Lightspeed: Platform Profile

Platform profileUpdated 2026-09-07

We may earn a commission if you open an account through links on this page. Our editorial analysis is independent and is never influenced by commercial partnerships. Full disclosure.

Overview

Lightspeed is built for active and professional-style traders rather than passive, occasional investors.

Its current product stack includes:

  • equities;
  • options;
  • futures;
  • futures options;
  • multiple professional trading platforms;
  • direct routing;
  • APIs;
  • advanced market data;
  • short-selling tools;
  • margin.

Pricing is volume-sensitive.

That is the central issue throughout the review.

The lowest published commission tiers are not automatic standard pricing for every account.

May fit better for

  • high-volume stock traders;
  • high-volume options traders;
  • futures traders;
  • direct-access traders;
  • users who need hotkeys and advanced order routing;
  • traders willing to pay platform/data costs for specialized tools.

May fit less well for

  • infrequent investors;
  • small accounts sensitive to monthly minimum commissions;
  • passive investors who only buy broad ETFs;
  • users who want a simple all-in-one consumer app;
  • investors who assume the advertised lowest tier applies immediately.

Current BrokerCheck identifies multiple fully disclosed clearing relationships, including:

  • Clearing relationships:
  • Interactive Brokers LLC
  • Wedbush Securities Inc.

The current protection page specifically discusses additional excess coverage for accounts carried by Wedbush.

---

Equity commissions are volume-based

Current active-trader pricing includes per-share and per-trade schedules.

Selected current published per-share tiers:

  • Equity per share selected tiers:
  • Over 15 million shares: $0.0010
  • Over 6 million: $0.0015
  • Over 3 million: $0.0020
  • Over 1 million: $0.0025
  • Over 250000: $0.0035
  • Minimum order: $0.25 where applicable

Selected per-trade tiers:

  • Equity per trade selected tiers:
  • Over 10000 trades: $2.00
  • Over 3000: $2.50
  • Over 1500: $3.00
  • Over 750: $3.50
  • Over 250: $3.99

The current page states that updated pricing applies to qualifying new accounts opened after March 1, 2024.

Existing customers may need to request a pricing change.

---

Options pricing

Current standard options pricing for under 500 monthly contracts:

  • Options:
  • Standard contract fee: $0.60
  • Standard minimum order: $1

Current active-volume tiers:

  • Options volume tiers:
  • Over 500: $0.50
  • Over 2000: $0.45
  • Over 10000: $0.35
  • Over 50000: $0.25
  • Over 100000: $0.20

Exchange, routing, and regulatory fees can be separate.

---

Promotional options pricing is not the standard

Lightspeed currently has limited-time promotion pages that can show:

  • Promotional option: $0.40 per contract

Promo eligibility, duration, code, and customer status can differ.

---

Options example

A trader executing 300 contracts in a month at the current standard tier:

300 × $0.60 = $180

before routing, exchange, or regulatory fees.

A trader exceeding the applicable volume threshold can qualify for a lower contract rate.

---

Futures

Current futures pricing:

  • Futures:
  • Commission: $1.29 per contract per side
  • Exchange clearing NFA fees additional: Yes
  • Futures options:
  • Commission: $1.79 per contract per side
  • Additional fees: Yes

Current futures account page:

  • Futures opening minimum: $10,000
  • Futures maintenance requirement: $5,000

---

Lightspeed Trader Pro current account-minimum

The current Lightspeed homepage markets:

  • Lightspeed Trader Pro US minimum: $2,500

Some older or secondary platform-comparison materials can still display higher figures.

Use the current homepage reference for the current U.S. Trader Pro entry point.

---

Monthly commission minimum for smaller accounts

Current Lightspeed disclosures state:

  • Accounts under 15000:
  • Monthly minimum commission: $25
  • Offset by: actual commissions charged in prior month

This matters for low-activity customers.

A low per-share headline does not mean an inactive small account has no monthly economic minimum.

---

Platform stack

Current platform lineup includes:

  • Lightspeed Trader Pro;
  • Lightspeed Web & Mobile;
  • Sterling Trader Pro;
  • Lightspeed Connect API;
  • EZE EMS;
  • eFutures/CQG for futures.

Selected current software disclosures show:

  • Lightspeed Trader Pro: up to $130/month
  • Lightspeed Web Mobile: $0 software fee
  • Sterling Trader Pro: $240–$270/month reference
  • Lightspeed Connect API: $200/month reference
  • EZE EMS: $375/month reference

Market-data packages can add separate costs.

Software rebates or waivers can apply based on activity.

---

Trader Pro functionality

Current Lightspeed Trader Pro capabilities include:

  • customizable hotkeys;
  • Level 2;
  • direct exchange/market-maker/algorithm routes;
  • dark-pool routing access;
  • charting;
  • scanners;
  • options tools;
  • short-locate workflows;
  • API connectivity;
  • overnight/extended-session access.

---

Margin rates

Current published table, with comparison date December 12, 2025:

  • Margin selected tiers:
  • Under 10000: 11.00%
  • 10000: 11.00%
  • 25000: 11.00%
  • 50000: 9.75%
  • 100000: 9.75%
  • 250000: 9.25%
  • Over 1000000: 8.50%

The page states margin interest applies to overnight debit balances, not same-session day trades that are opened and closed without overnight borrowing.

Rates are time-sensitive.

---

Margin example

A constant $25,000 overnight debit at 11% for one simple-year illustration:

$25,000 × 11% = $2,750

Actual interest follows the broker's daily debit and rate methodology.

Active-trading commission savings can be small relative to sustained margin borrowing.

---

2026 intraday rules

Lightspeed's current marketing reflects the elimination of the old universal $25,000 day-trading barrier.

---

SIPC and excess coverage

Standard securities protection:

  • SIPC:
  • Total limit: $500,000
  • Cash sublimit: $250,000
  • Market loss protection: No

For applicable Wedbush-carried accounts, Lightspeed's current security page describes excess protection through Lloyd's subject to policy limits.

Futures are outside SIPC.

Assessment

Lightspeed is a specialist platform.

Its economics make more sense as volume rises.

High-volume traders can move into materially lower per-share and per-contract tiers.

Low-volume users can face:

  • higher standard commissions;
  • software costs;
  • market-data charges;
  • a $25 monthly commission minimum when the account is under $15,000.

The futures product is also distinct, with its own $10,000 opening minimum and $1.29-per-side base commission.

The key rule is:

Do not evaluate Lightspeed using the lowest advertised commission alone. Volume, platform, data, account size, routing, and product all affect total cost.
