Kraken: Platform Profile
We may earn a commission if you open an account through links on this page. Our editorial analysis is independent and is never influenced by commercial partnerships. Full disclosure.
Kraken is no longer accurately described as a crypto exchange only.
Its U.S. ecosystem now spans:
- spot crypto
- Kraken Pro
- staking and rewards
- conventional U.S. stocks and ETFs
- regulated U.S. futures
- retail margin for eligible users
- APIs and professional trading tools
The legal structure changes by product.
U.S. crypto activity is primarily associated with Payward Interactive. Conventional equities run through Kraken Securities. U.S. futures and retail spot margin use NinjaTrader Clearing doing business as Kraken Derivatives US.
The distinction is critical because crypto, securities and futures receive different regulatory protections.
May fit better for
- active crypto traders
- investors wanting crypto and stocks in one app
- traders using APIs and advanced order books
- U.S. futures traders
- investors who value on-platform staking
May fit less well for
- investors seeking a traditional retirement brokerage
- investors wanting mutual funds
- investors wanting one simple fee schedule
- investors unwilling to accept crypto custody/exchange risk
- residents of jurisdictions where specific Kraken products are unavailable
U.S. crypto entity
Current U.S. general Kraken contracting structure uses Payward Interactive, Inc.
Current regulatory identifiers include:
- FinCEN MSB: 31000270997766
- NMLS: 1843762
Payward Interactive is not a FINRA broker-dealer.
Digital assets held/traded through that business are not automatically SIPC or FDIC protected.
Kraken Pro spot pricing changed in July 2026
Current base Kraken Pro spot tier: 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
Current qualification can reflect:
- 30-day spot volume
- applicable futures volume
- assets on platform
The old 0.25% / 0.40% schedule no longer applies.
Selected current spot tiers:
| Qualification | Maker | Taker |
|---|---|---|
| Base | 0.40% | 0.80% |
| $2,500+ spot volume | 0.30% | 0.60% |
| $10,000+ spot volume / qualifying assets | 0.22% | 0.38% |
| $25,000+ spot volume / qualifying assets | 0.20% | 0.35% |
| $100,000+ spot volume / qualifying assets | 0.12% | 0.25% |
| $1M+ spot volume / qualifying assets | 0.06% | 0.18% |
Spot fee math
$100 trade
Maker: $100 × 0.40% = $0.40
Taker: $100 × 0.80% = $0.80
$1,000
Maker: $4
Taker: $8
$10,000
Maker: $40
Taker: $80
These examples apply to Kraken Pro base-tier spot pricing.
They do not represent Instant Buy pricing.
Kraken Pro vs Instant Buy
The two are not the same.
Kraken Pro uses an order book and maker/taker schedule.
Instant/simple transactions can use different disclosed pricing and spread mechanics.
A statement such as Kraken costs 0.40% is incomplete.
The cost depends on:
- interface
- order type
- fee tier
- asset
- transaction method
U.S. equities
Brokerage entity:
- Legal name: Kraken Securities LLC
- CRD: 324343
- SEC: 8-71030
- FINRA member: yes
- SIPC member: yes
Current offering: 11,000+ stocks and ETFs at $0 commission.
U.S. residents in eligible states can access conventional exchange-listed equities and ETFs through Kraken.
Orders can be entered in the app; availability remains jurisdiction-specific.
Securities protection through the broker-dealer should not be extended to the crypto side of Kraken.
xStocks are a different product
xStocks are tokenized representations of stocks and ETFs.
They are not conventional shares and do not provide ordinary shareholder rights.
Current status: xStocks are not available to U.S. clients.
They are also unavailable in several other jurisdictions.
A U.S. stock bought through Kraken Securities and a tokenized xStock are different legal instruments, and xStocks are not part of the Kraken Securities equities offering.
U.S. futures
Current U.S. futures provider: NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC d/b/a Kraken Derivatives US
- CFTC FCM: yes
- NFA member: yes
- NFA ID: 0309379
Current U.S. offering includes CME-listed contracts across categories that can include:
- crypto
- equity indexes
- FX
- commodities
- metals
- energy
Current examples include:
- Micro Bitcoin
- Micro Ether
- Micro E-mini S&P 500
- Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100
Kraken Derivatives US also supports applicable perpetual futures under the current product structure.
Futures fees
CME contract commissions vary by contract.
Current examples:
| Contract | Commission per side |
|---|---|
| MNQ | $0.39 |
| MES | $0.39 |
| NQ | $1.29 |
| ES | $1.29 |
Exchange, NFA and clearing charges apply separately.
Current Bitnomial-listed perpetual all-in example: $0.15 per contract per side.
Those examples do not apply to every contract.
Margin
Eligible U.S. retail clients can access spot margin through Kraken Derivatives US under the current structure.
Spot margin is not ordinary cash-account crypto trading.
Losses can exceed the initial collateral.
Securities-account SIPC language does not apply to futures or margin positions.
Staking
Bonded staking
Kraken uses tiered commissions based on applicable staked balance.
Current schedule includes:
| Staked balance | Commission |
|---|---|
| $0 to $1M | 25% |
| $1M to $5M | 20% |
| $5M to $50M | 10% |
| $50M to $100M | 5% |
| $100M+ | 0% |
Flexible staking / Auto Earn
Current commission: 30% of rewards for flexible staking and 30% of rewards for Auto Earn.
Staking involves:
- network risk
- protocol risk
- unbonding/liquidity restrictions
- slashing risk
- variable rewards
No advertised yield is guaranteed.
Geographic limitations
Kraken services vary by jurisdiction.
Current U.S. materials identify service restrictions, including no service for certain products/residents in specific states.
Kraken is not uniformly available throughout the United States; country and state availability remain product-specific.
Protection
Kraken Securities
SIPC applies subject to normal brokerage rules.
It does not protect investment values from falling.
Payward Interactive crypto
No SIPC. No FDIC.
Kraken Derivatives US
Futures accounts operate under CFTC/NFA rules.
Futures are not SIPC-insured securities.
Kraken assessment
Kraken's strongest advantage is the breadth of its trading infrastructure.
A U.S. user can now access both crypto and conventional securities, and eligible traders can use regulated futures without leaving the Kraken ecosystem.
The tradeoff is complexity.
The base Kraken Pro spot fee increased materially under the July 2026 schedule, and simple purchases, Pro trades, staking, stocks and futures all use different economics.
Kraken can be a strong platform for someone who will actually use the advanced tools.
It is less compelling when the user expects one simple fee and one protection regime across every asset.
