestricted brokerage.
Current rules include:
- Gold subscription required
- investor selects from an available/curated universe
- Custom Portfolio generally may represent 10%–50% of Invest, depending on investor profile
- Base Portfolio remains part of the account
- individual stock/ETF positions can begin around $1
Stated accurately: Gold users can customize part of an otherwise managed Acorns Invest portfolio with selected stocks and ETFs.
Acorns Later
Acorns Later supports:
- Traditional IRA
- Roth IRA
- SEP IRA
The account remains managed rather than self-directed unrestricted brokerage.
Current IRA match:
| Tier | Match |
|---|---|
| Silver | 1% of eligible new contributions during first subscription year |
| Gold | 3% of eligible new contributions during first subscription year |
| Bronze | none |
Current match terms require matched funds to remain in Later for four years to fully retain the match, subject to the program terms.
A match is not investment performance.
Acorns Early
Gold includes access to kid/family investing through Acorns Early/Early Invest under current plan structure.
A custodial investment account and a 529 education plan are not interchangeable.
Banking
Acorns is not a bank.
Current Mighty Oak and Emergency Savings banking services are provided through nbkc bank under current disclosure.
Current published APYs include:
| Product | Rate | As of |
|---|---|---|
| Mighty Oak Checking APY | 2.18% | 2025-12-11 |
| Emergency Savings APY | 3.35% | 2025-12-11 |
These rates are variable.
Every APY must display an as-of date.
Eligible deposits at the partner bank can receive FDIC protection subject to applicable limits.
That FDIC treatment does not extend to Acorns investment accounts.
Protection
Acorns Invest, Later and Early securities accounts are held within the broker-dealer structure and can receive SIPC protection subject to normal SIPC rules.
SIPC:
- can address missing customer securities/cash in a failed brokerage
- does not insure investment performance
- does not protect against market declines
Acorns Banking FDIC coverage is separate.

Acorns assessment
The strongest case for Acorns is behavioral.
Round-Ups, recurring investments and simple managed portfolios can make investing easier to automate.
The weakest case appears when a small account pays a fixed subscription for features it barely uses.
A $500 Bronze balance effectively bears a $48 annual subscription equal to 9.6% of that balance before considering ETF expenses.
That does not mean Acorns takes 9.6% of investment returns. It means flat fees require context.
Gold changes the product meaningfully by adding Custom Portfolios and broader family features, but even Gold does not convert Acorns into a conventional active-trading brokerage.
