M1 Finance: Platform Profile

What M1 is in 2026
M1 is a self-directed long-term investing platform built around customizable Pies, fractional stock and ETF investing, portfolio automation, margin borrowing, high-yield cash and direct crypto. The defining characteristic is that the investor chooses the holdings and the target allocations; M1 automates the execution of that plan rather than deciding it.
That distinction is the reason M1 should not be filed as a conventional robo-advisor. A robo-advisor selects and manages a portfolio on a discretionary basis. M1's ordinary brokerage accounts are self-directed: the customer builds a Pie, sets percentage targets, and M1's automation routes contributions and rebalancing toward those targets. Automation of execution is not delegation of investment authority.
The 2026 addition that complicates the picture — without changing it — is M1 Advisor, a separate SEC-registered advisory service provided by M1 Advisory Services LLC. It is AI-powered, digital-only, currently in beta and, critically, non-discretionary. It can analyse and suggest; it cannot transact for the customer.
M1 Finance LLC was formed in Delaware in February 2015 and its current FINRA main office is 200 N LaSalle Street, Suite 810, Chicago, Illinois. Its parent is M1 Holdings Inc., a private company. Service is limited to the United States; M1 does not onboard international clients.
Material changes since older descriptions of M1
Three changes make pre-2026 descriptions of M1 unreliable.
First, pricing was restructured around a flat Platform Fee. The current standard is a $3 monthly Platform Fee or $3 monthly IRA Fee with defined waivers, not a tiered M1 Plus membership. Any description that presents M1 Plus as the current pricing structure is stale.
Second, M1 Advisor launched in beta in 2026 through a separately registered adviser, M1 Advisory Services LLC. For the first time there is a registered advisory service inside the M1 relationship — non-discretionary, AI-delivered, currently priced at 0% against an authorized maximum of 0.20%.
Third, the cash and crypto structures are now clearly documented as separate arrangements: a program-bank sweep for cash and Bakkt execution and custody for crypto, each with its own protection profile.
Who M1 fits
M1 fits the investor who already knows their target allocation and wants contributions apportioned automatically. It fits recurring investors who fund monthly and want each deposit routed toward underweight positions without manual work. It fits people who want a large number of positions — up to 100 slices in a Pie — held at precise percentages that would be tedious to maintain by hand. It fits investors above the $10,000 waiver threshold, for whom the automation carries no platform cost. It fits people who want margin borrowing, high-yield cash and direct crypto in one app rather than three. And it fits investors who want structure imposed on their own decisions rather than decisions made for them.
Who M1 fits poorly
M1 fits poorly anyone who trades intraday, because ordinary equity orders execute in scheduled windows rather than on demand. It fits poorly options traders, futures traders and forex traders, none of which M1 supports. It fits poorly investors who hold mutual funds, individual bonds or Treasuries, which M1 neither offers nor accepts on transfer. It fits poorly very small accounts below the waiver threshold, where $36 a year is a heavy percentage drag. It fits poorly investors who want a human financial advisor, since M1 Advisor is AI-delivered and non-discretionary with no human advisor access. And it fits poorly anyone who wants an HSA, a 529 plan, OTC securities or foreign-listed shares.
Regulatory and legal-entity structure
M1 deliberately separates brokerage, advisory, crypto and cash functions across entities, and the protections differ accordingly.
- Brokerage: M1 Finance LLC — SEC-registered broker-dealer, FINRA member, SIPC member, CRD 281242, SEC number 8-69670.
- Advisory: M1 Advisory Services LLC — SEC-registered investment adviser, CRD 249787, SEC number 801-106511.
- Crypto: M1 Digital LLC is the platform entity; execution and custody are provided by Bakkt Financial Solutions I, LLC.
- Cash: the brokerage entity is M1 Finance LLC; the bank sweep runs through B2 Bank National Association and participating program banks. M1 itself is not a bank.
- Parent: M1 Holdings Inc.
An investor holding stocks, cash and crypto inside the M1 app holds three different things under three different arrangements. That is the single most important structural fact in this profile.
Eligibility
Investment accounts require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, a minimum age of 18, a current U.S. residential address and a valid U.S. phone number. International clients are not supported. Crypto accounts require the same age-18 and U.S. residency conditions. Margin requires at least $2,000 in eligible account equity and is not available in retirement or custodial accounts.
Pricing: the $3 Platform Fee
M1's current standard is a $3 monthly Platform Fee, or a $3 monthly IRA Fee, with waivers. The fee is waived when total M1 assets reach $10,000 at least one day during the applicable billing cycle, and it is waived while an active M1 Personal Loan exists. A customer is never charged both the Platform Fee and the IRA Fee in the same month; the monthly maximum of those two fees is $3.
Stock trading and ETF trading carry $0 commission. Older descriptions built around an M1 Plus membership tier do not describe the current standard pricing structure and should not be treated as current.
For an investor below the waiver threshold, the flat fee is the dominant cost, and its percentage weight is severe at small balances:
| M1 assets | Annual platform fee | Effective percentage |
|---|---|---|
| $500 | $36 | 7.20% |
| $1,000 | $36 | 3.60% |
| $5,000 | $36 | 0.72% |
| $9,999 | $36 | approximately 0.36% |
| $10,000+ | $0 if waiver conditions are met | 0% |
For very small accounts, a flat $36 annual platform fee can be much more significant than the headline "commission-free" trading suggests. That table isolates the platform fee alone; it deliberately excludes ETF expense ratios, crypto fees, margin interest and regulatory fees, all of which are separate.
The practical consequence is that the $10,000 threshold materially changes M1's economics. Below it, M1 is a fee-bearing platform with a percentage cost that shrinks as the account grows. At and above it, the platform cost goes to zero and the automation is effectively free.
Investment universe and what is not supported
M1 supports approximately 6,000+ U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs, with fractional shares and a $1 minimum stock or ETF order. Crypto sits in a separate account.
Explicitly unsupported: options, futures, retail forex, mutual fund purchases, individual bonds, direct Treasury securities, OTC securities, foreign-listed stocks and prediction markets. M1's transfer documentation likewise identifies mutual funds, bonds and Treasury securities among the security types it cannot accept. An investor whose plan requires any of those needs a different or additional brokerage.
Pies, automation and trade windows
A Pie is a set of slices with target percentage allocations. A Pie can hold up to 100 slices, and each slice carries a minimum 1% target allocation. Auto-Invest is available and on by default, with a $25 minimum excess-cash trigger. Dynamic rebalancing directs new deposits toward underweight slices, moving the portfolio back toward target without selling — which can reduce unnecessary taxable sales, though M1 does not guarantee tax efficiency and drifted portfolios may still require a manual rebalance that does generate taxable sales.
Dividend reinvestment is available at both the security level and the portfolio level.
Execution is the trade-off. M1 aggregates ordinary securities orders into scheduled trade windows rather than continuous intraday order entry. The morning window runs at approximately 9:30 AM ET and the afternoon window at approximately 3:00 PM ET. Accounts under $25,000 get one window per day, with selection between morning and afternoon where eligible; accounts at $25,000 or more can access two windows per day subject to eligibility conditions. Unrestricted on-demand intraday trading of stocks and ETFs is not the design.
This makes M1 fundamentally different from Robinhood, Webull or Interactive Brokers. Those platforms are built for continuous execution. M1 is built for scheduled, allocation-driven execution. For a monthly contributor to a target allocation, that is irrelevant to outcomes. For anyone who needs to hit a specific intraday price, it is disqualifying.
Model Portfolios
M1 publishes Model Portfolios across General Investing, Retirement, Income-Focused, Responsible Investing / ESG, Stocks & Bonds and Other categories. A user cannot modify a Model Portfolio; custom Pies exist for that purpose. Model Portfolios are pre-built allocations a self-directed investor may choose to adopt — they are not managed robo portfolios, and adopting one does not create an advisory relationship. The brokerage relationship remains self-directed unless the customer separately enters an M1 Advisor relationship.
M1 Advisor
M1 Advisor is provided by M1 Advisory Services LLC, an SEC-registered investment adviser. It is currently in beta and available only to beta participants. Delivery is AI-powered and digital-only; there is no human financial advisor access.
The relationship is non-discretionary. The user retains trade control at all times. Capabilities include personal-finance questions, portfolio and account analysis, stock and ETF research, and financial strategy guidance. Stated limitations are material: it cannot transact on behalf of the customer, it does not have real-time market data, and it cannot guarantee or predict returns.
On fees, M1 Advisory's July 2026 Form CRS states the service may charge up to 0.20% annually and currently charges 0%. The authorized maximum and the current rate are different facts and should not be collapsed. The separate M1 platform fee can still apply on top of any advisory fee.
M1 Advisor is not a human advisor, not discretionary portfolio management, not a guarantee and not available to every M1 user.
Margin loans
The M1 Margin Loan is integrated into the brokerage account. It requires $2,000 minimum account equity, and the headline borrowing capacity is up to 50% of eligible portfolio value, subject to maintenance requirements. The published standard rate is 5.65% as of September 3, 2026, and it is variable. Interest accrues daily on a 360-day convention, and there is no fixed repayment schedule. Retirement and custodial accounts are ineligible.
There is a current promotion available to selected new clients that reduces the rate by 1.66 percentage points for 12 months, producing a promotional rate as low as 3.99% and ending September 30, 2026. That is a targeted promotion, not the standard customer rate.
At the standard 5.65%, using M1's 360-day convention:
| Borrowed | Approximate annual interest if the balance stayed constant |
|---|---|
| $5,000 | $282.50 |
| $10,000 | $565 |
| $25,000 | $1,412.50 |
| $50,000 | $2,825 |
Those figures are illustrations, not quotes. Actual interest accrues daily on the outstanding balance, the rate is variable and can rise, borrowing can trigger maintenance calls and forced liquidation, and interest expense is a cost that sits entirely separate from any investment losses in the collateral portfolio.
Crypto
M1 offers direct crypto in a separate crypto account with a $100 account minimum. Execution and custody are provided by Bakkt Financial Solutions I, LLC. The supported asset list is dynamic and should be read from M1's current list rather than any snapshot. Crypto Pies are available and are separate from stock and ETF Pies. Crypto trades on demand rather than in the equity trade windows, with a daily maintenance window from 5:25 to 6:10 ET and a $1 minimum order.
The cost structure requires care. M1 charges $0 commission on crypto. Bakkt currently assesses a 1% (100 basis point) transaction fee on both purchases and sales, reflected in the execution price. So the trade is commission-free from M1 but not economically free: a round trip carries roughly 2% in Bakkt transaction cost embedded in pricing. External wallet transfers carry a $150 fee under M1's current fee schedule, with support subject to current rules.
Crypto is not covered by SIPC and is not covered by FDIC insurance.
Cash
M1 High-Yield Cash is a secondary brokerage cash account with a bank sweep. The standard APY is 3.10% as of September 3, 2026, with a $100 minimum initial deposit to receive the stated APY. Withdrawals are unlimited, and individual and joint accounts are supported. M1 also ran targeted APY promotions in August and September 2026; a promotional boost offered to selected customers is not the universal standard rate.
FDIC coverage is available after funds sweep to program banks, with a headline maximum of up to $4.75 million subject to program-bank limits. Legacy High-Yield Savings Accounts remain supported for existing holders, but new savings account openings are currently paused.
The protection transition matters. Cash held at the broker-dealer before the sweep is brokerage-held cash subject to applicable SIPC rules. Once swept to program banks, it is a bank deposit eligible for FDIC insurance and no longer SIPC-covered. A blanket claim that all cash at M1 is always FDIC insured is wrong, and customers who hold balances at the same program banks elsewhere must monitor aggregate limits themselves. M1 is not a bank.
Accounts
Brokerage: individual and joint accounts at a $100 minimum, trust accounts at $5,000, custodial accounts at $100. Retirement: Traditional, Roth and SEP IRAs at $500 each, plus 401(k)-to-IRA rollovers. Cash: individual and joint High-Yield Cash. Crypto: a separate account at $100. HSAs and 529 plans are not supported.
Protection summary
Brokerage assets sit with M1 Finance LLC, a SIPC member; SIPC does not protect against market losses. Depending on account history, some accounts may be cleared through Apex and others self-cleared by M1, and the customer statement is the authoritative record of which applies. Brokerage-held cash is subject to applicable SIPC rules; program-bank cash is FDIC-eligible up to the stated network limit and is not SIPC-covered. Crypto custodied at Bakkt carries neither SIPC nor FDIC protection.
Alternatives and pre-IPO
M1 does not offer private real estate, private credit, collectibles or direct private-market investing, and it does not offer direct private company shares or a private-share marketplace.
Practical assessment
M1's distinctive strength is the intersection of customization and automation. Pies are genuinely useful for an investor who knows the allocation they want but does not want to manually apportion every contribution across a dozen positions. Dynamic rebalancing with new deposits is an elegant way to hold a target without constant selling.
The costs and constraints are equally concrete. The flat $3 monthly platform fee is inconsequential above the $10,000 waiver threshold and expensive on a percentage basis below it. Scheduled trade windows make M1 poorly suited to anyone who needs precise intraday execution. The absence of mutual funds, options, individual bonds, Treasuries, futures and retail forex narrows the platform to a U.S. stock-and-ETF core plus crypto. Margin is integrated and competitively priced at the standard 5.65%, but leverage creates liquidation risk and amplifies losses. Crypto is real direct crypto, yet Bakkt's 1% charge means "commission-free" is not the same as zero-cost. High-Yield Cash has a useful sweep structure, but the protection changes as money moves and M1 is not a bank. M1 Advisor is a meaningful 2026 addition and is worth watching, but it is beta, AI-powered and non-discretionary — not conventional managed investing.
Filed accurately, M1 is an automated self-directed brokerage. That is the frame under which its trade-offs make sense, and it is why this profile carries Online Brokerages as the primary category and Portfolio & Investment Tools as the secondary category rather than Robo-Advisors.
