Uphold: Platform Profile

Overview
Uphold is built around cross-asset conversion rather than a conventional crypto order book.
Its U.S. platform can combine:
- cryptocurrencies;
- stablecoins;
- U.S. stocks and ETFs through a separate securities broker;
- fractional shares;
- precious metals in eligible jurisdictions;
- staking where available;
- an integrated USD Interest Account provided through a separate broker and bank-sweep program.
The ability to move between asset types in one interface is the platform's defining convenience.
The tradeoff is pricing.
Uphold's crypto pricing is generally an all-inclusive spread/fee model rather than a low headline maker/taker schedule.
May fit better for
- users who value simple cross-asset conversion;
- investors who want crypto and conventional equities in one app;
- investors who want fractional stocks with small starting amounts;
- users interested in precious metals alongside digital assets;
- investors who prefer knowing the final quoted trade price before confirming;
- eligible users who want staking or an integrated USD interest/cash-sweep product.
May fit less well for
- high-frequency crypto traders seeking low maker/taker exchange fees;
- investors who assume the quoted crypto fee is a fixed percentage in all market conditions;
- users who assume FDIC insurance on the USD Interest Account applies to crypto;
- investors who assume SIPC status of Uphold Securities applies to crypto;
- users in states where particular staking or securities features remain restricted.
---
U.S. crypto entity
Current Uphold disclosures identify:
- Crypto entity: Uphold HQ Inc.
- NMLS ID: 1269875
- FinCEN MSB: Yes
Uphold HQ is licensed as a money transmitter in numerous states.
That does not make the crypto service a securities brokerage.
---
Current U.S. crypto pricing
Uphold's service-fee schedule was updated July 1, 2026.
It describes the following typical U.S./U.K./Europe trading ranges:
- Typical trading pricing:
- Most stablecoins: <0.25%
- Major market FX: 0.3%
- BTC ETH: 2.05%–2.20%
- Altcoins: 2.85%–3.80%
- Precious metals: 2.35%–3.40%
These are not guaranteed fixed commissions.
Uphold states that pricing depends on factors including:
- user location;
- payment method;
- asset;
- trade size;
- external trading costs;
- network fees;
- liquidity;
- volatility.
The trade preview displays the final applicable amount.
---
The displayed quote is the central cost tool
Uphold uses an all-inclusive pricing model for many asset conversions.
The user should judge the transaction from the actual preview.
"Uphold charges exactly 2.05% on Bitcoin."
Better:
"Uphold's current U.S. fee schedule states that typical BTC/ETH pricing falls within a 2.05%–2.20% range, with actual pricing dependent on transaction conditions and shown before confirmation."
---
Stablecoin 1:1 parity program has a cap
Current service-fee terms state that qualifying conversions among USD and major USD-based stablecoins can receive 1:1 parity for the first:
- Stablecoin parity monthly volume: $20,000 rolling monthly
while market parity remains within the stated tolerance.
Above the cap, or if parity conditions are not met, standard pricing can apply.
---
Stock brokerage
U.S. securities are offered through:
- Securities broker: Uphold Securities Inc.
- FINRA CRD: 34071
- SEC number: 8-46202
- SEC registered broker dealer: Yes
- FINRA member: Yes
- SIPC member: Yes
- Custodian: Apex Clearing Corporation
Current securities fee schedule effective July 21, 2026 states:
- Equity trade commission: $0
- Fractional share commission: $0
Uphold Securities currently absorbs the listed SEC/FINRA regulatory transaction fees under the published schedule.
Other service fees can still apply depending on the account/service.
---
Fractional shares
Current Uphold equities materials state:
- Fractional shares: Yes
- Fractional minimum investment: $5
The shares are conventional securities, not tokenized equities.
Current product page states:
- Tokenized securities current equities product: No
---
Equity trading hours — current beta status matters
The current equities page states that during the beta launch:
- Equity trading hours:
- Standard market hours: 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. ET Monday–Friday
- 24 5 status: coming soon
---
Crypto-to-stock interface does not erase the legal conversion
Uphold markets the ability to swap digital assets into stocks and ETFs in the app.
That convenience should not be interpreted as crypto itself becoming a security.
The securities transaction is offered through Uphold Securities.
A user can experience a single workflow while the underlying legal products remain separate.
---
SIPC applies to securities brokerage, not crypto market value
Current structure:
- Uphold Securities:
- SIPC: Yes
- Uphold crypto:
- SIPC: No
- FDIC: No
SIPC does not cover:
- stock market declines;
- crypto market losses;
- metal-price losses;
- staking losses.
---
Staking
Uphold offers staking in eligible jurisdictions.
Current Flexible Staking page states:
- Flexible Staking:
- Fee: up to 50% of rewards depending on asset
- Displayed estimated APY: net of Uphold commission
Current U.S. exclusions listed on the staking page include:
- California;
- Louisiana;
- Washington State;
- American Samoa.
Availability can change.
---
Staking fee is not 50% of principal
The phrase "up to 50%" can be misread.
It refers to a fee taken from the staking rewards under the current program terms—not 50% of the customer's staked principal.
Example:
Assume gross protocol rewards before Uphold's fee equal:
$100
If the applicable service fee were 50%:
$100 × 50% = $50
The customer would retain:
$50
of that gross reward before tax considerations and asset-price effects.
The customer's principal is not being described by this fee calculation.
---
USD Interest Account is provided through Atomic Brokerage
Uphold integrates a separate USD Interest Account.
The brokerage provider is:
- USD interest provider: Atomic Brokerage LLC
- Atomic SEC registered: Yes
- Atomic FINRA member: Yes
- Atomic SIPC member: Yes
Current product page states:
- USD interest:
- Minimum to start: $1
- APY on 10 plus: 3.75%
- APY under 10: 2%
- Lockup: none stated
Interest rates can change.
---
FDIC protection begins at program banks
The USD Interest Account provides access to Atomic's cash-sweep program.
Current stated maximum:
- Potential FDIC sweep coverage: up to $2.5 million
- Program bank count: 10
- Per bank standard limit: $250,000 per depositor per insured bank per ownership capacity
The distinction matters.
Uphold states that cash is FDIC insured after it is swept to eligible program-bank deposits, subject to limits and eligibility.
Funds merely sitting at Atomic pending sweep are not automatically FDIC insured.
Crypto is not part of the Atomic cash sweep.
"Uphold accounts are FDIC insured up to $2.5 million."
Better:
"Eligible cash swept through the separately provided Atomic Brokerage program to participating banks can qualify for aggregate FDIC coverage up to the stated program limit, subject to per-bank and ownership-capacity rules."
---
Precious metals
Uphold offers precious-metal exposure in eligible jurisdictions.
Current fee schedule lists typical pricing of:
- Precious metals typical fee: 2.35%–3.40%
Current disclosures identify third-party precious-metal infrastructure.
Assessment
Uphold's value proposition is simplicity across asset classes.
A user can move among:
- crypto;
- stablecoins;
- stocks;
- metals;
- cash-related products
without assembling several independent apps.
That convenience is meaningful.
The cost structure is the tradeoff.
Typical current BTC/ETH pricing in the U.S. is 2.05%–2.20%.
Typical altcoin pricing is higher.
That is a very different model from an exchange advertising a 0.25% maker fee.
The comparison has to include:
- interface;
- execution method;
- spread;
- convenience;
- funding;
- custody;
- withdrawal;
- total transaction economics.
The protection structure also needs discipline.
Uphold Securities is not Uphold crypto.
Atomic's cash sweep is not crypto FDIC insurance.
Those two distinctions prevent the most consequential misunderstandings.
