eToro: Platform Profile

Overview

eToro's U.S. platform combines three products that should not be treated as one legal account:

  • stocks and ETFs;
  • exchange-listed equity options;
  • cryptocurrency.

The securities business is offered by eToro USA Securities Inc.

Crypto is provided through eToro USA LLC or eToro NY LLC, depending on the customer's state.

The same app also includes eToro's social-investing features, where users can view other investors' activity and use platform tools built around shared portfolio ideas.

The central advantage is convenience.

The central risk in reviewing the platform is assuming that one interface means one regulatory regime.

It does not.

May fit better for

  • investors who want stocks and crypto in one interface;
  • users who value social-market data and investor feeds;
  • investors who use fractional shares;
  • self-directed options traders who want no commission and no per-contract brokerage fee;
  • investors who prefer a relatively simple consumer interface;
  • crypto investors comfortable with a flat 1% buy and 1% sell trading fee.

May fit less well for

  • investors seeking mutual funds;
  • investors seeking bonds through the ordinary eToro brokerage;
  • investors seeking conventional IRA or retirement accounts;
  • options traders who require the deepest institutional-style analytics;
  • active crypto traders who prioritize low order-book maker/taker fees;
  • investors who assume SIPC applies to crypto.

U.S. legal entities

Current eToro U.S. platform documentation identifies:

  • Securities:
  • Entity: eToro USA Securities Inc.
  • SEC registered broker dealer: Yes
  • FINRA member: Yes
  • SIPC member: Yes
  • FINRA CRD: 298361
  • Crypto:
  • Entities:
  • eToro USA LLC
  • eToro NY LLC
  • FinCEN MSB: Yes
  • FINRA member: No
  • SIPC member: No

eToro NY LLC also holds New York money-transmitter and virtual-currency licensing for applicable New York customers.

"eToro is SIPC protected."

Use:

"Eligible securities held through the eToro USA Securities brokerage relationship fall within the securities-customer protection framework; eToro's crypto entities are not FINRA or SIPC members."

---

Clearing and custody for securities

eToro USA Securities is an introducing broker-dealer.

Current U.S. platform documentation identifies:

  • Clearing firm: Apex Clearing Corporation
  • Securities custody: Apex Clearing Corporation

Apex handles functions including:

  • execution;
  • clearing;
  • settlement;
  • securities custody;
  • account statements;
  • confirmations.

---

Stock and ETF pricing

Current U.S. pricing states:

  • Stocks:
  • Online commission: $0
  • Fractional shares: Yes
  • Fractional trade: $10

The U.S. homepage currently markets:

  • Platform assets: 5,000+ assets

That figure describes the broader platform lineup.

It should not be interpreted as 5,000 U.S. stocks.

eToro currently states that it pays the listed regulatory transaction fees on stock sales on the customer's behalf under the ordinary published stock-fee page.

Other third-party or requested-service charges can still apply.

"Zero commission" therefore does not mean that every possible account service has zero cost.

---

Options pricing

Current U.S. options pricing:

  • Options:
  • Brokerage commission: $0
  • Contract fee: $0
  • Starting funding: $50
  • Regulatory fees apply: Yes

eToro states that regulatory fees can include:

  • Options Regulatory Fee;
  • FINRA Trading Activity Fee;
  • SEC-related transaction fees where applicable;
  • other listed regulatory charges.

"Options are completely free."

Better:

"eToro currently charges no brokerage commission or per-contract brokerage fee for eligible U.S. options trades, while regulatory and certain processing fees can still apply."

---

Crypto pricing

Current U.S. crypto pricing is simple:

  • Crypto:
  • Buy fee: 1%
  • Sell fee: 1%

Since mid-July 2025, eToro states that the 1% fee is shown separately from the crypto spread rather than being embedded into the displayed spread calculation.

The fee applies when:

  • buying crypto;
  • selling crypto.

Example

A $2,000 crypto purchase at a 1% trading fee produces:

$2,000 × 1% = $20

in the stated buy-side trading fee.

If the position were later sold for $2,400:

$2,400 × 1% = $24

in the stated sell-side trading fee.

Total stated trading fees across those two transactions would be:

$44

before blockchain-transfer costs or other applicable services.

The sell fee changes with the value at the time of sale.

---

Crypto geographic availability

Current U.S. pricing states that crypto trading is not available in:

  • Nevada;
  • Hawaii;
  • Puerto Rico;
  • U.S. Virgin Islands.

New York is no longer on that exclusion list.

---

Securities-only accounts can exist

Current U.S. agreement language separately addresses:

  • customers in states or territories where crypto is unavailable;
  • customers who elect to open a securities-only account.

That means an eToro account should not automatically be described as a combined crypto-and-securities account.

Product availability depends on:

  • residence;
  • account setup;
  • eligibility;
  • current platform terms.

---

What the brokerage does not offer

Current Form CRS states that eToro USA Securities does not offer:

  • Mutual funds: No
  • Retirement accounts: No
  • Bonds: No
  • Proprietary investment products: No

This distinguishes eToro from full-line brokers such as Fidelity, Schwab, Firstrade, or Interactive Brokers.

The platform's breadth is concentrated in:

  • stocks;
  • ETFs;
  • options;
  • crypto through affiliates.

It is not a complete substitute for every traditional brokerage product.

---

Self-directed status

eToro USA Securities states that its brokerage service is self-directed.

  • Securities:
  • Discretionary management: No
  • Personalized securities recommendations: No
  • Suitability monitoring: No

Social tools do not change that.

Viewing another investor's activity or using a platform social feature does not mean eToro has become the investor's fiduciary portfolio manager.

---

Copy and social features require careful wording

eToro is unusual among U.S. brokerages because social information is central to the interface.

Users can:

  • follow market conversations;
  • view other users' activity;
  • see sentiment data;
  • use eligible social-investing functionality.

Potential differences include:

  • timing;
  • execution price;
  • cash availability;
  • account restrictions;
  • eligibility;
  • asset availability;
  • withdrawals or deposits made by the copied user;
  • later position changes.

A social feature is an execution mechanism, not proof that the underlying strategy is prudent.

---

Fractional-share ownership

eToro supports fractional stock investing.

Fractional shares create economic exposure to less than one whole share.

They can differ from whole shares in:

  • transferability;
  • voting treatment;
  • liquidation;
  • order handling;
  • corporate-action processing.

---

Withdrawal pricing

Current U.S. fee page states:

  • Withdrawal fee: $0
  • Published withdrawal minimum on fee page: $30

Because withdrawal minimum language can change across support pages and workflows, preserve the fee-page value as a dated current reference rather than an evergreen guarantee.

Create an update trigger for:

  • withdrawal minimum;
  • processing charges;
  • transfer mechanics.

---

SIPC and crypto distinction

SIPC does not insure:

  • stock-price declines;
  • option losses;
  • ETF losses;
  • crypto losses.

Money-transmitter or BitLicense regulation also does not insure crypto market value.

Assessment

eToro is strongest when the investor values one consumer interface for:

  • stocks;
  • ETFs;
  • options;
  • crypto;
  • social market information.

Its stock and options headline pricing is competitive.

The crypto model is not.

A 1% fee on both entry and exit creates a visible round-trip cost before considering market movement or transfer costs.

The platform also lacks traditional brokerage depth in mutual funds, bonds, and retirement accounts.

The most important protection distinction is straightforward:

eToro USA Securities is the securities broker. eToro's crypto entities are not SIPC brokers.

The most important product distinction is equally clear:

social functionality can simplify discovery and execution, but it does not remove the need to evaluate the underlying investment.
